Yes, absolutely. One day near the end of the school year I got a notice about after school programs for the coming year. My daughter’s school has about half kids with autism, in a program that draws children from around the city, and half kids in regular education. It’s not an inclusion school—the autism classrooms are separate.The flyer gave the prices for the after school program. There were two tiers of prices listed—-those for kids WITH autism and those for kids WITHOUT autism. The cost for kids with autism was FIVE TIMES HIGHER than the other kids’ price.This is a public school. And a school especially supposed to be there to give kids with autism a public school experience. The flyer talked about how great the after-school experience was going to be—-for the REGULAR kids. They would have a program with all kinds of activities. Then it described the autism program. The kids in that would stay in their classrooms, and not have access to any of the activities the REGULAR kids would.Well, I blew up. If you know me, you know that’s a VERY rare thing. It takes something major to make me angry. I’ve only been as angry as I was that day maybe two other times in my whole life.I started writing letters, to anyone and everyone at the school system I thought should know about this flyer. I sent copies of the flyer to many people.The next day, a new flyer came home, apologizing for the first flyer and saying it was “sent out without authorization”.Overall, my experience with my daughter in public schools has been wonderful. The schools are filled with teachers and others who work with autistic kids that are so devoted it’s truly amazing, wonderful, wonderful people I love.I do think this flyer was sent out by someone without authorization. But it went home, to a school with about a thousand students. It still makes me a bit angry to think about.

A young man was distributing flyers today during my morning commute.It was a normal sight in Chicago - kind of like what you’d see above.As a woman, who was several feet in front of me, approached him, he kindly extended a flyer to her.As in, not disrespectfully waving the flyer right in her face.I had the unfortunate opportunity to witness the woman, who was clearly absorbed in her smartphone, inappropriately flick the flyer out of the young man’s hand in a clearly agitated, “get out of my face,” kind of way. As he scrambled to pick it back up, the woman was gone by then.And now it was approaching my turn.I admit that my thought process approaching people handing out flyers typically strays along the lines of “Ahhh, not this again…” while frantically thinking of various waves to maneuver around them and avoid their attention.As I approached the young man, he extended a flyer to me.And I did what the woman before me today could not.I gave him a quick smile and said the following:“Hey - no thank you man.”And I was on my way.So what is something that needs to be said?Treat people who are distributing flyers kindly, and with respect.As in, don’t flick the flyers out of their hand when they extend it to you.I get it, you have somewhere to be. And you don’t care about their product, service, or whatever they’re promoting.But here’s the thing - chances are, they do not want to be there.I distributed flyers for a student club back in college once, and only once. I’m determined not to have to do it again, and certainly wouldn’t want to be distributing flyers during the morning in the humid streets of Chicago.I urge everyone to think empathetically on this one - do you really think people handing out flyers want to be there?The answer is no - chances are, they’re just doing their job.What these people are doing is not laboriously hard, but it certainly is mentally exhausting.Self-promoting is awkward for most. It feels embarrassing.And until you distribute flyers to strangers yourself, it can be hard to understand just how difficult it is to put yourself in front of people knowing that most will completely ignore you, while forcing yourself to NOT take it personally.You’ll be thinking to yourself “I can’t wait until this is over…” for every second of every moment.You will feel alienated, and it will be humiliating.The last thing any reasonable human being wants is handing out flyers to strangers, only to have some high-and-mighty individual embarrasses you by smacking a flyer out of your hand and making you scramble to pick it up in public.The answer is simple - be nice, say your “no thank yous,” and be on your way.

Someone thought I was (at least) 23 years younger than I am. When I went a town hall in my community, someone started to hand me a flyer about a candidate, then yanked it back, saying, “You aren’t old enough to vote, are you?”I’m 40.People also think my father is my grandfather, or that I’m still in college.
