Maybe so back before the 90’s.My first sworn position was as a Deputy in Volusia County, Florida. That’s where Daytona Beach is. Daytona Beach Police Department had a squad of officers who rode around and “hunted” FOP and PBA tags for DUI and traffic violations. Their rationale was that Daytona Beach was a magnet for DUI drivers. The fact that you wore a badge wasn’t going to buy you any leniency. That was 25 years ago.Even today, if the spouse or child of an officer gets stopped for speeding, chances are they are still going to get a ticket. The current mindset is this “your LEO goes out every day to enforce the law, but here you are breaking it….. and now you want some “professional courtesy” because your husband is a cop…. well, YOU didn’t do anything to earn that badge so YOU don’t deserve anything”

It entirely depends on the jurisdiction involved.Some prohibit the maneuver totally, while others have special exemptions that must be approved by higher authority.It even depends on the department.Our local police, Daytona Beach PD, are not trained on this, and subsequently prevented from using it.Volusia County will use it in limited circumstances.Meanwhile, Florida Highway Patrol have reinforced bumpers to perform the maneuver to prevent a reckless driver from becoming a safety hazard to other drivers on the highway.This is just for the 3 jurisdictions I live in, I don't know other cities or municipalities rules, you can always ask the public relations division, they might tell you.

In Florida officers are not allowed to contract with other entities for off duty work. This is a good thing as it helps reduce conflicts of interest. The state certainly does not want any officer to be working security for a criminal or suspected criminal or a company which is in the criminal's interest. It is a good system of checks and balances so the officer does not get into a bind.The entity would send a request to the jurisdiction involved and would pay the city, county or state whatever their rates are for outside work and then the department will pay the officer for the hours worked.Florida Highway Patrol Troopers can work overtime anywhere in the state if requested by a business. Normally, unless asked directly by a business Troopers perform outside work for other jurisdictions when the jurisdiction runs out of officers for overtime.One example is Daytona Beach at spring break and bike week. Nearly every hotel has an off duty officer working at night during these times. A lot of bars do too. Daytona Beach never has enough officers to cover their regular shifts and outside work so during these times you will see DB police, deputy sheriffs and highway patrol working overtime.Off duty work normally pays higher than the regular hourly rate that the officer makes.Now, if the overtime is part of a governmental function such as a parade, etc. the officer would be paid his regular rate.
