What happened in regards to the shooting at the Boulder, Colorado supermarket?

This answer may contain sensitive images. Click on an image to unblur it.Let us start with the shooter. Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is a twenty-one year old non-political mentally-ill man who lived before the shooting in Arvada, Colorado. His background includes severe bullying as a child in school, and then later he was noted for his personal anger and that he became a bully. The picture shown above is a more typically image of him his friends recognized, another circulating image was apparently chosen for more sinister reasons to be circulated in some media.Alissa was noted for many active threats of violence, and finally, a 2018 juvenile conviction for assault, a misdemeanor. Numerous mental illness interventions are noted by various sources, but his friends and acquaintances so far have just described him angry, and that he would react violently when his name was made fun of.Ruger® AR-556® Pistol Centerfire Pistol ModelsModel: 8570 Type: Pistol Caliber: 5.56 NATO Capacity: 30 Barrel Length: 10.50" 26.6 cm MSRP: $899.00 Model: 8571 Type: Pistol Caliber: 350 Legend Capacity: 5 Barrel Length: 9.50" 24.1 cm MSRP: $949.00 Model: 8572 Type: Pistol Caliber: 300 BLK Capacity: 30 Barrel Length: 10.50" 26.6 cm MSRP: $949.00 Model: 8573 Type: Pistol Caliber: 5.56 NATO Capacity: 30 Barrel Length: 10.50" 26.6 cm MSRP: $949.00 Lower receiver is fitted with an adjustable SB Tactical® SBA3® Pistol Stabilizing Brace® to aid in accuracy, balance and recoil management. See individual spec sheets for model specific features.https://ruger.com/products/ar556Pistol/models.htmlOn or around 17 March, 2021 Alissa purchased an AC556 pistol from an undisclosed location, paying between 800 and 900 dollars for it according to friends, and acquired several cases of ammunition, a hand guard which he used as a rear stock, and a set of magazines. On Mar. 22, 2021 at around 2.30 P.M. Alissa proceeded to the Boulder, Colorado supermarket King Soopers at 3600 Table Mesa Dr. According to documents produced by Boulder PD he arrived in a car and pulled the rifle he had inside out and started firing immediately. He shot out windows in the supermarket, fired on empty vehicles, and then turned his attention to an elderly man who is not identified by name, wounding him, then approaching him and empty the “contents of his magazine” into the man’s body. Reloading he then entered the supermarket.Almost immediately upon entering the store manager of the supermarket (not identified yet) raced to an intercom system and announced an active shooter, and for people to find shelter. Employees apparently began to seek cover where ever they could find it.An active shooter warning was called out and the first responding officer was 51-year old Boulder Police Department officer Eric Talley. Using his WT he reported that a shooter with a “patrol rifle” (a good description since the Boulder PD uses the AR models as its patrol rifle and for political reasons the use of terms such as assault rifle are banned) was actively engaging customers in the store, and was probably himself already in the story and preparing to engage the suspect when these last words were recorded.Using what is described as his issue sidearm (unverified) Taley, leading several other officers, engaged Alissa in a firefight and lost his life when he received a gunshot wound to his head, but in his efforts he reportedly struck Allissa at least once with a non-fatal wound to the leg.As a note, Boulder PD along with many Colorado and national departments do not have a policy of “wait for SWAT” but instead are instructed to, as soon as an active shooter is discovered, to take up a position from which the shooter can be engaged if they move through the officer’s control point. If following procedure Talley, who obviously entered the space and may not have known what he was facing, and who identified either from witness testimony or personal view the active shooter and the weapon in use, would have strong pointed a position and opened fire if the suspect presented himself. Despite being policy, it is a brave thing to tackle a man with a “patrol rifle” when you have a Glock and your body armor is designed for street use and does not likely have heavy plates in it, nor do you have a helmet.During his time in the store Alissa apparently methodically engages customers and staff, killing Denny Stong, 20; Neven Stanisic, 23; Rikki Olds, 25; Tralona Bartkowiak, 49; Suzanne Fountain, 59; Teri Leiker, 51; Kevin Mahoney, 61; Lynn Murray, 62; and Jodi Waters, 65. There are no reports of any wounded customers or staff, and given his actions outside it is likely he would shoot and then execute each of his victims.Denny Strong was a history buff and loved model airplanes.Neven Strong was noted as very religious and active in his community.Rikki Olds is a store employee and was possibly the person who first warned of the active shooter.Tralona Bartkowiak owned a store Umba Love, a clothing store.UMBA LOVE | FESTIVAL CLOTHING & ART | BOULDER, COFestival & Burning Man clothes for all occasions, ages and styles! Can I enter the Hopi Reservation in Arizona?

