I think the reason I didn’t graduate was that I got charged out of state tuition because they chose the locations of my recent Indiana Army National Guard activation over my home of record for tuition purposes. Even though I was a state resident, paid state taxes, and had a state driver’s license and had been living in Indiana the the majority of my life, graduated from high school there, and enlisted in the state national guard there.I doubt this is a common experience, but the culture in the university’s administration seemed pretty accepting of their destruction of my future. It took me a week just to get them to acknowledge that I, a veteran, was not a dependent of my wealthy mother who wanted nothing to do with funding my education to even qualify for loans even though my FAFSA said I was independent.Eventually I dropped out, despite being in the honors college and working IT and being a paid research assistant and performing well academically, because I went broke after attending two semesters on two different fiscal years under many assurances that they would fix my tuition and refund me all out-of-state charges.Not sure how prevalent these practices are at universities in general, but I imagine the predatory culture that enabled a finance lady to make me cry in person, telling me that since I physically lived on a military installation that my home of record didn’t count, probably causes others to drop out for reasons that have nothing to do with their actual performance. My best friend kicked ass in the computer science program there while helping his wife raise a daughter and was constantly worried about his finances despite qualifying for every type of scholarship and doing work-studies. He still barely managed a 3.0 and his job prospects were extremely mediocre despite tons of extracurricular experience that landed him two years later in Salesforce where he’s had recruiters from all over silicon valley recruit him, most notably Google.Purdue did very little to ease his academic pursuits there and his extracurricular merits, for instance designing and running the state’s library databases, barely patched over his financial needs to enable his degree’s completion.I may as well drop another anecdote while I’m here. The calculus class I took gave me a B+ or some bullshit even though my test score set the curve on every exam. I was in a small summer class where a majority of the grading pool was retaking it and better understood the system. I only performed averagely on the quizzes which tanked my grade.I imagine this would drive poor people away from the university since they’re competing with students that can afford to retake classes as often as they’d like just to pass.Undergraduate there seems to be awful by every measurement that I can think of, you get very little time with professors unless you engage extra-curricular research since all the tenured professors opt out of teaching and let adjunct do all the dirty work. I hear similar things about WUSTL and this seems to be common practice in the private sector. Or so my friend that organized the adjunct protests and handled the negotiations for improved conditions there says so.It just blows my mind that a public institution so gladly embraces capitalist greed and puts that cost on our youth, prioritizing funding for sports and entertainment over quality of education or care and concern for individual students.
