Here, raining is obviously a long action.If the sentence doesn't fit in any of the above situation, then without thinking you have to put it in passé composé.There is no easy way of learning it. First of all you should remember at least a little difference between regular and irregular verbs. You should know the endings well and you should remember the format of transforming a sentence to all the tenses. If you just know the basic rules of the endings and the format, its really easy.And as passé simple is difficult for you, try to solve more exercises based on it. Language students should read graded readers at their level until they are confident and can easily read a level 6 graded reader with absolutely no problems. Only then will you be ready for original English literature.Open the graded reader and read the first page. Copy the second paragraph into your notebook on the left-hand side. We start with the 2nd paragraph because the introduction often uses exceptional structures and vocabulary to catch the reader’s attention. We want to start with writing that is more ‘normal’.Try to copy the grammar of the original sentence but change some of the content words to make the sentence your own.Original text -I was most afraid of my cousin John. He enjoyed frightening me and making me feel unhappy.Your new sentences-Jake was very scared of his brother David.
