What is the difference between asphalt paving and sealcoating?

Asphalt paving is used primarily to build a new road, rehabilitate and old road, for temporary paving, or to patch segments of roadway. In the picture below, they are working the base material prior to placing asphalt. The picture below is in the same vicinity as above, but showing the asphalt pavement section being built in stages. The area to the right of the barrels will be brought up to the same level, eventually. When building a new road, the asphalt pavement comes after compacting the subgrade material, and bringing in and compacting base material, and subbase if used. The asphalt can be placed at varying thicknesses, but it generally ranges from 2″ to 8″ thick, and is placed in lifts if greater than 3 to 4″. This means that they will place one layer and roll and compact it, then place the next layer, and so on.The picture below shows an asphalt paving train.A dump truck full of asphalt concrete connects to a conveyor that distributes the asphalt concrete into the hopper of the paver which lays out the asphalt pavement. A drum roller comes behind this operation and compacts the asphalt. This is done in multiple lifts, normally. This is what it looks like behind the paving machine. The point is, asphalt paving is a complete operation in which several inches of asphalt concrete is put down to make pavement. An asphalt sealcoat is a pavement preservation technique used to prolong the life of existing asphalt pavement. It preserves the life by re-sealing the asphalt from water and other debris that would reduce the integrity of the asphalt. The sealcoat can prolong the life of the pavement anywhere from 5 to 7 years. The asphalt sealcoat process begins with crack sealing about a year in advance of the seal coat.If there are areas that are in need of repair, this is the time to do that too. When it is time to sealcoat, they will sweep the roadway, cover up inlets and things with roofing paper that you don’t want to get covered with asphalt emulsion, place roofing paper down at the approaches and driveways, and then lay down the asphalt emulsion. They will then place a layer of rocks, or cover coat down.Sometimes, with a slurry seal, they will place the emulsion over the top of the rocks.Either way, pneumatic rollers will follow and set the rock into the asphaltic emulsion. After the pneumatic rollers are done, a broom comes along and removes the excess rock that isn’t going to stick. They can’t get all of it though because the pressure would remove more rock than desirable from the seal coat. This is what the traveling public doesn’t quite understand. They need to drive a maximum of 35 mph on a fresh sealcoat, or they will make rocks fly into windshields of the cars around them. The rest of the work is done by traffic. It is actually very important to get traffic onto a seal coat as soon as the emulsion has set enough to allow it. If it isn’t set, it will make a mess of the vehicles driving on it. The traffic actually works the rock into the seal coat even more. This is the seal coat process. It is just to seal the asphalt and prolong the life of existing asphalt pavement.
