PDF Editor FAQ

If magnesium is lighter than aluminium and was used in the construction of the Apollo program spacecraft, why is no one using magnesium alloys anymore in spacecraft design?

Ugh. Magnesium is reactive stuff. I had this thing I used to do at outdoor parties when I went to college where I’d take a strip of magnesium ribbon, wrap it around a screwdriver, punch a hole in a soda can, stick the screwdriver handle in the can to make a base, and light the magnesium on fire.Lit up the entire courtyard. Seriously.Magnesium reacts. It reacts exuberantly. It wants to oxidize. You can’t get it not to oxidize. You can use it for a vehicle that will only ever have to fly once and then gets thrown away, if you have nothing better. But modern spacecraft can use materials like exotic plastics and carbon fiber that aren’t actively trying to corrode away from under you.

Can I take vitamin D3, magnesium, and fish oil supplements at the same time? Is the combination of fish oil and magnesium okay?

Why is magnesium not used as a metal to make cylinder heads and engine blocks?

Please note: Due to a few helpful comments, I may be completely wrong in implicating this incident for the reason all-magnesium engine blocks aren’t used. It may be the case that the engine block contained little or no magnesium at all in the crashed vehicle. It seems like other parts, such as the chassis or body panels, were magnesium and they were responsible for the fires. I’ll do a little more research and either refine or delete my answer. Once I’ve revised the answer, if any of you helpful contributors would like to be credited or quoted, or would like an edit credited, please PM me and let me know. Felix Chen has posted a comment below that is probably nearest to the mark.—Original answer:In the 1955 Le Mans race, a crash of a Mercedes-Benz vehicle with a magnesium-rich alloy engine block flew into a crowd. The magnesium alloy block broke apart and ignited, spraying the crowd with white-hot burning magnesium, resulting in about 80 deaths and many more injuries. While the primary cause of spectator casualties was due to flying bits of race car, the fuel of the vehicle exploded, and heated the magnesium alloy block to the point of ignition. Magnesium burns so hot that it causes water to disassociate into it’s constituent hydrogen and oxygen atoms- essentially rocket fuel. When firefighters arrived on scene and sprayed the wreck down with water, they turned a bad situation into an explosive one, increasing the severity of the fire greatly, and on a public stage. I believe that this tragic, and fuck-off insane event led to the discontinuation of magnesium-rich alloys in motor vehicles. To this day, the magnesium content of motor vehicle parts is generally kept low in order to reduce the likelihood of a class-D metal fire in the event of an accident. On a personal note, I’ve ignited one of those magnesium firestarters with a heavy application of a propane blowtorch flame. It burns so hot that you can’t even look at it without suffering permanent damage to your vision. It ignites or liquifies nearly everything in it’s path, and water or CO2 just turns a burning hunk of metal into an unpredictable incendiary bomblet.Revised answer:Pure magnesium or alloys consisting of a high concentration of magnesium aren’t frequently used for manufacturing engine blocks and cylinder heads because magnesium’s poor resistance to creep, a material’s ability to resist permanent deformation under the kinds of mechanical and temperature stresses found inside an engine block. The 1955 Le Mans incident was notable (but largely irrelevant to this answer) in that it involved a vehicle that used magnesium or high-magnesium alloys for parts like body panels or the chassis, which have a higher surface-area/mass ratio, making these parts more prone to ignition. The engine block was actually made of an aluminum alloy, and this block did not undergo ignition as far as I can tell. Also, the majority of deaths were attributed to other large vehicle components from the drivetrain impacting the crowd at high speed. This is as near to the truth that I can get at this time. Due to this answer being published again in the Quora Digest, I will update this again to provide a more accurate answer. A big thanks to all of you in the comment section that contributed.

I am not an absolute professional in terms of computers, I build my websites for my work (Kraulkurse, Aquakuse and Triathlon Coaching) and everything in connection with it. I have only used CocoDoc as a contact and registration form and am very satisfied with it my modest ratios are enough for the free version of CocoDoc. Recently I also tried a survey with CocoDoc. Maybe there are better alternatives here, which are completely specialized in surveys, but here too Jotfrom is completely sufficient and I can even use it to display the results of the survey live on the website. This is a feature that others might have, but I found it only at CocoDoc For me, CocoDoc is a very good and reliable tool.
