Ugh. Magnesium is reactive stuff. I had this thing I used to do at outdoor parties when I went to college where I’d take a strip of magnesium ribbon, wrap it around a screwdriver, punch a hole in a soda can, stick the screwdriver handle in the can to make a base, and light the magnesium on fire.Lit up the entire courtyard. Please note: Due to a few helpful comments, I may be completely wrong in implicating this incident for the reason all-magnesium engine blocks aren’t used. It may be the case that the engine block contained little or no magnesium at all in the crashed vehicle. It seems like other parts, such as the chassis or body panels, were magnesium and they were responsible for the fires. I’ll do a little more research and either refine or delete my answer. The magnesium alloy block broke apart and ignited, spraying the crowd with white-hot burning magnesium, resulting in about 80 deaths and many more injuries. While the primary cause of spectator casualties was due to flying bits of race car, the fuel of the vehicle exploded, and heated the magnesium alloy block to the point of ignition. Magnesium burns so hot that it causes water to disassociate into it’s constituent hydrogen and oxygen atoms- essentially rocket fuel. When firefighters arrived on scene and sprayed the wreck down with water, they turned a bad situation into an explosive one, increasing the severity of the fire greatly, and on a public stage. I believe that this tragic, and fuck-off insane event led to the discontinuation of magnesium-rich alloys in motor vehicles. To this day, the magnesium content of motor vehicle parts is generally kept low in order to reduce the likelihood of a class-D metal fire in the event of an accident.On a personal note, I’ve ignited one of those magnesium firestarters with a heavy application of a propane blowtorch flame. It burns so hot that you can’t even look at it without suffering permanent damage to your vision.