Of course. I have been there many, many times. Most ceremonies are closed now because of offensive, rude, and disrespectful behavior of the part of “Anglos” (what non Native people of all sorts are called in this part of the world). The best way to find out about attending dances is to contact the Hopi Cultural Preservation office. These are mostly religious ceremonies not entertainment for outsiders. Act as one might in a church in a foreign country. However, the Hopi welcome tourists and visitors. It is a source of income and pride on the part of many Hopi. While some Katsina dances are open to the public, photography, sketching and recording of religious ceremonies are not allowed. Alcohol is prohibited on the Hopi Reservation. It is not sold in any restaurant or store within the Hopi Reservation and individuals are prohibited from transporting it onto the reservation. That means you too. It against the law on the surrounding Navajo Nation as well. Do not take anything from the Hopi lands, and leaving nothing behind. The homes are NOT museums. They are people’s real homes even if they are old. Do not enter any home or structure without permission. The main highways are open to all. Off-road travel, including jeeps, motorcycles and 4-wheel drive vehicles, is prohibited without a guide.Hopituh Shi-nu-mu is the Hopi name for the tribe. It means roughly, the righteous, behaving ones, ones who are mannered, civilized, peaceable, polite, and who adhere to the Hopi Way. All others are not-Hopi (Ka-Hopi- improper). There are 19,338 Hopi tribal members. Hopi and Tewa is still spoken there. Hopílavayi) is a Uto-Aztecan language. It is not even a little bit related to Navajo or Zuni or Tewa. Traditional beliefs are called Hopinavoti. Some people still practice traditional dry farming techniques to raise corn and other crops which utilizes existent moisture in the soil and is dependent on natural precipitation. There is winter snow and summer monsoon rains. There are 34 living clans spread out among the 12 Hopi villages. Each clan is made up of individuals who trace their ancestry matrilineally. Each village is self-governing and autonomous, and members of the Hopi tribe often identify themselves by their village and clan affiliations. The Hopi Reservations encompasses approximately 1.5 million acres with an elevation of 5,700- 7,200 feet. In Hopi it is known as Tuuwanasave “the center of the universe”.The main places people live are on First, Second, and Third Mesa. The First Mesa Consolidated Villages also offer organized tours of the area.On First Mesa are three Hopi and Arizona Tewa villages: Hano, Sitsomovi, and Waalpi. First Mesa is known for its handmade Hopi pottery, artistic paintings and Hopi carvings. Polacca is below First Mesa. The first village (Hano) you reach looks Hopi but is really a settlement of the Tewa, a Pueblo tribe from the Rio Grande region to the east. These people fled the Spanish after the successful revolt in 1680. Sichomovi is next. Walking from Sichomovi, the mesa narrow to just 15 feet before widening again at Walpi. Signs outside houses in Walpi and the other First Mesa villages let you know where to shop. Usually men carve the kachina dolls and women fashion the pottery. Although most kachina dances at First Mesa remain closed to the public, you may be able to attend social dances. The most amzing Hopi village to visit is Walpi on First Mesa. To sign up for a tour, drive to the top of First Mesa and continue through the village to Ponsi Hall Visitor Center where you’ll see signs for the tours. The tours, which last 1 hour, are led by Hopis who will tell you the history of the village and explain a bit about the local culture.Ponsi Hall Visitor CenterPhone: (928)737-2670Community Development Office or (928)737-2262Ponsi Hall Tours: Daily between 9am and 3pm (8am to 4pm in summer) The last tour leaves one hour before closing. Second Mesa is known for its weaving, wicker plaques, and yucca baskets, paintings, and Hopi Over-lay Jewelry. Second Mesa has a diner, Hopi Fine Arts-Alph Secakuku gallery, and a post office and supermarket. Mishongnovi is east of Shipaulovi, at the end of an eastern projection of Second Mesa. Dances often take place here. Shungopavi is the largest of the three Second Mesa villages. A sign near the village entrance states that dances are closed to non-Indians, though that’s not always the case. Ask in the village. Oraibi is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlement on the North American continent, said to have been established in 1100 A.D. Kykotsmovi, also known as New Oraibi, has the offices of the Hopi Tribal Council. Kykotsmovi Village Store in town sells groceries and fixes pizza, subs, and snacks. The Cultural Preservation Office (P.O. Box 123, Kykotsmovi, AZ 86039, 928/734-3613, 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Mon.