What is the mechanism in chemistry that causes an element to have a different property just by adding or subtracting a proton, neutron and especially an electron?

Well, the first part is not quite right. Many things are grouped together in columns. So, on the far right column is the "noble gases". They are similar in that they colorless, orderless gases that don't react much. Their melting and boiling points are close together too, less than 10C. This is explained by their: their outer shell of valence electrons is considered to be "full", giving them little tendency to participate in chemical reactions. Their atomic numbers are 2, 10, 18, 36, 54, 86.In general groups, period and blocks on the table have things in common. These are related to the arrangement of the electron shells and how easily they interact with other elements. As they get bigger the outer shell is farther from the nucleus. Each lower element has a lower ionization energy because it is easier to remove an electron since the atoms are less tightly bound. There are many other trends in the table that it might be worth looking at to understand the full extent of what you are asking.

What are some of the best kept secrets in the personal hygiene world?

Secrets, eh? Hmm.I will reiterate your comment about shampoo. The stuff is useless and bad for you! Stay away! Use conditioner to wash your hair instead. Add a drop of lavender, tea tree, or peppermint oil to your conditioner to clean your scalpParabens and other chemicals are in most conditioner and lotion type products, and they are no good. The only reason they're even in there is because they are cheap. Paraben free is the way to be!!Baking soda is your best friend!! You can use it to make toothpaste, deodorant, foot scrub, and it works! I went around my whole life thinking I was smellier than most people, because deodorant would not work properly for me. I had to buy multiple different kinds, and switch off between them, because each would lose its effectiveness after a few weeks. I wasn't crazy about the terrible chemical fragrances either. After I'd read an article about how shaving your armpits and using deodorant significantly increased ones chances of getting breast cancer, I'd had enough. I set out to make my own deodorant. I did this by mixing equal parts coconut oil and Shea butter, adding tea tree oil and VETIVER OIL, and baking soda to form a paste like consistency. I've been using this for years now and my pits and nose and clothes have never been happier!I put VETIVER in all caps because it is the secret ingredient in my deodorant! Its amazingly earthy smell actually morphs your *grajo*(Spanish word for under arm funk) into something else, far more pleasant and less offensive than what my arm pits smell like after using traditional toxic deodorant(which for some reason would make me smell horse-like). While the vetiver is kicking ass and taking names, the baking soda is absorbing all of the odor causing funk, and the Shea butter and coconut oil are helping seal in the moisture your skin absorbed during the shower, therefore preventing it from drying out too much. You can use baking soda to defunk that smelly pair of shoes in your life, or to make kick ass toothpaste. Which brings me to my next secret…4. Turmeric toothpaste. Got bloody gums? Black gums? Painful puffy Gums? mix coconut oil and baking soda, add several drops of cinnamon or peppermint oil, and a bunch of turmeric. Yes, it'll be a bright yellow paste. You might want to add some stevia or xylitol to make it sweet if you require a sweet toothpaste. And while we are on the subject of oral hygiene, now’s a good time to talk about oil pulling5. Oil pulling is amazing for your mouth! It seems strange to dedicate 20 minutes to swishing around oil in your mouth, but trust me, your whole mouth will rejoice. I find if I start right before getting in the shower, I can economize on time and complete all of my self care duties instead of waiting around for 20 minutes to be up. Gotta brush your teeth after you oil pull, and spit the oil out when you're done(swallowing it is unhealthy and not recommended). *Edit*You can add essential oils like oil of oregano and cinnamon, clove, or theives blend. This will add a boost of germ killing and breath freshening power! And as I said, your mouth will rejoice (always be careful when using oregano, cinnamon, cloves or thieves oil. In particular, they are very strong and can burn if used undiluted. Depending on the brand you get, 1 drop of oregano may be too strong for some. ALWAYS wash hands after handling oils and AVOID touching your eyes, nose, or any broken skin/mucous membranes.)6. Flossing is awesome and necessary. I tricked my 6 year old into getting into flossing by simply letting him smell my floss when I was done flossing. I explained, “this is what it smells like, when germs hide!” And now he knows the value. I’ll take it a step further. I floss all my teeth, then swish hydrogen peroxide in my mouth immediately afterwards, taking care to swish it through my teeth, so that the bubbles get between my teeth and do the most damage to nasty germs. It works and feels great. I brush my teeth afterward.7. Perfume is killing us all! I'll spare you the entire rant on chemical fragrances and how they are toxic, unregulated, and harming us even if we don't know/feel anything. I'll say that fragrance, even the few good ones out there, WILL NOT ELIMINATE ODORS! At best, they can mask odor, but mainly by bombarding your olfactory epithelium with chemicals that numb. Kinda like if there is a sound that's annoying and then another louder sound comes in to “drown out” the annoying sound, but it's still there. Perfume is NEVER a substitute for good hygiene. That being said, I understand people wanna smell good. Essential oils(not fragrance oils) can make you smell good AND feel good! And there are many uses! Ok, this is starting to sound like an essential oil infomercial, so I'm going to stop right there :)8. There are glands behind our ears that secrete terrible smelling stuff. It smells like the inside of your belly button, a stench akin to old puss, not pleasant at all. It's super important to scrub behind your hears very regularly. Cleaning inside them is important too, and for that I recommend a Japanese earwax scraper. Much more efficient than a tips but require some practice.9. More on *grajo* and its effect on clothing: if you are having an issue with under arm funk sticking to your clothes, then get yourself a box of 20 mule borax and some white vinegar. 