I know Americans would not take the jobs currently done by undocumented immigrants and/or seasonal workers from Mexico or other countries.North Carolina need farmhands for the growing season. As required by law, the job was posted and citizens who applied would take priority in hiring. In fact, 97% of citizens who applied was accepted for the job. Except, never more than 300 people applied since they start tracking these numbers. The highest number of applicants was 268.In 2011, 245 people [American citizens] were hired out of 268 referred, but only 163 (66.5 percent) of the hired applicants actually showed up to the first day of work. Worse, only seven lasted until the end of the growing season.For perspective, the NCGA was looking for about 6,500 workers in 2011. Even if every single referred applicant had been hired and finished the growing season, that would have filled only 4.1 percent of the slots available. As a consequence, the vast majority of the workers who start work at NCGA farms are Mexican H-2A visa holders.And Mexican workers are far likelier to stick through the season than native-born workers. It is infuriating because those people who scream the loudest won’t survive without immigrants!You aren’t willing to sweat in the field, you think cleaning hotel room is below you, you can’t code, you think God created earth 6000 years ago, now tell me, if you kick immigrants out of the country, which job we currently do, farmworkers, hotel maids, gardeners, cleaning staff, sweatshop seamstresses, restaurant staff, programmers, medical doctors, neuroscientists… which one of these jobs you’re willing or qualified to do?Immigrants build this fucking country. Unless you’re a member of the first nation (no, your fake 1/16 Cherokee blood from your non-existing great great great grandmother the Cherokee princess doesn’t count!), you’re a descendant of immigrants. The Majority Already WorkThe entire “people on welfare are lazy moochers” is a sinister lie spread by conservative right-wing media to cut spending, privatize everything, so the top 1% could get more money.Getting rid of social welfare will not push US citizens to this high labor-intensitive and low paying jobs currently being handled by immigrants.First of all, these jobs do not pay living wages. (Not in the way that a normal human being with dignity should be living.) Many Americans who are on welfare are already working. In fact, SNAP requires people to find jobs and work at least 20 hours a week or they lose their benefit. People just don’t make enough money to support themselves and their families.Cutting social welfare will not drive people to work as farmhands. Cutting social welfare means more hungry children.

It's insane. I'm guessing someone in our government thinks delivering boxes of food will be cheaper than electronically loading money to a card.Let's see. We already have a system in place that manages food stamps. The up charge for next year will be $0.00.In order for the box-o-groceries to work, our government will need to:Manage, contract, create a system to:purchase food for the poor, warehouse food, pay for the delivery of and refrigerate food for the poor.deliver heavy boxes of food across the country daily for items that that may spoil and/or require refrigeration. Refrigerated items may or may not be delivered with food that may spoil.Purchase or arrange refrigeration for homeless individuals for perishable items.Homeless people will need to contact a yet to be created office to report any and all movements to assure their food is delivered.The government will need to create and maintain a medical database to assure those with gluten, peanut, or other food allergies don't receive items that contain these items.I don't think the government has enough money to build a wall and create a system for food delivery.

The white poor in the U.S. During the plantation system the poor whites were content to believe themselves “better” than blacks, and there was the tiny chance they could become large plantation owners themselves. In reality it almost never happened.There was enormous fear and paranoia among slave owners that the slaves would revolt. It became a gun culture for this reason. Racism was perpetuated by the bourgeoisie, and these attitudes shaped the reality of Southern racism. Life was so bad for blacks after the end of the slave system that some preferred to move to the Soviet Union and live under Stalin during the the Great Purges. Another black U.S. soldier was made a POW during the Korean War and sent to Red China. After he was released when the war ended he chose to stay in Red China and build a family instead of returning to U.S. racism. His story was fascinating.Poor U.S. whites are solidly conservative in the U.S., voting for Republican policies to end Social Security, Medicare, and food stamps. Ironically, these same red states are the primary recipients of welfare and food stamps. They embrace patriotism and the flag because it gives them a sense of strength. If they are like the U.S., then they are strong and dominant, but in reality they are facing the worst of the effects of the Neoliberal capitalist system which has been embraced by both parties. No surprise they endorse Trump, because at least he claims to be trying to bring back manufacturing and reduce globalism. In that sense their support is rational. The greater truth is that they are strong proponents of capitalism, and capitalism has utterly failed them. Those who owned slaves and did farming work lived their lives in the country. Compare this to the large numbers of Catholics that came from Europe during the Irish Potato Famine, from Eastern Europe, and Italy. They moved to the cities in the North to work in factories. Labor unions took hold. Democrats used to have a strong base in labor unions, cities, and in the black community.The Republican Party is primarily a white person party. Small business owners, the very rich, men, and the South are solid red state voters. Since there are only two major parties the other half has coalesced into the Democratic Party because there is nowhere else to go because American elections are “winner takes all” models. Black people, women, younger people, college educated people, LGBTQ+, and progressives make up the bulk of the Democratic Party.Southerners tend to be Southern Baptists, evangelicals and fundamentalists. These groups are socially conservative and economically conservative.There are a fair number of low information voters in the Republican Party as well. These people tend to be poor, uneducated, and need food stamps and Medicaid to survive. But ironically they are the first to vote for Republicans, who routinely cut these programs. Why? This matter was studied and the results were not surprising—these voters are willing to hurt themselves so long as “blacks and undeserving whites” don’t get the benefits. It is racism and hate. This became much worse during the Obama Presidency, because many poor whites were very upset that a black man was in the White House. Many Southerners were raised with parents who were authoritarian in their parenting styles. These parents demand blind obedience, submission to authority, “Because I said so,” high standards and discipline for failing to meet those standards, “Everybody has their place,” conformity, and highlighting the role of authority figures that are to be respected and followed, not questioned. Trump had tremendous appeal to authoritarian voters.
