Why is student politics so prominent in West Bengal?

Thanks for the A2A.I want to begin this answer with one of my favorite slogans from student life:"When politics decides your future, decide what your politics should be."Firstly, I want to point out the importance of student politics in general.Politics play a very important role in the lives of a student no matter how much we may think we are immune from politics. Government decisions on education decide what we learn and whether we have access to learning at all.For example, couple of years ago when some of the European countries decided to reduce public spending on education the college or university fees increased dramatically. This was a move which had a direct impact on students and hundreds of thousands of students came out on the streets to protest. Just imagine what would happen in India if the government decides that all the public universities will have to generate their own resources and the government will not spend any money. The fees of all the universities will rise dramatically, by as much as 1000%. It will become very difficult for most students to pay their fees. This is an extreme example and such a move will probably see massive protests by students as their careers will be in jeopardy. But even though such a thing is unlikely to happen, there can be more plausible examples such as the government deciding to reduce spending on education which can lead to closure of important laboratories or a fall in the quantity and quality of teachers and instructors. The government may also decide to alter the curriculum or the syllabus without consulting the students. Now there is no reason to think that the government does these things for the welfare of the students, generally it is the opposite. Students are the last thing on the government's mind. They may do it due to political compulsions, due to financial constraints or due to other interests. In the 1970's there was huge student movements in West Germany and France against the change in curriculum in colleges. The colleges had decided to make their curriculum more "industry friendly". The students felt that the new curriculum will only serve in making loyal servants for big corporations and will not add any values to the students. The students protested in massive numbers and the Government was forced to withdraw those changes. So, protests do work.So far I have talked about how politics affect lives of students. But students also play a very important role in politics.Students represent a unique community. Why do I say this? It is because all students share something, their identity as students. For students, other identities like caste, religion or language becomes secondary, they can identify with each other beyond these barriers. This makes it easier to unite them for a cause as compared to the general population.Students are also "classless". As most of the students don't participate in production there is lesser class division among them. There is no business owner and workers among the students, everyone is homogeneous. A son of a millionaire may share the same classroom and often the same hostel room with the son of a motor mechanic. There is another thing unique to students, they are all young. As a result they are much more rebellious than the general population and are the harbinger of new ideas and thoughts. Students are not afraid to walk an untraveled path or go into uncharted territories. All these factor make the students the first and foremost to respond whenever there is any injustice. This is true the world over. The students were the first to call for the end of Vietnam War in the US. Hundreds of Berkeley students occupied their campus to demand a withdrawal of forces from Vietnam and from there it spread to other campuses across the US. Similarly in the 1960's France and Germany, it was the students who protested authoritarian decisions of the Governments and brought down decades of conservative rule in those two countries. In the 1970's students occupied the universities in France and Germany and after throwing out the administration, they started to govern the universities themselves. These were called Free Universities and several of them are still run by students. In France, the student movement of 1969 gave a call for revolution and asked the worker unions to join them. However, it failed because the workers were not ready for it and they did not respond to the call. But the movement had a long term impact on French society and politics. The protest against the Theocracy in Iran or the protests in Egypt or Tunisia were also powered by massive student participation. Even in India, the recent movements against corruption or the Delhi rape case were powered by students. However, even though students are easy to organize they seldom organize into revolutionary movements by themselves. Sometimes they do it sporadically, but mostly they need a political force to organize them. That is what the role of student organization is, that is to inform and make students politically aware about what is going on in the broader society.Contrary to what many believe, India has had a history of student movements. Bengal was always at the epicenter of it.The independence movement saw large participation of students. Subhas Chandra Bose was a student when he first protested against the treatment of Indian students in the Presidency College by the British administration. The Swadeshi Movement was largely carried forward by students. If you have seen the movie Chittagong you will know that the Chittagong uprising was done by young students under the leadership of Surya Sen. Benoy Badal and Dinesh, three revolutionary martyrs who shot dead the Director General of Police (Prison) inside the Writer's Building which was then the seat of British administration, were also students. They were members of the revolutionary Bengal Volunteers