Obviously Yes ! , Its a Grave mistake by Indian Govt. to have Gifted Katchatheevu Island to Sri Lanka !History of Katchatheevu :Katchatheevu is a 285-acre (1.15 km Sq.) island which is 17 kms away from Rameswaram, a town in the southern district of Ramanathapuram in Tamil Nadu. 20 kms away from Sri Lanka.There are historical documents dating all the way back to 1609 that the island belonged to The Sethupathis, a royal family who ruled over the Ramnad Kingdom of Tamil Nadu . Two centuries later, the British officials leased Katchatheevu and maintained it.Sri Lanka claimed it mainly because of its strategic location; and this issue was discussed many a times before 1974. It has a Catholic shrine and has been declared as a sacred area by the government of Sri Lanka. The shrine attracts devotees from both the countries.Why was Katchatheevu Gifted to Sri Lanka ?After the 1974 nuclear tests, India was under enormous international pressure and there was a need to garner support from neighbors. Sri Lanka was to host the NAM summit in 1976 and it was likely that president of UNGA may be from Sri Lanka. Thus, Indira Gandhi quickly signed an agreement with Sri Lanka and ceded the territory without any discussion with Indian people or parliament mainly to garner support from Sri Lanka.So Karunanidhi, the then chief minister of Tamil Nadu, a.k.a the savior and redeemer of Tamil people and the guardian angel of Tamil language, should have vehemently protested against this even at the risk of his own job right? Nope. He didn’t utter a single word about this for 2 whole months. The reason was, M.G.R, his political rival at that time, had filed a complaint to Indira Gandhi against the rampant corruption in Karunanidhi’s government and he simply feared that speaking out on the Katchatheevu issue might garner him more notoriety and might also result in an investigation commission by the Centre. Way to be the “leader of the Inane Dravidian race”. (He seems like a calculative risk-taker; his first major protest was lying down on a railway track, but I’m sure he did it after he was assured that third rails were not used there. He did a record breaking 3 hrs fasting Drama after Breakfast to stop Lankan Civil War (2009) and claimed to have stopped it before Lunch! That’s quickest unbeatable fasting record ever!)Hence, for the past 45 years, retrieving Katchatheevu has become a part of virtually every state party’s ideology (that is, if they have one) and election manifestos. Jayalalithaa has promised from the 1991 elections till the 2016 elections that she will get Katchatheevu back, and nothing happened. Her death itself finally became a mystery that is yet to be solved! , In fact, for some reason, she wrote to Vajpayee in 2003 that the sovereignty of Sri Lanka will be maintained in the island (Wonder!, Does a country or a King have any sovereignty ? , How do uninhabited & Controversially gifted island will have a Sovereignty ?). Karunanidhi, perhaps because of the guilt of his 2-month silence in 1974, has been perpetually rambling on about the retrieval of Katchatheevu ever since during the time of elections apart from orchestrating Caste based Riots.It is pretty clear that whichever party is ruling at the Centre, they are bound to shy away from this issue thinking that this is not India’s business. When the government is resolute about the borders of Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh, it lost an entire island to another country. Katchatheevu is also the major reason why the fishermen from Tamil Nadu get arrested almost every day by the Sri Lankan government. If the government is pondering on starting somewhere in this issue, it should realize that the ones being affected are Indian fishermen and not just “Tamil fishermen”. India should also realize how favorable Katchatheevu might be to Sri Lanka as it continues to strengthen its ties with China. DMK and AIADMK should stop blaming each other and must work together to make the Centre understand the seriousness of this issue. DMK members these days (even in Quora) started to take Pro-Sinhalese stand on Katchatheevu , esp. after their Tihar Leaders received Gifts from Rajapaksa.Problems created by this transfer :This 1974 agreement had secured the rights of Indian fishermen only to dry their nets and use Church for religious observance. But then in 1976, delimitation of International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) was agreed upon as required by the UNCLOS. With this, Indian fishermen do not have any right to even engage in drying of nets and use of Church because 1976 agreement superseded 1974 agreement.Why Cessation of Katchatheevu claimed illegal in india ?The Government of India maintains in courts that the settlement of the island was legal and final, though it was not ratified by Indian Parliament. It literally lied to the court saying "No territory belonging to India was ceded nor sovereignty relinquished since the area was in dispute and had never been