PDF Editor FAQ

What is life like as an audit senior at a big 4?

Hectic but at the same time very challenging and exciting. As an Audit Senior you are a team leader for audit assignment, this unique opportunity teaches you team and time management. It also makes you a solution provider and hones your mentoring and communication skills.

When and why did the British Royal Navy stop issuing a rum ration, when their ships are still 'wet', even today?

For senior rates after the tot was abolished, an equal allowance of three measures of spirits per day was introduced. The tot was not obligatory, but had to be drunk if taken. Hording it was not allowed. There was also a complex payment system of sharing your ration in “sippers” or “gulpers” depending on the favour you were paying for.As an officer I had to audit senior rates bar books to ensure that individuals were not abusing the allowance. One common trick was to sign for your three measures over a few days, but not drink them. Then on the weekend you could have several shots more than your allowance to balance the books. The occasional bar stock muster would reveal that there was more stock than there should be. This could result in the bar being closed for everyone for several days.Officers were trusted to behave properly and not abuse the system. The Captain did, however, inspect the wardroom bar books on random occasions to see if anyone was in fact drinking too much.On more than one occasion, as Casing Officer off loading torpedoes in Faslane in winter blizzards, the TWEO and myself would buy a bottle of rum to split between the torpedo loading party and ourselves to get some feeling back into our hands and feet. The tradition then was to throw the cork overboard to show that no one left till the bottle was empty.I also “issued” rum rations to divers in Faslane when they did a propeller change on the submarine whilst it was still in the water. It took many hours and the divers were fully entitled to a rum ration after spending more than a specific time in cold water. All carefully laid out in BR5 the Catering Regulations which the divers (MCDs) knew off by heart. This was many years after the tot was abolished.

What's the most interesting thing that happened during your articleship period while pursuing CA?

This one will be not a funny one rather a humane learning that I wanted to share here. All ways listen to your Audit seniors. Our office was based out in Chennai and we had to travel for an audit to Makshi a economic zone near by Indore, that was my first outstation audit and its was just a week after I joined the office.Everyone knows that we Articles claim food and travel bills in office. I was accompanied by Two seniors, one from Orrisa and other from Andhra. This instance, we were traveling by car from Indore to Bhopal to catch the train back to Chennai. It was a 3hr travel in the night, we had our train scheduled at 7am in the morning, we actually started late in the night and had to rush to Bhopal to catch the train, Seniors have been to this audit regularly from time to time, they knew that the driver has been working as a truck driver for the company all day and occasionally drove the company car if need be, that day he had worked all day tripping around the inventory in factory, since we had to rush to Bhopal he was called in the 11th hour and he did drive us to the station before the schedule. As we were nearing the station area, the driver asked us if we were hungry, actually the previous night since we were to leave there was a special dinner arranged for us and we had our stomach full, Senior replied, “bhaiya stop near any Restaurant we will have something, train food will not be that nice”.I looked at him shockingly and replied in a lighter sense “ We had a heavy dinner last night, you had more than two of us, we should go to the train.”We had around 25–45 min for the train to depart, by the time we could come to a conclusion the station arrived and we had to board the train. We took our berths, while one of the senior walked up to me and asked to sit down and said “ See, I understand we had a good dinner last night, but you did not know that the driver did not have his dinner, we called him while he was finishing his night shift and was about to go for his dinner, and not only that driver’s in these areas don’t get to eat at Restaurants you normally go for in your daily routine, its like a one time offer for them and now he has to go back empty stomach to the factory, and FYI we have been taking him for breakfast every time he drives us around and that why he asked me, you have not only allowed me to speak as a senior but also denied a good food for that man, keep this in mind because next time you might have to come to this audit, since we are leaving office. Sleep well.”Never ever I had felt that bad in my life, little did I know back then that we are bound to interact with people from all kinds of life and not that every time we will walk into CEO, CFO, Managers, there are others too.To top it all, we really had a bad breakfast in the Train which upset all our stomachs and I had to face more heat from the seniors for that too. I had to react like, We were anyway going to claim the food bills in our office, there would have been no harm in getting him a breakfast, what have I done. So, Seniors are right in their own way, we just have to reason with them.
