As a C# and JS developer, why should or shouldn't I use Go? What does it offer differently?

I am a C# developer and use it for web development, GUI applications, mobile applications, console applications, basic services and more. The C# language is nearly 20 years old now and has gone through a lot of improvements and has a lot of powerful features, combined with the many frameworks that are available for C#.So, what does Go have? Check out The Go Programming Language and you will see it’s still version 1.x and not yet 8 years old. It lacks maturity and while it does have a lot of packages, it still lacks a good IDE and other tools to speed up development. (Development started in 2007 but the first version was published in 2012, thus 8 years…)One of the problems with Go is shown in how they use databases. In func (*DB) QueryRowContext you will notice that Go still uses raw SQL queries to collect data. The Multiple Results Sets example shows how challenging it can become to write more complex queries in Go.With C#, I would use the Entity Framework combined with LINQ and would have a more effective way to design queries within code, including the IDE helping me with syntax highlighting and Code Completion. And this is where a framework will help you avoid having to work with raw SQL.But my main problem with Go is that it has been developed with UNIX in mind. Which is fine. It’s also meant to be similar to C, which is very clear when you see Go code. Go is not (fully) an object oriented programming language, which means that certain common design patterns won’t be useful for Go. And Go was never meant to handle complex, large tasks as it’s a lightweight programming language.Well, the OO claim isn’t fully true, as OO in Go is different from other OO languages. There’s no inheritance in Go, thus no polymorphism. But those features can be extremely useful in programming! But there’s more possible in C# that makes it more powerful. I use a lot of generics in my code. As for Go, go read Why Generics? - The Go Blog. It has been suggested to be added to Go, so it’s still missing a powerful feature.Another issue with Go is described in Error handling and Go. And in Defer, Panic, and Recover. The C# language has a nice way to handle exceptions and errors, allowing developers to build robust applications. In Go, this is a serious problem as you will rely on the build-in error type, regularly checking for errors even where you don’t expect one.Another powerful feature of C# is the yield - C# Reference command. This is generally used while making enumerations. The yield keyword will return a value before it calculates the next value. This is extremely useful to display results faster while processing data, as you can immediately display a value before the system gets the next one from the enumeration. Now, you can do this fine within a loop inside your code, but the yield command will yield the value to the next method in a chain of methods. This next method will iterate through the data generated by the previous method, one by one. And this is a major strength C# uses with LINQ, as the Select() command in LINQ will iterate items one by one and only for as long as the next method needs data. So if you use DataSource.Select(s=>s.Something).Take(5) then the Select() gets executed just 5 times, even if the datasource has a gazillion items. These are called coroutines in some other programming languages. Go doesn’t have coroutines although they do have something they call “goroutines”. With a “G”. The difference is that this makes goroutines similar to asynchronous functions in C#, not to coroutines. And the C# language has a rich framework for parallel execution of code with asynchronous functions and excellent multithreading support. Go is limited in this regard. (Even the ANSI C standard now has multithreading support!)But should you use Go? Or not? Well, if you are a C# or JS developer then it won’t hurt knowing Go. The syntax is not much different and the keywords are very similar. Some things take a little time to get used to but when you’re working on UNIX then Go would be a good alternative for simpler applications.Every programming language is useful for something and it all depends on what you need to build. If you want to build a sand castle then sand is fine. If you want to rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral then you will need something a lot better.Go is lightweight. It doesn’t have generic types, no exceptions, no assertions, no concurrency, no type inheritance, no method overloading, no operator overloading, no variant types, no generics, no ?: operator and a lot more. And all of it is by design! There’s a reason for this, as Go is not meant to compete with languages like JavaScript or C#. The Go language is meant as a lightweight solution among a world of heavyweights. It is a good thing to understand Go and be able to use it, whenever you need it. But if you’ll ever need Go?I don’t know. What are you trying to build?
