What are the best pieces of longform journalism ever written?

This could become a very long list, and what do you mean by "longform"? only 8,000-12,000 magazine pieces or would you include mega-longform like Robert Caro's Power Broker (1,344 pages)? So many suggestions for magazine pieces (and I would encourage everyone to visit ASME's database of past winners of National Magazine Awards, the industry's equivalent to the Oscars). http://www.magazine.org/asme/magazine_awards/searchable_database/index.aspxI'd start things off with my personal faves (I'll add more later).Gay Talese's "Frank Sinatra Has A Cold," a nuanced profile of the singer done without the subject's coooperation. (April 1966, Esquire)http://www.esquire.com/features/ESQ1003-OCT_SINATRA_rev_Ron Rosenbaum's phone phreaker epic, Secrets of The Little Blue Box. It's a marvel of tech journalism. (Oct 1971, Esquire)http://www.lospadres.info/thorg/lbb.htmlDavid Foster Wallace's memoir, Tennis, Trigonometry, Tornados: A Midwestern Boyhood. (Dec 1992, Harpers)PDF linked to from here: http://www.harpers.org/archive/2008/09/hbc-90003557John McPhee's Encounters With The Archdruid, a book-length take on the life and battles of environmentalist David Brower.Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief, which started as a New Yorker piece, then a book then a movie.http://www.amazon.com/Orchid-Thief-Obsession-Ballantine-Readers/dp/044900371X

What is on your non fiction reading list and why?

Great question. My to-read pile is usually many dozens of volumes of Japanese manga for review and a bunch of other stuff juggled during different times of day.Right now I’m reading Segawa Noboru’s Catcher in the Rhyme, Umihara Ume’s Rokuichi+Gurashi, Yoshimurakana’s MURCIÉLAGO (Vol. 10 in Japanese, Vol. 5 in English.)I’ve been reading some fiction in English again for the first time in many years. It’s been a process of catching up on amazing writers like Ann Leckie, Nnedi Okorafor and Ada Palmer. Right now I’m working on Tanbi no Washira by Mori Natsuko in Japanese and have the The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemison queued up for my travel reading. So my non-fiction pile right these days is limited. My current non-fiction pile:I’m read a metric ton of cooking magazines, after my wife reads them. I’m working on the current Cook’s Illustrated, read while I eat meals. Milk Street is next.I have a pile of “when there’s nothing else to read at the table” books that include Lawrence of Arabia: The Literary Impulse by Stanley and Rodelle Weintraub. It’s better than I hoped.I just finished up Lost Gay Novels, by Anthony Slide, a good at-meal read about 50 early 20th century novels about gay men that have fallen into obscurity. And I have the Japan Forum’s recent issue on Kawabata Yasunari's work in PDF form to read for research. His work deserves a new look, as it turns out his secretary Nakazato Tsuneko probably wrote some of the work attributed to him. She is now being credited in several cases as a co-author.

What are the top 10 rock&roll songs everyone should know?

What are the top 10 rock&roll songs everyone should know? It’s hard to argue with the list that Rolling Stone Magazine came up with but it’s a pretty subjective topic. Perhaps not the list I’d give personally but here it is;1. Bob Dylan Like a Rolling Stone 19612. The Rolling Stones Satisfaction 19653. John Lennon Imagine 19714. Marvin Gaye What’s Going on 19715. Aretha Franklin Respect 19676. The Beach Boys Good Vibrations 19667. Chuck Berry Johnny B. Goode 19588. The Beatles Hey Jude 19689. Nirvana Smells Like Teen Spirit 199110. Ray Charles What'd I Say (part 1&2) 1959source: Rolling_Stones_Magazine_TOP500_Songs (1).pdf
