What is the best way to keep up with dog food recalls to protect my dog?

Wow please don’t do what others are suggesting and just jump into homemade foods. So many dogs are getting sicker from homemade foods than they would from brands that have had recalls because people don’t fully educate themselves about how to do so properly, they cheap out on ingredients, and they don’t consult a nutrition specialist vet-most vets are NOT nutritionists and only have a basic knowledge of what’s good and what’s not, and cannot help you build a diet from scratch. The best thing to do is just do your research. In many recent recalls, it is simply a bad batch that may or may not have salmonella, and only affects a small percentage of bags that are on the shelf. My dogs food has never been recalled. I think the brand has had a recall once in the last 6 years or so since I started purchasing it, but it wasn’t on the formulas I use.So what should you look for in a dog food? Since your concern in this question is about recalls and you’re not asking for which brand is best and why, you should look into every brand, every company you can, and research their methods. How many recalls do they have a year? Or in 5 years? Or 10? If there’s an increase in recalls, why? If there’s a decrease in recalls, that means they are changing how they make the food or where they source their ingredients to try to keep the food safe. If a company has recalls, is it on a specific ingredient or formula? For instance, do they only have recalls on their chicken based formulas but have no issues with their beef, lamb, salmon, turkey, duck, etc formulas? Where do they source their food? How many warehouses do the ingredients go through before getting bagged? Does the company have a history of lawsuits as well? Even if there hasn’t been many recalls on their food, but they’ve had lawsuits against them for false advertisement (looking at you blue buffalo) that they handle poorly or don’t make any changes or try to assure the public and their customers, that’s not a trustworthy company, even if their food is the absolute best in the market (but blue buffalo isn’t and I recommend staying far away from them).Once you’ve done your research and picked the brand you like, I recommend purchasing a bag from places like Petco or petsmart with the rewards card programs. I used to buy my food at Petco because it was the only place locally that sold it, now petsmart carries it as well, and I’ve moved to a place that has smaller local pet stores and small chains that sell it as well, but because I purchased from Petco on my rewards account, I would get an email if there’s ever a recall on a product I bought. I’ve purchased a few different brands and different formulas of my favorite brands from Petco because I have a dog with severe food allergies and I was playing the “which ingredient is the problem” game with the various foods. (If you’re interested, I’ve had to settle with Merrick Limited Ingredient Diet Lamb formula. He can also eat duck and turkey but he refuses them until he’s absolutely starving, so I don’t think he likes the smell or the taste, but they don’t cause symptoms like other proteins do. I’ve only found the LID lamb in one other brand, which is $20 more expensive, so I only tried it once when my Petco stopped carrying it and had the bags on super clearance for like $15.) With all the different varieties I’ve tried, I’ve never had a recall notice about a food I was feeding my dogs.Often the recalls come from brands that mass produce for grocery stores, and they often have to source their ingredients from questionable places to keep up with the stores. Remember-as the price goes down, so does the quality. Anything that you can find in a grocery store is mass produced and such low quality it’s basically like feeding your dog ground up steak bones that might have a little bit of meat left on them, if you’re lucky. So that rules out brands like Ol Roy, Iams, Purina, even Blue Buffalo has started stocking grocery stores. Skip those foods. Avoid like the plague. Go to a pet store. Doesn’t have to be a national chain like Petco and petsmart if you don’t agree with some of their business practices or just dislike chains in general. But find a local pet store that stocks something other than grocery store brands and find a brand you trust and a formula you like. Once you find a brand, you can also check if their website has a recall alert list you can sign up for.For up to date dog food reviews and recalls, check out Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor They have done a ton of research so you don’t have to. They are not vets, but their reviews are unbiased and they will point out ingredients that are considered controversial right now because they may provide necessary vitamins and minerals but also cause things like tear stains (beet pulp). They may not have a full breakdown of each individual formula a company carries, but they try to have at least a breakdown of a grain formula and a grain free formula. And if they have breakdowns of multiple formulas but not the specific one you were interested in, you can look at the other breakdowns for that brand and see what ingredients they tend to use. They also have a section for recalls and have all the information for food and treat recalls right there on the homepage so you don’t have to go hunting for it.TL;DR find a company you trust and get on a recall alert list-pet stores have as part of the rewards program if you’ve given them a valid email, and some companies you can sign up through their website, and check out dogfoodadvisor for other info or recalls.Disclaimer: I am not a vet, nor am I a licensed pet nutritionist. My pet food research began when I started working at a pet store and wanted to have at least a little knowledge about what I was talking about when customers had these same questions about nutrition and recall. My research has been independent of any company I worked for and from my own personal experience with a food sensitive dog. My opinions are my own, and I am not specifically promoting any company as the best store to buy from or brand to buy.