started by Subhas Chandra Bose. This is the statue of Binoy, Badal and Dineshin front of the same Writer's Building where theyexploded a bomb and killed a top Police officer. The finger is pointed towards the Writer's.But the participation of students in Bengal were not only limited to the violent Swadeshi Movement. Thousands joined Gandhiji's Satyagraha Movement as well. Chittaranjan Das played a very important role in mobilizing thousands of school and college students in the Satyagraha movement with his famous slogan "Exams can wait but Freedom cannot". The British had to convert a huge warehouse on the banks of Ganges in Howrah into a prison to accommodate the unprecedented number of political prisoners, most of whom were students. They also released most of the criminals in Presidency Jail in Calcutta to make room for the political prisoners. However, the history of student movements in Bengal goes back even further. In the 1830's a movement called Young Bengal started in Presidency College (Then Hindu College) and quickly spread to other colleges in the state. It was a movement against religious bigotry and other social evils and was founded by the poet Derozio. The movement was instrumental in popularising scientific reasoning and concepts like Liberty, Equality and Freedom among the educated Bengali class .This was the background of student movement in Bengal. Before going further, I want to restate what has been said by many others many times before that is students everywhere are essentially anti-establishment. They are always ready to protest against established norms or laws which are unfair but are accepted by the society at large. So student politics is more about ideology than anything else. Even though the day to day activities of most of the student unions or student leaders may give the impression that it is more about money and popularity, it is only real issues which can mobilize large number of students. After independence the Congress had lost its ideological basis as it was formed with the objective of gaining political freedom which had already been achieved. This was also true for most of the Swadeshi organizations as well. This resulted in a vacuum in the ideological space and the Left moved in to utilize it. They mobilized students in large numbers under the banner of its student organization which was the Student's Federation to join the peasants who were protesting against rising food prices during the Food Movement. During the protests two innocent students, Nurul Islam and Ananda Hait were shot dead by Police and this had a long term impact on the student movement in Bengal. This was the first time after Independence that a student had been shot dead by Police. Thousands of students rose up in protests and the Leftist student organization established itself as the primary anti-establishment force among the students, its popularity grew rapidly. The next turning point in the student movement came during the Naxal movement. When several peasants were shot dead by the Police in Naxalbari under a Leftist government the students again felt dis-enchanted, this time by the Leftist parties. They felt that the Left parties had betrayed the people and joined the Naxalite CPIML. The CPIML was a radical force and it preached an armed revolution against the government which attracted the students as it appealed to the fervor of youth. Thousands of students left their colleges to travel into the villages across Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh. They took up guns and indulged in acts of sporadic violence against the police and landlords. Hundreds were killed by the Police and over 50,000 were arrested. Within a decade the students realized that the strategy will not work and they slowly started to come to terms with the reality and returned to the mainstream. In most colleges and universities the most popular student organizations are those which either belong to the Left parties or the Naxalite parties. In some colleges the Trinamool have recently established student organizations but most of it's clout is through force and violence. Even the Left student organizations had become corrupt and undemocratic in the last couple of decades. There were no real student movements and as a result the role which student organizations were supposed to play had been lost. Student unions became seats of power from which one could earn money or use it as a stepping stone for further political careers. There were some exceptions of course where student politics was clean and the students organizations mobilized students on real issues. But in most of the colleges the situation was dismal. As a result, students started to avoid politics. After the TMC won the elections the clout of the leftist student organizations declined. As a result the malpractices that had crept in declined and the leftist student organizations are showing signs of reformation. Students who are not happy with some of the undemocratic moves of the present government are joining left organizations to get a platform from which they can protest. However, there is still a long way to go.

What are the best student organizations to join at Cal Poly Pomona? Why should students join them?

When I was a student I lived on campus. It was the best thing to do because you form a family atmosphere with the floor you live with. Your campus resources are there and there is ample advice on which professor to take and study groups form. I also worked on campus as an orientation leader so I got involved with a lot of different clubs on campus because you needed to know about them if parents or new students asked. After my years with orientation I worked with the Office of Student Life. It was great being so involved. They also have ethnic cultural centers around the “pancakes” (they may have moved since I was last there being that it was the 90's when I was a student.
