Taiwan is a very nice place, full of friendly people, good bookstores (Eslite), good restaurants, good cafes and lots of other stuff. I was teaching in a university (that explains why I sometimes sound like an academic), and I was also working in advertising.It was good work, I was happy, but I was also bored.This was because this thing called the Internet came along, and I was really hooked on it. I thought that I was made for it, and it for me. The possibilities seemed endless.The problem was that Taiwan was too small; all the action was happening in Silicon Valley. I didn’t want to miss out on all the action.When I got to Silicon Valley, I worked with a company called Sinanet, which later merged with a Beijing company called SRS, forming Sina, which is now the largest online news media company in China, with 670M subscribers. When they found out that I knew Chinese, they sent me to Beijing and Taipei because the founders had dreams of building an online Chinese community which extended across national borders. (That’s a dream which never dies.) When I was in China, there were 500k Internet users.Then I went to another company which partnered with Xinhua News Agency, which at the time was the official organ of the Chinese Communist Party. In this position, I learned something about how the party thinks and works. It was interesting work, but also stressful because I had to balance China, Taiwan and Hong Kong interests, and had to get production and programming teams together to implement policies. My main effort was on getting the three portals to use the same ad format so that major advertisers could use the same ad specs, making it easy for them to buy and place their campaigns. I had some success, but politics got in the way. (Not all of the political issues were from China; Taiwan and Hong Kong also contributed.)The opportunity I see now is that Chinese are affluent, but non-Chinese really don’t know what Chinese want (I can tell from the questions on Quora), and what they can offer. Instead of selling products, they need to think about experiences[1], because that is what Chinese traveling outside China are most interested in now. Moreover, Chinese spend US$300B outside China annually. Instead of thinking only about selling products to Chinese (which are usually made in China anyway), many smaller businesses and services need to think about how to position themselves as offering an attractive living, learning or fun experience to Chinese travelers. Today’s Chinese travelers live in their mobile apps (WeChat, Douyin, Sina Weibo, etc.), and if they enjoy an experience, they want to share it, and maybe show-off a little, to their mobile circle of friends. If a non-Chinese destination can do this, then it is the best word-of-mouth advertising imaginable; you just can’t beat it. There actually is an advantage to being small because then they can position themselves as a unique undiscovered gem to Chinese. Chinese society is intensely competitive, and everyone wants to show that they know about something different which others don’t know about yet. This pressure is especially strong for KOLs (key opinions leaders) on the Internet, who have to constantly feed new trends and information to their followers.For this reason, and because I saw this trend and opportunity, I set up my own direct-to-Chinese-consumer mobile ad agency ChinaBridge Marketing[2] to help smaller companies establish relationships with Chinese consumers by building a presence on the leading Chinese mobile apps.I think it will be a fun ride.Footnotes[1] How WeChat is changing China’s travel bug[2] What We Do

I’ll just go through the Commando groups as of today’s date (09/05/2019) as standing and lead role does rotate:3 Commando Brigade is made up by 40 Commando, 42 Commando, 43 Commando, 45 Commando, 30 Commando, 29 Commando, 24 Commando and Commando Helicopter Force (CHF).40 Commando- is a battalion sized unit currently working as Standing Tasks Commando Group. This requires them to provide a variety of tasks including providing ships’ force protection teams for Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels deployed around the globe, contributing to UK domestic resilience, and supplying training teams to help develop foreign Armed Forces.(40 Commando training in Oman)42 Commando- is a battalion sized unit that has taken over some amphibious operations from 43 Commando. 42 Commando deliver a combination of capabilities including: high threat capacity-building and training of overseas partnered forces, Ships Force Protection Teams, training to indigenous forces, maritime interdiction and boarding operations, UK resilience and support to the Queen Elizabeth Class Carriers.(42 Commando training alongside US MARSOC Marines on ship boarding operations)43 Commando- is a 550 man strong unit that make up the UK’s fleet protection group who’s main role is to defend the UK’s nuclear deterrent. Additionally, maritime boarding and sniper teams and the very high readiness Fleet Contingent Troop are deployed world wide to conduct specialist maritime security tasks in support of the Royal Navy.Royal Marine teams from 43 Commando are currently deployed on counter-piracy, counter-narcotics, and maritime interdiction operations in the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean. There is also a detachment of cold weather warfare trained Royal Marines from the Unit deployed on the Royal Navy’s Ice Patrol Ships.(43 Commando on exercise looking all kitted out)45 Commando- is a battalion sized unit that has recently taken over the mantle from 40 Commando as Lead Commando Group. This means that they are on constant high readiness to be able to deploy within a couple of days to any crisis around the world.(45 Commando on Exercise Green Dagger)30 Commando IX (Information Exploitation) Group- this unit is designed to achieve information superiority within assigned battlespace by all available means, and contribute to component and joint information activity in order to enable 3 Commando Brigade operations. It is made up by 4 squadrons:Surveillance and Reconnaissance Squadron (SR Sqn) personnel comprise the bulk of the Brigade Reconnaissance Force. This highly trained unit is made up of reconnaissance specialists tasked with operating ahead of the main brigade force.Y Squadron comprises electronic warfare specialists, able to gain intelligence on the enemy and increase situational awareness by intercepting enemy communications systemsCommunications Squadron operates and maintains the wide variety of communications systems and media available to the Commander, and provides personnel to set up and run the Brigade Headquarters when deployed.Logistics Squadron role is to move, sustain and protect the Brigade and 30 Commando Headquarters.30 Commando ensures that the Brigade Commander has superior situational awareness, allowing him to make quicker, more accurate decisions and to target his adversary's key capabilities.(30 Commando [SRS] carrying out low level parachuting from a C130 during Exercise Baltic Protector)29 Commando Regiment- are made up by Commando Gunners from the Royal Artillery Corps. They are equipped with 105mm Light Guns and also have Fire Support Teams (FSTs) trained to coordinate their firepower. The FSTs also coordinates other indirect fire support assets such as mortars, fast jets, attack helicopters and the guns from Royal Naval ships. The batteries operate around the world on ship alongside the Royal Marines.(29 Commando FST carrying out a stealth insertion from the sea to co-ordinate artillery and air strikes and record enemy opposition)24 Commando Engineers- is responsible for all engineering tasks in the Brigade forward area. This includes route maintenance, bridging, water supply, electricity supply construction of field defences and structures, demolition tasks and mine clearance. As well as possessing a large number of skilled craftsmen, the Regiment also has a variety of plant machinery and other equipment. This gives the Unit the capability to tackle almost any form of construction or demolition.Additionally, the Regiment also has a diving team, trained to conduct sub-surface engineering tasks.(24 Commando satisfying their appetite for destruction)Commando Helicopter Force- is comprised of 3 squadrons:845 Naval Air Squadron is the front line Commando Merlin Squadron, currently converting from the Merlin HC3 and HC3A to the new Commando Merlin HC4, optimised for both maritime and land operations and is preparing to deploy on HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales.846 Naval Air Squadron is a Commando Merlin Squadron whose main purposes are: the Operation Conversion Flight training Aircrew and Engineers for the front line, the Maritime Counter Terrorism (MCT) and Maritime Aviation Group [MAG].