demarcated" , Katchatheevu was never a disputed territory , it clearly belong to Ramnad Kingdom of Sethupathis and later on it belong to Madras Presidency under British.In the Berubari Union case (1960), the Supreme Court had already ruled that cessation of Indian territory to other country had to be ratified by the parliament via a constitution amendment act. Thus, this cessation was unconstitutional and illegal because constitutional process was not followedWhat is Sri Lanka’s stand?Over the years, Sri Lanka has dominated the scenario of making its own claims on the islands denying the rights over the island to Indian fisherman. It claims that Indian court cannot nullify the 1974 agreement.Sri Lankans also claim that they gave an island called “Wedgebank” to India in exchange. The politicos in Sri Lanka also make insensitive statements that it is easier to shoot Indian fishermen than to arrest them!, there are some Delhi based Anti-Tamil Porukkis who advise Lanka to capture boats of Tamil Fishermen and fine them heavily for crossing the Historic & Traditional waters, which Tamils used to fish in the past for centuries, even before countries like India and Sri Lanka was formed.Sri Lanka known for its Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU):The European Union (EU) has lifted its 15-month-long ban on Sri Lanka’s fisheries exports recently in 2016. The country was issued with a yellow card in 2012 and been listed by the Council in February 2015 for Illegal , Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.Pitting Indian Tamil Fishermen against Eelam Tamils is a nefarious Design followed by Sinhalese Govt supported by Indian Intelligence, whose aim is to break unity between the ethnic groups living in both the countries , and to divert the real issue of contention ie) Katchatheevu , and to stop the extension of moral support by indian Tamils for the isolated Eelam Tamils on Genocide and on Establishing their rights, It is just Politics and nothing else !, no Eco Systems involved, or Tamil vs Tamil , or a matter of Tamils not always Right or wrong as floated by some members of Pro-Sinhalese Dravidian parties !People who suddenly have fallen for Eco System are the ones who advocated Sethu Samudram Project before and had eaten away money on dredging (where did your Eco system went then ?) that was completely stopped in 2009, when last dredger was pulled out !What is the way forward?The controversies from Indian Tamils are genuine, however a discussion based solution with clarification of thought and consensus have to be adopted to devoid off any more issues in future.Illegal ceding of Katchatheevu must be Retrieved back at any cost and annexed once again with Tamil Nadu!<<Image Source : Google Image>>

In February 2016, Hackers targeted the accounts in the New York branch of the Federal reserve. The accounts belonged to the central bank of Bangladesh. The hackers gained access to the banks credentials for money transfers and begun to send 3 dozen requests totaling almost $900 million. Here’s where the typos come into play. initially the hackers were successful in transferring over $100 million to accounts in Sri Lanka ($20 million) and the Philippines ($81 million).One of the bank officials noted that the transfer volume was too large for a country like Sri Lanka and immediately notified Deutsche Bank which was the the primary routing bank. Heres the kicker. Deutsche Bank noticed the money was headed for ‘Shalika Foundation’’ a plc company. But one of the hacker misspelled Foundation and wrote ‘fundation’. Deutsche Bank immediately halted all further transaction ($800 million) and notified the Bank of Bangladesh. A single typo cost hackers the largest bank robbery in history. When two countries typically are involved in lending money to each other, the central bank of each country is usually involved.If that is the case, each central bank would assign a correspondent bank to work, which can work with each other. Sometimes in both the countries, it is the same bank. Sometimes it is not.Example: Lets say UK decides to loan GBP 150 Million to Sri Lanka. In this case Bank of England's designated bank for the transfer is Barclays Bank. However, for the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the designated bank is Deutsche Bank. Because Deutsche Bank London and Barclays Bank London can exchange funds with each other, the loan amount is electronically pushed from Barclays Bank London to Deutsche Bank London to Deutsche Bank Sri Lanka and into the designated account or accounts as mandated by the Central Bank in Sri Lanka.If however both Bank of England and Central Bank of Sri Lanka decided to use Deutsche Bank as the designated bank, then the movement of money is even more simpler.If the loan requires physical shipment of cash, for the GBP lets say 10 Million has to be in currency notes, then the BoE arranges for cash movement via one of its designated banks for the secure transport of GBP Notes from London to Sri Lanka.
