PDF Editor FAQ

What is the creepiest experience of an embalmer?

I was working on embalming a sweet Lil old lady while I was in North West Ohio. I had shaved her face, raised her vessles, set her features, and begun to inject my normal mix of fluid. While I was working the rigor out of her right hand, watching the drainage, making sure everything was going smoothly, I noticed her left thumb was making a slight, but obvious twitch or contraction, in towards her palm, as if she were trying to grab something.I called for the other funeral directors/embalmers to come in so someone else could verify what I was seeing. they popped their heads in and verified what I was seeing. None of them had experienced something like this before.I wanted to feel how strong the twitch was so I felt her hand and I felt her kind of grab mine. I was pretty excited that she was twitching but I realize it is likely a chemical reaction causing it. The twitch was rhythmic, and consistent but not very strong. She also stopped within about 4 minutes of when I had noticed it start. For those that are wondering if she could possibly be alive, no. This lady was dead. If someone is swabbing our your nose, eyes, and mouth with cotton and dis-spray, then cutting into your shoulder/neck and digging up your vessels, you would have reacted before the formaldehyde solution hit you.I've also had a few guys become semi erect, and one come to full attention. The halfies usually happen when the vascular pressure is too high in that region due to poor drainage, a block, or some other obstruction causing extra fluid to force the erection. I'm not sure what made the guy become fully erect unless he may have been when he died, it subsided, then the increased vascular pressure revived it, so to speak…or, I was just that good….of an embalmer. Will I still need a bachelor's degree if I only want to be an embalmer and not a funeral director in Ohio?

I had both an embalmer’s license and a funeral director’s license in Ohio, but that was more than 10 years ago. I would suggest you contact the Ohio Board of Funeral Directors and Emablamers for the current qualifications.

I am 17 and still in high school. How can I become a funeral director/embalmer once I get out of high school?

No, my husband had just graduated from a mortuary school in Cleveland when I met him. It was a two year course way back in 1948. Today the requirements are much more stringent. Today, Ohio is a state that requires not only four year college degree plus two years of mortuary training.
