Noooo!My wife and I did exactly that 4 years ago (2011). We moved from the South Bay to North Jersey (Spoiler, we moved to Seattle in 2014). At the time we were thinking:- Cheaper cost of living/home ownership- More opportunity for someone with Valley experience- more access to family/help with kidsWe were wrong on all accounts.NJ taxes are more crippling (if possible) than California, Especially in Real Estate, where depending on the town, you can pay up to 20k PER YEAR on a very average 500k house.New Jersey is congested, dirty, economically depressed (NJ cities have extremely high rates of crime, poverty, violence, and most teeter on Detroit-level insolvency)You will have to commute to NYC for anything approaching the quality or challenge of the work you can find easily in the Valley. That generally means a 1-2 hour commute in trains that frequently have delays and multiple transfers.Traffic is pretty horrible at all times because the roads are shot, and the traffic patterns are bizarre (traffic circles, divided secondary roads, jug handles rather than left turns).EVERYTHING costs money. Tolls on every road, higher prices for food, entertainment, etc. There's nothing approaching the parks you've come to take for granted in California, or the natural beauty. You have to PAY to access a beach on the Jersey Shore. Everything in Jersey, with some exceptions, seemed broken down, worn out, dirty and crowded. People are cramped, irritable, and loud.There are some nice towns (we really loved Montclair) if you can afford to live there though. Ultimately, we decided that life in NJ wasn't anymore scalable than California, and there were significant drawbacks.Seattle has been a much better fit for us.

Honestly, I think its unlikely for a few reasons, some of which is related to qualifications, and others related to google.Relevant skills and experience:Google doesn’t only hire for engineering, but most people there have a technical background (college or not). If you have relevant engineering skills and you’re really good - there’s a shot. If not, or if your skills are 10-years rusty, then its a lot less rusty.That’s simply about the objective value of your skillset at Google.Age:The other part is biases and blind spots at Google and the broader tech industry. Age discrimination is a major problem in tech companies, but its particularly bad at a handful like Google, Facebook and a few others. There are a few implicit (and quietly explicit) reasons for this that I won’t get into, but Google, in particular, faced a lawsuit in California over their treatment of employees in multiple cases, who were all over 40.Culture:Google is highly selective on culture (to a fault IMO - a lot of their “diversity” issues are related to cultural bias and like hires like). Google like other top companies also biases on pedigree. Imagine you have three engineers going for a role at Google. One has a new master's degree from Carnegie Mellon, the other has a Bachelor's from MIT with a year or two of startup experience, and the third has five years of experience at Amazon but didn’t get a degree. Assuming all are a good culture fit, it's likely they will choose the new grad with the academic pedigree over the third candidate in many cases. No one gets questioned over a hire from MIT or CMU.Also, tech is intentionally youth-oriented, and that bias is re-enforced at multiple levels, from which startups get funded to who gets hired into an executive role at a big company. The assumption is that a younger candidate is more in touch with technical trends, thinks faster and will work harder than a more experienced candidate, because its partially true. An employee who is unmarried has no dependents and has limited engagements outside work will work more. I believe that experienced candidates will work smarter, and move the needle more because they’ve developed soft skills younger candidates haven’t developed yet, that’s informed by 15 years experience in big tech and building teams.Being smartI can’t speak for Google, but the attitude at Amazon at every level of hiring was not to hire on potential. Being smart isn’t enough, you need to demonstrate a track record for impact and relevant expertise. Amazon didn’t get to its scale by only hiring smart people, they got there by hiring driven people that align to their cultural values.MotivationsThe biggest question would be “why Google”? That’s a dangerous question, because if the answer is “lots of money” the conversation ends almost immediately. These companies hire people who want to work on problems at a massive scale, and want to learn from people who are better/smarter than they are. Being the smartest guy in the room is a very fast way to have a short career in many top tech companies.If those are your motivations, and you can find the right/most relevant role to your skills and experience, I hope my answer is completely wrong and I wish you all the best with your search.
