Since the Greeks, actors in western culture have been looked down upon for several reasons. For Plato, theatre and acting was bad for society because it was ‘false’ and could corrupt the youth. Theatre has always been considered to be political as it offers questions and sometimes postulates answers to the problems of society. It is therefore not helpful to those in power. Tyrants frequently close down theatres and take over TV and film to get rid of potential criticism. Also, actors have always been itinerant, not often member of a fixed community, and so were considered strangers. Christianity has considered actors to be sinful liars because they violate certain biblical pronouncements against wearing the clothes of others and pretending to be someone else. There are many more reasons I am sure but from my perspective, the theatre threaten the absolute power of both church and state by offering conflicting opinions about right and wrong.

A woman has testified under oath that she was sexually assaulted by a guy that you’re proposing should be on the most powerful legal body in the country. Two other women have also come forward and made other accusations.To my mind that means everything stops right there and things get investigated. That shouldn’t be up for debate and doesn’t need to be discussed. If she’s telling the truth then every aspect of her claim needs to be examined in detail and in full. If she’s not telling the truth, or she’s mistaken about the identity of her attacker, then he needs to serve without a cloud hanging over his head. A serious accusation has been made by a credible accuser, so you stop everything and let the FBI sort the situation out to the best of their abilities and make every effort to separate the fact from the fiction.The other thing I don’t understand is how you could surrender something as important as choosing a Supreme Court Justice to something that is essentially political theatre. The hearings aren’t really about Kavanaugh, they’re about politics. Cruz is trying to shore up votes, Graham is trying to get Trump to notice him and several of the Democrats are trying to position themselves as viable 2020 contenders. Everyone has their own agenda and is playing for the cameras. It’s sickening to watch.The hearings have also brought out a fairly ugly side of American gender politics which is frankly disturbing to see. Quora is full of people claiming that youthful hijinks shouldn’t affect a man later in life and that boys will be boys and after-all who hasn’t tried to rape a girl once you’ve had a few beers and it wasn’t really rape anyway it was just a bit of groping and not such a big deal. I don’t have words to describe what a truly revolting attitude that is. I’m not saying that point of view doesn’t exist in my own country but it seems like America’s ingrained “frat boy culture” that excuses, and sometimes even glorifies, deplorable behaviour is a genuinely repulsive part of US culture that it should be ashamed of.Oh and the evangelical Christians who say they would want Kavanaugh on the Supreme court even if the accusations are all true? Jesus thinks you’re a jerk.

Some years back, I was playing flute with a national Christian youth orchestra. We were recording an album in a small theatre in Nottingham. Things weren’t going terribly well. Tempers were getting a bit frayed, as they so often do in pressured recording situations. While everyone was being as professional as possible, I was finding it really difficult to get on with one person - A, a clarinettist - in particular. We just couldn’t see eye to eye.We came to a strings-only track, and the woodwind and brass players were released to pick up a quick (and late) lunch. We hadn’t got far before we got a call saying that their track was going to take some time, and that we wouldn’t be required for three hours or so. As I said, things were not going well.Trying to cheer ourselves up, we found an all-you-can-eat Chinese restaurant in the centre of Nottingham. This place was amazing; it served any kind of Chinese food you could imagine, as well as food from all sorts of other places.To cut a long story short, most of the section was groaning in over-full contentment after a couple of large platefuls. A and I left them for dead and kept going back, just the two of us. Somewhere around helpings four and five, and in the conversations surrounding our eating, we warmed to each other. She wanted the best from the music and was frustrated that we weren’t getting it, and so did I.If I’m being really honest, I can’t say that five plates of Chinese (etc.) food, followed by dessert, improved our woodwind playing for the rest of the day. It did however turn our relationship on its head, and for years afterwards we each knew we had a strong ally in the section.
