A prime example is Cato the Younger, a Roman Stoic and bitter political enemy of Julius Caesar. Cato’s enemies were not above using a little voter intimidation during elections. As Cato’s party walked to the polls to vote, a group of armed thugs jumped out of an alley, slashed at them with knives, and ran away. Cato’s friends—and even his younger brother—chickened out and fled to their homes. Cato, despite being wounded and bleeding, walked to the polls—alone, and unarmed—and voted.Self-mastery. The Stoics believed that the most powerful human being on the planet was the one who had complete control—not over an empire, or a harem, or a trade route, but his own mind. A man who could master his desires, his fears, and all the other emotions which threatened to overwhelm his reason was mightier than the wealthiest and strongest emperor.Calm. Above all, a Stoic remains emotionally stable. When confronted with good fortune, he does not jump about and yell and scream and laugh and rub it in his friends’ faces—he realizes that fortune is a fickle mistress and today’s good luck will be tomorrow’s ill luck. Likewise, when confronted with adversity, a Stoic remains calm and does not rail or swear against his fate. The word “stoic” today has been bastardized to mean a person who remains emotionless at all times, and this undoubtedly stems partly from the Stoic practice of remaining level-headed and rational both in sunshine and in shadow.Preparedness. The foremost aim of a Stoic should be to prepare himself or herself for adversity. For this reason, many Stoics, even though they were wealthy, lived as though they were not. The aforementioned Cato the Younger was the laughingstock of Rome—though an aristocrat, he went barefoot in the cold and bareheaded in the rain, and wore simple, old clothes that had been fashionable in the days of Romulus and Remus. Other Stoics slept on rock-hard mattresses, ate bread and water, and walked everywhere instead of riding horses. This was so that, if they had a sudden reversal of fortune and they lost all their wealth and luxuries, they could bear the inconvenience without batting an eyelid.“Amor fati.” This phrase, popularized by Friedrich Nietzsche, means “love of fate.” The Stoics strove to not only tolerate misfortune, but to welcome it. As Marcus Aurelius once wrote, “Misfortune nobly borne is good fortune.” When bad times befall Stoics, they remind themselves that this is an opportunity to test themselves and their philosophy against adversity and to emerge as better people.These are just a few of the traits the Stoics espoused.