–Fri.) provides information for visitors to the Hopi Indian Reservation at its office in the Tribal Headquarters building. Old Oraibi (Orayvi) is perched on the edge of Third Mesa dates from 1150. The ruin near Old Oraibi on the south end of the mesa is all that remains of a church built in 1901 by the Mennonite minister, H.R. Voth. It was destroyed by lightning in 1942. Old Oraibi is two miles west of Kykotsmovi. Avoid driving through the village and stirring up dust; park outside—or next to Hamana So-o’s Arts & Crafts—and walk. Hotevilla (Hot’vela) Founded in 1906 after the split from Old Oraibi. Bacavi (Paaqavi) was started when the You-ke-oma loyalists who returned to Old Oraibi under federal pressure continued to clash with the people of Tawa-quap-tewa. At one point, when two of the returning women died in quick succession, cries of witchcraft went up. Finally, in November 1909, tensions became unbearable. Members of the unwelcome group packed their bags once more and settled at a new site called Bacavi.Moenkopi (Munqapi) is two miles southeast of Tuba City. Chief Tuba (about 1810–87) of Oraibi, founded Moenkopi (“The Place of Running Water”) in the 1870s. Mormons constructed a woolen mill in 1879 with plans to use local labor, but the Hopi disliked working with machinery and the project failed. Moenkopi has two sections—only the upper village participates in the Hopi Tribal Council; the more conservative lower village does not.The masked kachina dances for which the Hopi are most famous are held from January to July. However, most kachina dances are closed to the non-Hopi public. Social dances (usually open to the public) are held August through February. If you’re on the reservation during these months, ask if any dances are taking place. You might get lucky. Snake Dances (usually closed to the non-Hopi public) are held August through December. Kachinas, whether in the form of dolls or masked dancers, are representative of the spirits of everything from plants and animals to ancestors and sacred places. More than 300 kachinas appear on a regular basis in Hopi ceremonies, and another 200 appear occasionally. The kachina spirits are said to live in the San Francisco Peaks to the southwest and at Spring of the Shadows in the east. Kachinas appear to the Hopi from the winter solstice on December 21 until mid-July. They bring clouds and rain to water the all-important corn crop, but they also ensure health, happiness, long life, and harmony in the universe. A kachina can take three forms: a powerful unseen spirit, a dancer filled with the spirit, or a wooden figure representing the spirit. Kachina dancers are always male, even when the spirit is female. Sacred clowns known as koyemsi, koshares, and tsukus entertain spectators between the dances, and bring a counterpoint to the very serious nature of the kachina dances. Non-Hopis attending dances have often become the focus of attention for these clowns. That is because you represent things that are not proper or Hopi. The Spanish arrived to Hopi lands in 1540 A.D. The first Hopi village they visited was Awatovi. They noted that there were about 16,000 Hopi and Zuni people. In 1582–1583 the Hopi were visited by Antonio de Espejo’s expedition. He noted that there were five Hopi villages and 12,000 Hopi people. There were then random visits over many years. The Spanish never left any troops on their land.Beginning in 1629, 30 Franciscan friars and troops came to Hopi country. The Franciscans had missionaries assigned and built a church at Awatovi. There were a lot of Spanish abuses. In 1655, a Franciscan priest by the name of Salvador de Guerra beat to death a Hopi man named Juan Cuna. In 1656, a Hopi man by the name of Juan Suñi was sent to Santa Fe as an indentured servant (slave) because he impersonated the resident priest Alonso de Posada at Awatovi (most likely as a sacred clown). A few conversions took place at the pueblo of Awatovi bt not in other villages. In late the 1670s, the Rio Grande Pueblos put forward the plan to revolt in 1680 and drive the Spanish out. The Hopi joined this plan. It was successful. All Spanish were killed or driven out of what is now New Mexico and Arizona. At Awatovi, the Spanish soldiers, missionaries, friars, and priests were all put to death, and the churches and mission buildings were burned and dismantled stone by stone. It took two decades for the Spanish to reassert their control over the Rio Grande Pueblos but the never took control again on Hopi land. In 1700, the Spanish friars had begun rebuilding a smaller church at Awatovi. That winter all the Spanish and all the male converts were killed and Awatovi was destroyed. The site was never reoccupied. The Spanish never succeeded again. The Hopi were left alone for the most part for 150 years until Mormons started showing up in 1858. In 1887, a federal boarding school was established at Keams Canyon and the era of being oppressed and imprisoned by the American began. Federal troops threatened to arrest the Hopi parents who refused to send their children to school in 1890. In December 1890, for example, soldiers entered Orayvi and, through coercion and force, secured 104 children for the school in Keams Canyon. According the E.H. Plummer, the agent in Fort Defiance in 1893, the school was crowded and the buildings were inadequate. Disease was a problem in such a setting. Plummer wrote to the commissioner of Indian Affairs and explained his reluctance to force the school issue too strongly: "If deaths occur a strong prejudice will be aroused against the school, to say nothing of the policy of conducting a boarding school for any human pupils with such conditions of accommodations." Despite these dangers, government agents tried to persuade