20 mule borax is a laundry detergent booster and house cleaner. I like to think of it as baking soda’s buff cousin, because like baking soda, it has no offensive perfume odor and can be used in a myriad of ways on a multitude of problems. Make a paste of the vinegar and 20 mule borax, and scrub that into the armpits of your stinkiest shirts prior to washing. This will help tremendously. However, it's worth mentioning that the need for doing this reduced once I switched to the natural deodorant. This works for any stubborn odors that get trapped in your clothes over time.EDIT:: thank you all so much for the response! Totally didn't expect it at all! I wrote this from my phone, off the top of my head, so I appreciate the edit suggestions. Adding more content because I've remembered some important things!!10. And this is a big one!! MILDEW AWARENESS!! This applies to everything from wetting your hair vs washing it, to shower curtains and corners to dish rags and sponges to camping gear left out in the rain. This is a big problem I want to bring awareness to because I go into countless homes that are otherwise clean but smell horribly of mildew for any number of the above listed situations. My freakishly strong sense of smell makes me particularly sensitive to the smell, which makes me realize that if it's so prevalent it's likely because most people aren't as sensitive to the smell and might not even perceive it at all. There are many simple steps one can take to keep mildew at bay and eradicate it when it does strike:10a. Wetting your hair vs washing it:Most people with curly hair are familiar with this. I learned as a kid in the 90s that this was a big Nono! Why? Because of the smell of mildew. Granted, back in those days, I was using suave shampoo and conditioner and dep gel. I didn't know any better about products, just the way I didn't immediately realize that wetting your hair vs washing your hair almost certainly will cause a mildew smell. As an adult, I now know that curly hair should only be washed with conditioner(add a few drops of peppermint oil to cleanse the scalp) or an appropriate curly hair shampoo(devacurl’s no-poo). I've also learned that if one must wet(instead of wash) one’s hair, it's best to do it by using a spray bottle which contains water and a few drops of lavender oil. This will make hair smell awesome AND the lavender will keep the nasty mildew at bay.10b. SHOWER CURTAINS AND CORNERS!!Huge culprit of mildew manufacturing!!! These plastic curtains trap moister and provide the perfect breeding ground! The solutions are simple!A. ALWAYS close your shower curtain after every showerB. Wash or replace your curtain periodically. I wash my plastic curtain in detergent with a touch of bleach.C. Make a spray that you can use to refresh your shower. Add a few drops of oil of oregano or tea tree oil to water(add lavender or geranium or your favorite oil to make it smell pretty) and spray after every shower. This will sabotage the mildew and get you some extra mileage out of your shower curtains.10c. Dishrags and sponges!! THE BIGGEST OFFENDERS!!When you clean dishes with mildew-marinated sponges and rags, those dishes might be free of prior debris but are still very dirty and smelly! Same thing with rags used to wipe tables and counters, mops, towels, anything! Mildew will do what it does best, spread its repugnant stench and infest every surface it comes in contact with. This is serious! This is war! Defeat the enemy by preventing it from breeding! Mildew breeds in moist and stagnant environments. The following hacks will keep mildew at bay:if at all possible, opt for the scrubber pads (pictured below) as they are made of plastic, more porous, and dry much more quickly.Another softer alternative for your non-stick skillets and delicate items is cloth dish rags, like the ones pictured below:If you decide to use cloth rags or sponges, you will need to wring them out thoroughly and ensure that they dry ASAP to prevent mildew from gaining a foothold. If yoh live in a moist environment, you may want to consider using a plastic container with a soap bath. Get one of those restaurant soup containers with a lid, and keep a solution of soapy water in it. When you’re done doing dishes, plop the sponge or rag in the container and cover with the lid, as this will also keep mildew at bay.Color code counter dish rags to prevent accidentally drying dishes with a filthy mildew-ridden cloth(happens more often than you think, especially if you have guests that want to help out with the dishes) white can be used for wiping down countertops, as any spec of dirt will be visible. Use dark-colored Terri cloth or microfiber cloth rags for drying dishes. Keep them in separate areas if possible to prevent cross contamination.Edit: thank you so much for those of you who found this answer helpful, who upvoted, and who made edit suggestions. I initially wrote this off the top of my head, never expecting it to get any sort of attention. Thank you!
