PDF Editor FAQ

How many .22 LR shots to the chest/abdomen are needed to stop a rushing attacker?

The .22LR is typically avoided as a self-defense cartridge by some not (simply) due to the lack of energy but rather because it’s rimfire primed, which is inherently (somewhat) less reliable than boxer/berdan primed cartridges. That said, the .22LR IS used by some for defense and has proven that it can be effective in stopping a threat even if it’s far from ideal for that role. Here’s an interesting piece of history: the American 180 was a fully automatic .22LR that was reminiscent of the Thompson and sported a 177 round drum magazine that sat on top of the receiver (much like the Bren), with 275 round drums also available. They fired at 1200 rounds per minute and were, believe it or not, marketed to law enforcement agencies. There was one such instance, according to Ian McCollum of Forgotten Weapons, where the American 180 was deployed during a police chase with a 40-round burst being fired at the driver and passenger after the vehicle’s occupants opened fire on the pursuing officers. This burst of .22LR ended the chase promptly. The driver died at the scene and the passenger was taken to the hospital with multiple gun shot wounds. It’s not ideal, but the .22LR can get the job done with the right placement.

I would like to send an article to Reminisce Magazine. It is a magazine about old times. What is your advice for a subject that would peak the most interest and would be chosen for publication?

I would seriously read several issues and try to get a serious feel for its different departments and sections and then try to figure out some story ideas targeted for specific departments. then I would pitch them and be careful that your pitches aren’t too long. Editors have notoriously short attention spans. If you don’t hear back from them, try again.Good luck

What is the difference between the New York Times, the New York Post, and the New Yorker?

The New York Post and the New York Times are daily newspapers that publish 365 issues a year -- 366 on leap years, and the occasional "extra" edition in the event of world-shaking news, like the 9-11 terrorist attacks. The New Yorker is a weekly magazine that publishes 47 issues per year and covers news, the arts, culture and anything else of interest. The three are very different in some respects but similar in others. Since they're all based in New York, they focus a good deal on things that happen in that city, but the Post is the most New York-centric of the three. The main differences between the Post and the Times are ones of tone, style, appearance, choice of story subjects -- its personality, if you will. The Post is a "tabloid," which describes its size. It has a smaller page format, folded together like a magazine so that it can be read more easily by commuters in the subway, while the Times is a broadsheet that would be difficult to open fully to a story on the inside pages in a crowded subway. The Post gives more prominence to salacious stories--think sex, drugs, scandal, betrayal, and such -- and it is designed with a lurid red and black color scheme reminiscent of gory, true-crime novels. The big, bold, clever, and often risqué front-page headlines are my favorite feature of the Post. Here are some headlines I enjoyed:CLOAK AND SHAG HER (CIA boss Petraeus resigns over sexual affair)HO-NO! (Gov. Spitzer gets caught with a prostitute)A-FRAUD (Pretty much any story about former Yankee player A-Rod)WEINER EXPOSED (Pretty much any story about Anthony Weiner)The Times, meanwhile, is recognized as the best newspaper in America and, perhaps, the world. It is an annual winner of Pulitzer Prizes, and has so far amassed 117 of them, beginning in 1918 for its coverage of World War I. The Times is one of the few newspapers that has been successful in monetizing the Internet because it is so well-known and well-respected worldwide that people are willing to pay a subscription fee to read it online. The Times is filled with national and international news, and it has a section for virtually any interest under the sun: Opinion, books, the arts, food, movies, sports, health, science, technology, business, weather, fashion, theater, home and garden, business . . . you get the idea. Because of the strength of its brand and the advertising and subscriptions it commands, the Times is that rare newspaper that still has a commitment to covering the world with reporters stationed all over the globe. Of the three publications we are comparing, the Times has by far the largest editorial staff. It also is known for the urbane, somewhat formal voice of its writing. While other newspapers refer to their story subjects by last name only on second reference, the Times uses courtesy titles such as Ms., Mr., Dr., Senator, and the like in every instance. So where Tom Hanks becomes "Hanks" after a first reference in the Post, he will always be "Mr. Hanks" in the Times, one of the last remaining places in America where we can still daily witness civility, or a reasonable facsimile thereof. If I seem to have ignored the New Yorker magazine, it is only because I've saved the best for last. I don't mind revealing that I've been a subscriber to this beloved magazine for more than 20 years, even after it beefed up its website and nearly doubled its subscription fee. Don't tell this to the New Yorker's circulation department, but it's a bargain at any price.Where else can you find the best fiction writers working today, while also learning first about (for instance) the faked intelligence that the Bush Administration used to railroad the nation into a bogus war in Iraq? If only Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld had subscribed to the New Yorker, they too would have been privy, before the invasion, to information that was only available to people, like myself, who read. Just think how differently things might have turned out -- how many lives saved -- if the Triumvirate of Torture had but read the New Yorker's investigative news stories! They could have rushed in and stopped themselves from lying about Saddam Hussein, the yellowcake uranium, and the weapons of mass destruction. But no, they failed to subscribe to the New Yorker, which caused them to fail the nation by failing (hat trick!) to stop themselves from lying and selling that lie to the United Nations and the world. I guess what I'm saying is, the New Yorker saves lives. Or it could have, if only . . . well, you know, the things I just said. For my money, the New Yorker publishes the best long-form journalism in the United States, the best short fiction, poetry, opinion, and humor writing, plus the best movie, music, book, theater and culture reviews. And don't forget the cartoons. The New Yorker is known for its smart cartoons, and for the original illustrations that grace the cover of each edition, every week. So, there you have it. The difference between the New York Times, the New York Post and the New Yorker. I hope this information is all you'd hoped it would be, and that it changes your life in ways that neither of us could have imagined.
