In 1997, a woman was murdered relentlessly in London. The most circumstantial evidence was a biological material under her fingernails. The victim must have scratched the perpetrator in her struggle to escape, perhaps?The sample was analyzed and matched against the National DNA database. They got a hit! The problem was that the alleged hit or perpetrator had been murdered herself, a full three weeks before this murder!The murders had occurred in different parts of the city. There was no connection between the two women. They had lived separate lives, not related, never interacted. With this established, the only possible explanation was maybe a mix-up or contamination at the forensic laboratory.Forensic scientist Dr Mike Silverman, who was the national account manager for the Forensic Science Service at the time, was baffled. His first instinct was whether mislabeled or misplaced the fingernails was the issue. It turns out that the victim had a peculiar leopard-skin patterned nail paint, which was also present in those samples.With that out of the way, he checked the lab records to see if the two samples could've somehow been mixed. The possibility was slim due to the ample time between the two cases and different forensic officers analyzing the two samples. Resolute, in his attempt to figure out this baffling mystery, Dr Silverman decided to delve deeper into how the nails themselves were collected.He found that they performed the autopsies at the same mortuary, despite the bodies arriving a few weeks apart. He decided to visit the morgue and look at their records.That's where he found the answer! The body of the victim had been kept in the freezer while the police were investigating the case. The body was taken out for nail clippings a day before the murder of the second victim. The same scissors were used to obtain both the clippings and just a day apart! Although the scissors had been cleaned between the uses, the small amount of genetic matter left on them was enough to show up on tests!The technology was improving with such a rapid pace that unanticipated errors started to occur. Dr Silverman sent the scissors from the morgue for analysis, and sure enough, multiple DNA samples were found on them, despite proper cleaning protocols at the time being followed. Dr Silverman immediately informed all the coroners, forensic scientists and the mortuaries across the country to use disposable scissors to collect evidence every time. This system is followed to this day.DNA is often considered the ultimate evidence and proof against crimes, but the tests being so accurate and delicate, it's easily contaminated. Today, everyone entering the crime scene, mortuary or the forensic labs has to wear protective gear to ensure that the samples remain unadulterated.
