It was about 2:00am and the whole house was asleep until the doorbell rang. At this point our 5.5 lb ball of fluff starts barking as if he’s an actual deterrent to someone who wants to come into our house. I throw on a robe, go downstairs, and open the door to two police officers. They ask to be, and are allowed to enter, at which point they ask if we own a specific make, model, and color of pickup. I am momentarily confused because they are referring to a vehicle that my husband had purchased at an auction fairly recently that he kept parked behind his office/datacenter. I had pretty much forgotten about it and he really didn’t pay much attention to it, as will become obvious. They ask if we have a son (which we do), then if we know where he is. I say that I assume he’s in bed. The diligent officers ask if we’re REALLY sure he’s not out joyriding in the aforementioned pickup, but, since by this time he had noticed all the commotion and come out of his room, it becomes obvious that he is in fact home and also only seven. Apparently, the vehicle had just been reported as being driven crazily around a Walmart parking lot and running from law enforcement. If I remember correctly, there had been other reported incidents in the previous few days. We gradually came to the conclusion that the truck had been stolen about a week earlier, but due to its lack of use and non-prominent parking spot, no one had noticed it was missing. It had also conveniently (for the thief) been left unlocked with the keys inside. My husband threw some clothes on and drove to the police station in the jurisdiction the truck had been stolen from to make an official police report. It was found about a week later at a motel rumored to be a hotbed for questionable activities, still in relatively good condition. The incident ended up involving four separate law enforcement jurisdictions in two different states, all of whom were very helpful and polite. I only wish they had waited a few hours to ring the doorbell.Edited for policy compliance.
