PDF Editor FAQ

What did a neighbor see going on at your house that you were unaware of?

My neighbor called me at work one day, saying, “Kathie, your house is on fire.”I laughed. My neighbor was such a joker, always kidding around.“No, seriously, the cops are here, too. They’ve got German Shepherd dogs sniffing around outside.”I promptly freaked out and ran to my car. I only lived about six miles away, but I was in downtown Atlanta, after all. I proceeded to drive home at about 100 miles an hour.“Calm down,” I said to myself. “No need to kill yourself. Maybe I’ll turn on the radio…”Guess what song was playing? As God is my witness, I hear Talking Heads’ Burnin’ Down the House! Laughing and trying not to cry, I got a grip and finally pulled up to my house. The fire trucks were gone, but sure enough, cops were circling the house with two dogs.I walked in the front door, which was hanging open. A terrible scream startled me. Then, I realized that it came out of my own mouth. Everything was drenched with water, some of it muddy. I went into the next room, where I screamed again. My ceiling fans had melted and were hanging down like perverse plastic flowers. My TV looked like something out of a Dali painting. My bedroom was the worst, because that’s where the fire was set. My clothes and my bedspread had been set on fire. Unharmed, in the center of the room, was a picture of my boyfriend and me in front of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, where we had just taken our first trip together a week ago.The cops asked a lot of questions because they knew it was arson of some sort, but they quickly verified that I’d been at work all morning. They pointed out the “roach” of a joint on my coffee table, where the arsonist had smoked one and probably planned his actions. The cops never did much detective-type work, and eventually I “solved” the crime myself, but the perpetrator was already in jail by then for grand theft auto. He was a 19-year-old neighbor of mine, whom I’d never even met.All this turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me! A couple of days later, my boyfriend got laid off. He said, “Y’know what? We’re the perfect couple for the ’90s.”I said, “what!?” He said, “Yeah, you’re homeless, and I’m unemployed!”He was laughing about it! I thought to myself, now there’s a guy who has a sense of humor about life!My insurance company wanted me to go to an extended stay hotel. I said that my boyfriend operated his Victorian home as a B+B, and it was a mile from my work, so they paid him $1200 a month to put me up. This paid his mortgage, until he got a new, better job a month later. We were also now living together. We loved it!The house still wasn’t finished three months later, when the Olympics came to town. My boyfriend informed the insurance company that the rates went up. They couldn’t find anyplace else for me, (of course, because the Olympics were in town), so they paid him some ridiculous rate. I got a great settlement from State Farm, sold the house and we’ve been happily married for 19 years now.

When did you realize something was a blessing in disguise?

When my house burned down. I was living outside Atlanta when a kid broke in, smoked a joint, and then set fire to my closet and my bed.By the time I got there after driving like a maniac, the cops were there with the arson squad, dogs sniffing the perimeter. I had no idea what the inside would look like. When I entered, EVERYTHING was covered in water and black soot. I would go into a room and scream. Then go into another and do the same thing. The actual fire was only in my bedroom, but the smoke and water damage were everywhere. The shock of seeing all my antique furniture ruined was terrible. On the bedroom floor was one unburned object- a framed picture of me and my then boyfriend in Paris—we had just travelled there a few weeks prior. He had just been laid off from his job.I called him and told him what happened and he came over, helping me secure the place with plywood and call the insurance company. Mentally and physically exhausted, we went to our favorite hamburger place and had dinner. He said to me, “You know what? We’re the perfect couple for the 90’s.” I said, “What’re you talking about?” He says, “Well, you’re homeless, and I’m unemployed!” with a big, shit-eating grin. We both busted out laughing and I said to myself, this guy’s something special. He manages to have a sense of humor in the darkest times. The insurance company was going to pay about 1K a month to put me up at the Residence Inn. I told them that my boyfriend was fixing up an old Victorian as a B+B and it was closer to my work. So they paid HIM instead. They paid his mortgage through the spring just when he needed it. Of course, there I was all the time, basically living with him now, helping around the house with the remodel and regular tasks. We fell even more in love and got engaged. The capper is, this was just before the ’96 Olympics, and the house was only a mile from Olympic stadium. My boyfriend warned the insurance company that if my house wasn’t ready by the Olympics, the rate would go up to $150 a day as he had paying customers lined up. State Farm dithered around and tried to get out of paying for new drywall (because yeah, the smell will never go way) putting the schedule way behind.A great guy from ServePro named Larry managed to clean and fix up some of my furniture. (I’m ever thankful to you, Larry!) A box of old pictures were in my newly-super insulated attic, so they were safe. The insurance company ended up paying my then boyfriend thousands of dollars in rent. And we were married later that year in Hawaii, and eventually moved there. All because of a shitty thing that randomly happened to me. I care a lot less about material possessions now.

How will partnering with State Farm help Quicken Loans grow their customer base?

Looks like a pretty good match to me! State Farm has a massive database of clients with home insurance, and many of those customers will also have indicators showing existing home loans. They’ll also show customers who have any type of supplemental insurance (such as earthquake, or flood) which could impact the risk management of that customer’s account.Depending on the full details of the partnership, Quicken would be able to select specific customer profiles to match their existing loan products. For example, they could look at customers going back 10 years or so, and determine that they might be prime candidates for refinancing (if they haven’t done so already) simply because they purchased their homes when interest rates were far higher. Or they could select long-time customers who by now have substantially reduced loan balances with the idea of a home equity loan or reverse mortgage. In return, I’d assume State Farm would collect revenue on each database customer, as well as perhaps some profit-sharing from Quicken. So it’s a win-win: Quicken ends up with the ability to selectively market to a solid customer base, and State Farm ends up with some profits.Additionally, I’d assume that State Farm would also end up with Quicken’s customer (and potential customer) database, and could easily cross-match against their current customers; State Farm would be able to market their full range of insurance products (Life, Health, auto, property insurance, disability, etc.) to both existing Quicken customers and potential Quicken customers. There may also be a consumer advantage here, too: Quicken and/or State Farm may be able to do promotional cross selling, so that rates/mortgages are “bundled”, and the loan’s rate may be slightly lower—or fees reduced—or State Farm gives some kind of discount to Quicken customers. All in all, the potential is there for an interesting, and profitable, relationship between the two companies.
