Physical development for preschoolers is just as important as other domains of learning, We refer to these areas of development as PIES: physical, intellectual, emotional and social development. Each are equally important and each supports the other areas of learning.

Around here (Chicago) these are the rules:Kissing? No. Never. Not in any form.Hugging? Preschool and kindergarten teachers are allowed to hug their students. That’s it. No hugging beyond that.I can high-five and fist-bump my students. Even that is too much physical contact for my comfort.

About the time my daughter was 3 or so, there was a fad among pediatricians about children being “short for their age”. My daughter was always petite, even from the time she was born, although at 6 lbs. 15 ounces she was the biggest of my babies. I had taken her in for a regular appointment (preschool physical) and the pediatrician pointed out that on the growth chart she was only in the 10th percentile in height and the 20th percentile in weight, which was much too small for an average 3 year old. I wanted to laugh but didn’t. Instead, I drew myself up to my full 5′3, looked down at the 5′1 pediatrician, and said, “Dr. B, I’m the tallest woman in my family and her dad is 5′8. If you’re looking for basketball players, you’re barking up the wrong family tree!” Nothing more was ever said about the height of any of my kids. My daughter finally came in at just under 5′2.My second son had a major problem with a pediatrician when his son was about 2 and had been hospitalized with a sinus infection because antibiotics “hadn’t worked.” I knew that most sinus infections are viral and I was wondering a little bit why he was even in the hospital other than maybe being a little dehydrated. The doc wanted to run a lot of expensive tests and put him on a different (and expensive) set of IV antibiotics as well as do an MRI of his sinuses….yet she had not done a strep screen or a culture and sensitivity. I told my son to ask about the antibiotics and side effects, and also if she was going to do the C&S and strep screen first and if not, why not. When she came in the next morning, he peppered her with questions and she got very defensive and finally said, “Are you a medical person?” He said, “No, but my mom’s a nurse and she told me what to ask.” She got mad and stormed out of the room, but she did order a strep screen. It was negative (as I expected) and my grandson was discharged home as soon as the results came in later that same day. All the other tests and the IV antibiotics were canceled.
