There are two main reasons:Firstly, Episode 1 deliberately changed the aesthetic. The original trilogy and the sequel trilogy both have what’s known as a “used future” aesthetic. Along with Blade Runner, the original trilogy perfected this aesthetic.The world of the original trilogy was a lived-in world. A world covered in sand and dust and grime. A world of spaceships with peeling paint and robots held together by gum and paperclips. A world full of poor farmers and desperate rebels making do with whatever they had.But the prequels wanted to show the Galactic Republic before it collapsed. It gave us a world of shiny, brand-new ships, robots fresh off the assembly line, and everything bright, and clean and colorful. This was a time of wealth and prosperity. The story follows big, important people from the “bright center of the universe,” as Luke put it.But secondly, the effects were shit. The originals were made during the golden age of practical effects, by people who were masters of their craft, led by a George Lucas, a visionary when it came to practical effects.I’m not overselling him when I say that 70s/80s George Lucas was a visionary. The original Star Wars looked real in a way that no science fiction movie had before. Whenever practical, the sequel trilogy stuck to the same practical effects.But Episode 1 was released in 1999. It was the first movie to really make extensive use of CGI, and it shows. Look at the Starfighter up there. It doesn’t look real. It has no weight, no texture. It just looks wrong.George Lucas wanted complete creative freedom to create his universe for the prequels. But the technology to do what he wanted just didn’t exist at the time, and wouldn’t for the next 10–15 years.As the prequel trilogy progressed, the special effects department had time to improve, and the effects got more real. But Episode 1 was their first foray into CGI — and it was a failure.This is Chewbacca with a Porg from the sequels. The Porg doesn’t look entirely “real,” but it doesn’t look out of place next to Chewbacca — himself a practical effect.

The origins of Mace Windu lie with the origins of Star Wars itself.In a very early draft of a 13-page story outline Lucas had written in 1973, titled “Journal of the Whills Part 1,” a character called “Mace Windy” was a Jedi-bendu who served as the court warlord of the chairman of the Alliance of Independent Systems, and served as a focus for the story as told by his padawaan, Chuiee. Court officials became afraid that he was powerful enough to challenge the Emperor and conspired to dismiss him. In “Journal of the Whills Part 2” the two would have an adventure where they were called back by the Alliance Chairman under mysterious circumstances. All in all it read like a weird and fragmented mixture of Frank Herbert’s Dune with what we know to be Star Wars today.Over the years this story served as a starting point and inspiration for Lucas as he experimented and created other characters, until he eventually came up with a draft where Han was a freaky fish guy and Luke punches Leia in the face.Obviously he went through quite a lot of drafts.When it came time to write Episode I, Lucas kept this outline on his desk and used it as a sort of loose inspiration for the storyline, once again telling a tale of how a Jedi and his apprentice come to help at the urgent request of royalty. While it focused instead on Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi as the principle characters, he wrote Mace Windu as a high-ranking member of the Jedi Council.It is rumored that Samuel L. Jackson was among a number of actors who requested to have cameos. Lucas decided, evidently, that he had a better role in mind than a Stormtrooper.What does Jedi-bendu mean?
