PDF Editor FAQ

What is something we don't know about working as a police officer?

You May not know how much I loved the freedom of being a police officer. I was a Texas State Trooper with the highway patrol. We took our patrol cars home. So when I left the house in the morning, as soon as I backed out of my driveway I was at work. I would call dispatch and tell them I was 10–8, 10–41. Which meant I was in service and beginning my tour of duty. Sometimes I would stop a car a block from my house or it might be 30 or 40 minutes later. Sometimes I would go two weeks without ever seeing my boss. We were trained to handle our business and turned loose. The modern day micro management hadn’t effected us yet. We would work our way two counties over and meet some other troopers at a lake restaurant for some catfish. Sometimes we would head out three or four counties away and work a rodeo or a chili cookoff. The cars I got to drive were also great. I started with a 1987 Ford Mustang, one of the best pursuit cars I ever had. I drove a Chevy Iroc Camaro, which was a great car. I drove a Chevy Caprice with the LT1 Corvette engine, that car was a blast. My last vehicle was a Ford Explorer with the twin turbo Eco boost engine, really a great patrol vehicle. Had so much fun driving over the years. Went through a high speed driving course In Oklahoma, it was balling I’m telling you.As a state trooper the area I worked on an average day was 3 to 4 counties. Never boring really, you could always go somewhere and find something to get into. We backed up P.D.s, S.O.s, Game Wardens, even the occasional federal agent. I worked all over the state in my career. Worked riots in Dallas, Austin, Corsicana. Did hurricane duty on the coast several times. Worked the Mexico-Texas border for 3 years. Hardly ever a dull day.The shooting practice was also a blast. I was a gun enthusiast, so the more shooting practice the better. I’ve carried in my career the following. Colt 45, Winchester 12 gauge shotgun, M16 full auto rifle, S&W 357 magnum, Sig Sauer P220 45 auto, Sig Sauer P226 DA/SA 9mm, Sig Sauer 357, Sig P226 DA/SA, Sig Sauer P226 357sig DA only, Ruger Mini 14 rifle, Remington 870 12 ga. Police shotgun, Remington police magnum 12 ga. Shotgun, Mossberg 12ga. Police shotgun, M4 5.56 bushmaster rifle. We had Shooting competitions and practices all the time. Just imagine getting paid to become a better shot. The ammo was free and so was the camaraderie. I spent about 4 years on a district shooting team which was also a blast. Got to meet some world class shooters that were as good as Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill Cody. It was truly a great adventure of epic proportions, I would start all over again tomorrow and do it all over again. Now on a somber note there were tough times. I lost several friends along the way. It is only by the grace of God that I am still here. The last three years were trying with all the hatred towards the police. It has broken my heart. But that’s all I’m going to say about that. Hope you enjoyed.

What are some of the best places to live in Texas in terms of crime and employment?

Jobs…Houston…hands down… (You did not mention your work field) Dallas/Ft Worth is good too. If I knew your field, I could be more help.CRIME: Don’t live in the inner city anywhere, Find a suburb…buy a house in a subdivision and good luck. If you choose Houston..try SOUTH suburbs…League City, etc…that is OUTSIDE HARRIS County and the commute is tough… Except for DEER PARK,,,say away from the Houston ship channel area for living.San Antonio is good, but jobs are ‘more specific’… no real oil or heavy industry….Buy a place north of I-10…you can buy inside 1604, but BE CAREFUL…HUNTINGTON subdivisions for now are good..but stay away from ‘service hub’ all along the areas close to I-10 through out the city…SA is putting low cost apartments in those areas and the crime and drugs are coming along with that. Ask me how I know.If you are in OIL RELATED FIELD of work…pick your town…pick a good neighborhood recommended by your company. HOUSES ARE CHEAP…COST OF LIVING IS LOW… We have GOOD COPS all over the place. Schools are good the farther away from the Mexico border you get. (we, by law, HAVE to take illegal children into our schools…most do not speak English)Lastly,,,be careful in El Paso. My birth place. And also be careful ANYWHERE along the Texas-New Mexico-Mexico border… Things are getting out of control there and the democratic mindset of New Mexico really doesn’t seem to care. They do little about the drug ‘trucks’ and the illegal ‘buses’ who bring the drugs and illegals and crime along the border to find jobs and buyers along the Tx-NM border. They view the drug/illegal/crime traffic in their state as a “Texas-US Government Problem”. (we screened FOUR bus loads of ‘job applicants’ in Clovis, NM, for high paying, oil field labor jobs. 3 persons were drug free, none had USA documents and two persons offered me cocaine packets for a job)If you can find work…North EAST TEXAS is the SECRET OF TEXAS… Longview, Texarkana, Marshal, Tyler….up in the corner by Oklahoma and Arkansas. If you can find work there…schools are good, crime is low, housing is fair…Police do their jobs….