parents to enroll their children in school voluntarily. Most resisted. In January 1894, Plummer told the superintendent of the Keams Canyon School to stop issuing annuity goods and cease all work on houses and wells for the villages of Second Mesa for force the kids away from their families. There was two feet of snow lay on the ground and the temperature was 17 degrees below zero. On November 25, troops came to Orayvi and arrested 19 Hopi men: Heevi'ima, Polingyawma, Masatiwa, Qotsventiwa, Piphongva, Lomahongewma, Lomayestiwa, Yukiwma, Tuvehoyiwma, Patupha, Qotsyawma, Sikyakeptiwa, Talagayniwa, Talasyawma, Nasingayniwa, Lomayawma, Tawalestiwa, Aqawsi, and Qoiwiso. Because they were arrested by government troops, these men were taken first to Fort Defiance, and then to Alcatraz, a military installation on a harsh island in San Francisco Harbor. These men spent nearly a year at Alcatraz. This photo was taken as “proof of life” became of rumors and unrest over the idea that the men had been killed. The Hopi established a constitution to create a tribal government, and in 1936 elected a Tribal Council. The constitution consists of thirteen articles, addressing territory, membership, and organization of their government with elected legislative, executive and judicial branches. The traditional powers and authority of the Hopi villages were also preserved in the 1936 constitution. Constitution of the Hopi Tribe The elected Tribal Chairman in 2019 is Chairman Timothy L. Nuvangyaoma. Clark Tenakhongva is vice chairman. The chairman and vice chairman get much of their authority from the Tribal Council, which functions like a city government. The chairman presides over meetings but doesn’t vote except to break a tie. Here is the tribal website. Welcome! - The Hopi Tribe “We invite and encourage you to visit our Hopi lands. Tribal Government - The Hopi Tribe“Hopiqatsit hintsakqw a’ni tumalanìikyangw put angqw naat mongvaswa”“Despite the difficulty of the Hopi way of life, good things undoubtedly still come from it.”Here is a small part of the yearly complex Hopi calendar. A lot more duties and rituals are private, even to other Hopi if the are not in that clan or kiva society.Wuwuchim and Soyala (November to December) These months symbolize the time of creation of the world. The villages tend to be quiet, as Hopi spend time in silence, prayer, and meditation. Wuwuchim, a tribal initiation ceremony, marks the start of the ceremonial calendar year. Young men are initiated into adulthood, joining one of four ceremonial societies. The society a man joins depends on his sponsor. Upon acceptance, the initiate receives instruction in Hopi creation beliefs. He’s presented with a new name, and his childhood name is never used again. Only the Shungopavi village performs the entire Wuwuchim ceremony, and not every year. Other villages engage in parts of the Wuwuchim. The Soyala Kachina appears from the west in the winter solstice ceremony, marking the beginning of the kachina season. As the days get longer, the Hopi begin planning the upcoming planting season; fertility is a major concern in the ceremony.Buffalo Dances (January) Men, women, and children perform these social dances in the plazas. They deal with fertility, especially the need for winter moisture in the form of snow.Powamuya, the Bean Dance (February) Bean sprouts are grown in a kiva as part of a 16-day ceremony. On the final day, kachina dancers form a long parade through the village. Children of about 10 years are initiated into kachina societies during the Powamuya. Ogre kachinas appear on First and Second mesas.Kiva Dances (March) A second set of nighttime kiva dances consists of Anktioni or “repeat dances.”Plaza Dances (April, May, and June) The kachina dancers perform in all-day ceremonies lasting from sunrise to sunset, with breaks between dances. The group—and the people watching—concentrate in a community prayer calling on the spirits to bring rain for the growing crops.Niman, the “Home Dance” (July) At the summer solstice on June 21, the plaza dances end and preparations begin for the Going Home Ceremony. In a 16-day rite, the last of the season, kachina dancers present the first green corn ears, then dance for rain to hasten growth of the remaining crops. Their spiritual work done, the kachinas return to their mountain home.Snake, Flute, and Butterfly Dances (August) The Snake and Flute ceremonies, held in alternate years, represent the clan groups who perform them in the interests of a good harvest and prosperity. The Snake Dance, usually closed to non-Hopi, takes place in even-numbered years at Shungopavi and Hotevilla and in odd-numbered years at Mishongnovi. The snakes, often poisonous rattlers, act as messengers to the spirits. The Flute Ceremony takes place in odd-numbered years at Shungopavi and Walpi. The Butterfly Dance, a social dance performed mainly by children, takes place in all villages. It also celebrates the harvest.Women’s Society Dances (September, October, and Early November) Held in the plazas, these ceremonies celebrate the harvest with wishes for health and prosperity. Chaos reigns during the Basket Dances; female dancers throw out baskets and other valuables to the audience, who engage in a mad free-for-all to grab the prizes. They mark the end of the ceremonial year.

