PDF Editor FAQ

What was the cruelest thing a company has ever done to you as an employee?

I was teaching at a small Catholic high school in the Midwest. It was my first teaching job, and at the end of my first year I received an evaluation from my principal telling me that I have done a fantastic job, and one that he considered to be better than what he had done as a first-year teacher. I felt like I could be happy there in the long term. I got married that summer and came back for my second year.I was made the junior class sponsor, which meant I was in charge of overseeing preparations for the junior-senior prom. I was also put in charge of the senior service project, since I was one of these senior theology teachers. In January, we opened a newly rebuilt and remodeled section of the building following a massive fire the previous year. One of the individuals at that open house was a teacher and coach at the Catholic elementary school in town, and he inquired in great detail about my job, about my classes, and about my feelings about the school and it's administration. During the course of the conversation, he mentioned that he hoped to be teaching near the following year.Fast forward to the end of March. I had just spent a few weeks working my butt off to see the senior service project, with 12th graders all over the metropolitan area, went off without a hitch. I had also gotten the last of the contract signed for prom, so everything was ready to go in 2 weeks. My principal asked if I could drop by his office during my off period, and when I did so he informed me that my contract would not be renewed for the following year. He told me he would have waited until after prom to tell me, but that this was the last legal day under state law that he could not renew my contract. The non-renewal was to be kept confidential, and it was simply going to be said that I had decided to seek other opportunities. Two nights later was the board meeting. I never attended those, as it wasn't an expectation. The following morning I had several students come into my classroom and inform me that their parents who were on the board told them that I had been fired. I was outraged. But what outraged me even more was when they told me that their former basketball coach had been hired to fill my position as well as be athletic director at the school.Apparently the decision to not renew my contract had been made before Christmas because our assistant principal who had been acting as athletic director had too much on his plate to continue with the job and the coach from the elementary school was the choice of several board members to fill the job. It just so happened he taught the same subjects I did oh, so that meant I had to go. But rather than tell me months early, they concealed the information from me so that I would keep on giving my best effort with arranging for prom and organizing the service project. The real kicker was that three of the local school districts had advertised openings in my subject areas (I also taught History and English) that I had not applied for and which had already been filled. There were no further teaching jobs that year in fields within 50 miles of my home.Frankly, it's shady as all hell for a school to decide not to renew a person's contract and hire his replacement but not tell him until months later, interfering with his ability to find new employment. There's a very limited window for teachers to find a job.In the end, it may have been one of the better things that ever happened to me. The following year I found a new job in a new state and have had a wonderful and rewarding career successfully teaching in public schools.

What's the shadiest thing your employer did before firing you?

I grew up outside US, and just don't understand the rationale. Why can an 18 year old walk into a store and buy a gun, when that same 18 year old can not walk into a store a buy a beer?

Because of MADD and the NRA.MADD is “Mothers Against Drunk Driving”. Around 1980, their campaign to significantly tighten alcohol laws started gaining steam. They regularly got the BAC limits for driving reduced, got DUIs to be treated more seriously and started to feel their power. One of the most heart wrenching tales they would trot out is of their kid coming back from prom or a graduation party, their whole future ahead of them, then *snap* gone forever due to a drunk driver. It was an era of increasing federalism and a sense that people needed to be compelled to act in their own interests. We saw this with mandatory seatbelt laws and then, to answer your question, to rid high schools of binge drinking, the minimum drinking age was hiked back to 21 (which used to be the age if adulthood until the 60s lowered it). It helped that we were just beginning to see that much of what was done in the 60s wasn't really for the best, we were just unclear on what should be rolled back….Ok, but where does the NRA come into it? See, there's no serious movement in the country to eliminate alcohol sales to the public. We learned our lesson with prohibition. But there is such a movement afoot with guns. As Newton and Marx alluded: for every action there is a reaction; and so to counter the forces trying to destroy gun rights, the NRA jumped to the fore of gun related political discourse. But there was no equivalent organization for defending beer sales to teens.Which is why you can still buy a long gun at 18, but have to wait until you're 21 to buy a brewski to wash the dust from range out of your throat. Now, my idea is that we should tie voting ages to the ability to buy alcohol, tobacco or firearms, sign a lawful contract, and be officially free of your parents to voting: you can vote in given municipality when you can do all those things unrestricted.
