Find a permanent place to live for the sake of getting an address. The difficulty of finding a place within your budget varies from place to place in Germany. You should do more active search if you are going to be employed in major cities to find a suitable place to live. There is a untold law that each adult require 12 meter square living space. I would suggest an apartment with 35 meter square or higher will be just fine for a couple. Also please include your wive’s name in the rental contract to avoid any problems later.Step 2. Do the address registration (Anmeldung) - You have to get an appointment at the “burgerampt” (Spelling is in German, but it is almost same) and go there with the below listed documents/formsAddress registration form (You can get it online)your passport & visa (visa will be stamped in passport for most countries)rental contractform from landlord (You can ask for this form as well along with the rental contract)Marriage certificateBirth certificate of kids (only if you have kidsYou will get this document immediately from the official. The paper you receive from there is going to serve as your address proof as long as you stay at that address.This is to be done again when you change your address in Germany ay time. If you have done it once, you do not need all above documents. You previous address registration document, new rental contract, passport and form from landlord will do from the second time onwards.You will later receive your Tax number by mail after doing address registration. This is an automatic process and do not require any other application. The tax number is unique for a person and it will be valid as long as you live in Germany.IMPORTANT: The address registration paper is a very important document. Do not treat it as just a piece of another paper. Keep this safe and secure. This is going to be your proof of address in Germany.Step 3. Get the statutory health insurance - Germany want every civilian to have their health insurance. It is mandatory to have this health insurance document before going to apply for the long term work permit. You can get either TK or AOK health insurance which are really popular in Germany. You can send a mail to any of these and they will send you the form and required documents. If I am correct, the following documents/forms are required to apply for the health insurance.Application formAddress registration document copyjob contract (Not sure whether this is required)A form with your photo pasted (Most probably this has to be sent by post)Couple of passport size recent photosThis might take 1 - 2 days. You can request a letter from the insurance company by Email for doing the residence permit application. If you get this in English, do ask them to send it in German.Step 4. Applying for residence permit at immigration office (Auslanderbehorde) - The first visa you get from the German consulate will only have a validity of 3 months/6 months (depending on the country). You have to get the residence permit to stay in Germany for more than that period. When you get the address registration document and insurance welcome letter with some insurance number, you are all set to go for the residence permit. You have to get an appointment at the “Auslanderbehorde” (Spelling is very close) to submit your application. It is really difficult to get an appointment in Auslanderbehorde of some cities. if the appointment is not available within 30 days, my advice is to schedule the appointment immediately after you land in Germany (Yes, Before starting all previous procedures). Following documents are required before going for the appointmentBlue card application formPassport & visaLetter from Insurance company (preferably in German)Address registration documentJob contractMarriage certificateBirth certificates of your kidsCertificates from universityResumeRecent passport size photograph (It should be really recent photograph)This is the most time consuming process. This will take roughly 3 to 4 weeks. So, Please do this as immediately as possible(within the first month of arriving in Germany, if you have only 3 months visa).IMPORTANT: If you are not able to get previous documents in time, please cancel the appointment well before (I mean before 1 - 2 days at-least) so that you are not wasting the appointment time.Procedure for WifeShe can start the visa application with the German consulate along with your application or before you get the residence permit in Germany. But, many of my friends and acquaintances told me that things are a lot more faster when the life partner has the residence permit and address already in Germany. In some case, both husband and wife got the visa at the same time from German consulate after applying together, even though only 1 of them is getting employed. It all depends on your luck.Once your wife lands in Germany, She has to do the exact same things mentioned from step 2 to 4. But, she do not have to produce job contract if she is coming here on family reunion.You can link her to your insurance without any additional cost as long as she is not working in Germany.
