Can Kim Jong-Un travel to the United States?

In theory he could visit the United Nations headquarters in New York. The U.S. is bound by treaty to allow access to the United Nations but there are some important qualifications to that obligation:The federal, state or local authorities of the United States shall not impose any impediments to transit to or from the headquarters district of ... other persons invited to the headquarters district by the United Nations or by such specialized agency on official business. The appropriate American authorities shall afford any necessary protection to such persons while in transit to or from the headquarters district.Headquarters of the United NationsSo Kim Jong-Un would have to get an invite from the U.N. before his visit. He probably could cadge one but presumably it would have to be tied to UN business, a session of the Security Council or General Assembly, so he couldn't just drop in uninvited. And Kim Jong-Un wouldn't have the run of New York. The U.S. could restricted him to the UN headquarters district, meaning:(a) the premises bounded on the East by the westerly side of Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, on the West by the easterly side of First Avenue, on the North by the southerly side of East Forty-Eighth Street, and on the South by the northerly side of East Forty-Second Street, all as proposed to be widened, in the Borough of Manhattan, City and State of New York, and(b) an easement over Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive, above a lower limiting plane to be fixed for the construction and maintenance of an esplanade, together with the structures thereon and foundations and columns to support the same in locations below such limiting plane, the entire area to be more definitely defined by supplemental agreement between the United Nations and the United States of America.Kim Jong-Un could declare himself head of the North Korean mission to the United Nations, in addition to his other posts - 3rd Supreme Leader of North Korea, First Secretary of the Workers' Party of North Korea, Chairman of the National Defense Commission, Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army and Chairman of the Central Military Commission - and get out being restricted to the headquarters district: diplomats have wider travel rights through the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, but the United Nations would have to accept him as a diplomatic representative.Of course the U.S. could spoil Kim Jong-Un's day out by refusing him a visa. The U.S. has always claimed that security concerns could trump its treaty obligations under the UN Headquarters treaty and the Vienna Convention. The U.S. refused a visa to Yasser Arafat to address the General Assembly in 1988, thereby igniting a big diplomatic bunfight. The U.N. moved the General Assembly session to Geneva so Arafat could have his say.

How many accents are spoken in America?

Off the top of my head, I can think of all of these. There are the stereotypical versions, then the way most people actually speak. But the accents are real:Maine[1]Boston[2]“Boston Brahmin” (probably extinct now)[3]Vermont[4]New York City (NYC has at least 6 distinct accents, depending on the borough[5]: Manhattan, Brooklyn[6], Staten Island[7], Queens (North and South)[8]and the Bronx)North Jersey vs. South Jersey[9]Philadelphia. (Ask them to pronounce “water.” In Philly, it sounds more like “wooder.”)[10][11]Pittsburgh (“Yinzer.” Listen for the “dark l’s” that sound more like w’s.)[12][13]Pennsylvania “Dutch” — it’s a German dialect but full of English words. When they speak English, you can usually tell they’re Amish right away.[14]Baltimore/“Bawlmer”[15]Tangier Island/Eastern Shore/Chesapeake-speak, almost extinct.[16]The Outer Banks/Ocracoke brogue[17]Eastern North Carolina/Tidewater/Southside/Swampside Virginia (sometimes called the “Carolina growl”)Southern Appalachia[18]“Old Southern” — almost extinct, but you can hear it in the accent of Robert Penn Warren[19]Generic Deep South (Mississippi/Alabama/Georgia)[20]New Orleans/“Yat” (it sounds about half-Southern/half-Brooklynese)[21]Cajun French & Cajun English[22]Generic Texan[23]Lower MidwestCincinnati is said to have its own accent, though I can barely hear itDetroit (ditto)The Upper Peninsula of Michigan (“Yooper”)Milwaukee (pronounced “miw-waukee,” not “miL-waukee”)Generic Wisconsin[24]Chicago[25]Minnesotan (not the same as Wisconsin)Californian“Asian” Californian“Valley Girl”Generic “African American” accent“Latino” accentI’ve never lived or traveled much out West, so I’m not so sure about the accents out there. But there must be subtle differences in the West, too. There are also old accents like the “transatlantic” English you hear in old movies and in the way Franklin Roosevelt or George Plimpton[26] talked. These are just about completely dead now. I actually don’t think I’ve ever heard a living person speak like that.Footnotes[1] Bob Marley on Long Wintahs in Maine[2] Class helps locals lose their Boston accent[3] Boston Brahmin[4] ovenbird by Robert Frost[5] The accents of the 5 boroughs of NYC -- a how to by a native -- the real deal![6] How to Do a Brooklyn Accent | Accent Training[7] How To Do A Staten Island Accent[8] Archie Bunker - Subway Farts[9] The reality of New Jersey accents and dialect boundaries[10] Can You Beat Bradley Cooper at the Translate Philly Quiz?[11] If Titanic had a Philly Accent -TIE-TAN-ICK[12] PITTSBURGH DAD AT GIANT EAGLE[13] How to Do a Pittsburgh Accent | Accent Training[14] We Still Speak the Mother Tongue - Conversations with the Amish (2015)[15] Crabs Comedy 103JohnGoodspeedXmas[16] The odd accent of Tangier VA - American Tongues episode #3[17] The Disappearing American Dialect of North Carolina[18] Appalachian Mountain Talk[19] Clearly About You[20] Shelby Foote on Union Victory[21] A variety of New Orleans accents from YEAH YOU RITE![22] WIKITONGUES: Louis speaking Louisiana French & English[23] No Country for Old Men (6/11) Movie CLIP - His Name's Chigurh (2007) HD[24] Wisconsin Accent (funny)[25] Chicago / midwest dialect[26] George Plimpton for Mattel Intellivision
