When asked how the election was “rigged” Trump referred to recent lower court decisions. The decisions overturned restrictive voting laws, intended to disenfranchise African-Americans and minority voters. To understand what Trump means by “rigged,” it's worth reading the Fourth Circuit's opinion. (Hyperlinked, also footnoted).The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit[1] said that North Carolina called it “…the most restrictive voting law North Carolina has seen since the era of Jim Crow.”[2] Adding that the target[ing] African Americans with almost surgical precision”[3] Legislators used data to discern the kinds of I.D.’s different racial groups possessed and then passed legislation that favored only the I.D.’s that white voters were more likely to have. The legislator excluded student IDs. They excluded municipal government IDs that African Americans were most likely to have.They also targeted same day registration and a full week of early voting. This eliminated “souls to the polls” Sunday many African American churches run. "Souls to the polls" allowed churches to provide transportation to voting places. The bombshell was how the process worked. First, legislators requested data on voting practices by race. And then upon, “receipt of the race data, the General Assembly enacted legislation that restricted voting and registration in five different ways…all of which disproportionately affected African Americans.”[4]John Oliver summed it up this way: “Just think about that: they didn’t just go with their gut ‘think’ it would be discriminatory. They got the spreadsheets, crunched the numbers, and made sure it would be.” He added, “I don’t know how you did it North Carolina, but you officially Moneyballed racism.” So, yes, Trump is laying the groundwork for a loss in November. If Trump walked up to the podium during the Republican National convention and said, “I want to introduce you to someone, a good friend of mine.” Entering from the left side of the stage, a man in a mask walks up to the microphone, with a quick snap of the wrist, his face exposed: Ashton Kutcher, a smirk and the line: “You’ve been Punk'd.”If Trump then went on to explain how disgusting he found it to play to the worst impulses of the Republican electorate, revealing how hard it was for him to play a racist, xenophobic fascist caricature of himself that Republican voters rallied behind, even voted for. And in the weeks and months that followed, if he came out with a long twelve-part mockumentary of his time as a Presidential candidacy, and gave the proceeds to charity.
