The ones worth taking seriously will have an electronic poster outside showing all the currencies they trade along with the bid and ask (that is, the rate at which they will buy a currency and at which they will sell a currency).So for instance, if the “true” exchange (today, Saturday Apr 11, 2020) is $100 USD equals $71.64 Cdn $’s, then a shop’s sign may say BUY USD .6850: SELL USD .7550.This means that if you want to buy $100 USD using Canadian dollars, then they are SELLING you USD, and as you can see, you will have to give them $75.50 Cdn to get $100 USD, and they make a profit of $4.00 Cdn over the true price (spot) of $71.64.Or, if you want to BUY Cdn $’s by selling the house $100 USD, then they are BUYING USD and as you can see, if you give them $100 USD, they will give you $68.50 Cdn and therein make a profit for themselves of $3.00 USD, which is more or less the exact same as $4 CDN.The difference between the Exchange House’s BUY and SELL prices is called the “spread”. When in a foreign country, be cognizant of the spread wherever you go, keeping tabs on all the exchange houses. When you are ready to exchange, go to the one with the tightest spread. Simple.Two rules:The tightest spread is NEVER, EVER the banks. EVER!!!!!2. The tightest spread is NEVER, EVER EVVVEEEERRRR in the USA. Always change money at forrex houses like I describe outside the States, at least in Canada and Europe and Israel. They are ALWAYS your best bets.Lastly, in a non-western country, if your forex webpage doesn’t give you an exchange for a currency, go to the “offical place to exchange and exchange a small amount so you don’t look “fishy”. Then go to your nearest community square and start asking the taxi drivers or people like that. By the third or fourth one, you’ll have the “right” black market price. THEN you can start exchanging, small the first time. A little larger the next time or two. These become usually your safest place.Oh, one other rule. Throw out these rules in a place like China. The spread is the spread and every place you go to exchange is owned by the government. So do NOT play games. Just do what the government wants you to do. They’re smarter than you and you cannot outsmart them, and it’s not even worth trying for that teensy little but you could save, so DON’T EVEN BOTHER. Ok?ENJOY TRAVELLING!!!