What video game made you go, "Well that was a waste of 60 bucks." Why?

While nowhere near the $60 mark, my (refunded) purchase of this…’game’ still makes me shudder. A relatively recent release that stirred up a massive storm within the PC community. The quality, the characters, the gameplay, the staff. All of it left something to be desired or was not there to begin with. You might know what I’m talking about.Oh yes, Hunt Down the Freeman. It was announced as a fan-made short film taking place in the Half-Life universe before, during, and probably after the events of the HL2 and, if we’re being honest, it probably would have been better if it stayed that way. Instead the developers got the idea to turn it into a standalone game. In this you play as a Marine called ‘Mitchell’ who gains a personal vendetta against Gordon Freeman and swears revenge after Freeman basically maims Mitchell during the Black Mesa Incident. When the first trailers were released everyone was hyped. And why shouldn’t they? For all the world the game looked a lot like a spiritual successor to Half Life: Opposing Force, an expansion for HL1 that again, let you take control of a marine. As the Steam store page says for HDTF, You are the villain. The trailers showed new weapons, innovative systems like a parkour system and new enemies not present in the original games. This is the Half-Life game we’ve wanted! Right?Wrong. As soon as the game was released people instantly started kicking up a storm when they noticed something about the maps and weapons and models. That is, virtually none of them belonged to the game’s development team. People went so far as to compile a list detailing all of the assets that were stolen from other creators straight from the steam workshop. Not only was this blatant thievery, but it also impacted the gameplay. Considering none of the maps were built for HDTF, you quickly lose the Half-Life vibe. No more seamless level transitions, instead you get awkward fade-to-blacks, from a well-lit office lobby filled with invisible walls that for some reason is meant to be a hotel into a darkened unusually spacious area. There are no indicators of where you’re meant to go. In one scenario you emerge from an alleyway to see soldiers battling it out with Combine synth forces in a fortified position. Naturally, you’d assume that you’re meant to grab a gun and join the battle, and every indicator the game gives reinforces this. Instead, after battling the Combine for 10 minutes straight you realize that they’re just an endless wave, casually brushing off their gigantic weapons dealing only 1 point of damage, you spy some discrete alleyway you had no idea even existed, and rush off to abandon your soldiers and find out that was the way you were meant to go the whole time.Another example is a sequence where you are on a train after successfully evacuating the city. For some reason you climb onto the roof, get a minigun from someone who teleports from thin-air onto the roof for some reason and…start battling combine gunships. You think that this time you’re definitely meant to stand and fight, so you fight…and fight….and fight…and 20 minutes after you first begun and the train is down to the locomotive you take a step back inside and the level abruptly ends. The characters are virtually non-existent. You have a stereotypical British man fighting for the U.S army for some reason, a typical edgy ‘mystery’ man you discover was part of the ‘Black Ops’ from Black-Mesa, stereotypical ‘Yee-Haw!’ american cowboy with the most irritating mustache, Pyrocinal who in an alternate universe joined the USMC, and President Keemstar. The protagonist is no better. In fact to an extent he’s worse. His whole cause for doing things is just…wrong. He doesn’t even know who Freeman is until the G-man names him for whatever reason. Even worse is how edgy he is. His trench-coat, his overly typical and cliche end quote, ‘You have my permission to die.’ He’s not a villain, instead he’s a complete bore.Even worse, the lead developer who’s name I can’t be bothered to get is the final nail in the coffin. Frequently lying to, manipulating and in some cases acting totally hostile to players and interviewers, some staff were so ashamed that they left the team and wrote their own expositions on the lead developer’s screw-ups, including leaving out key details when telling map designers what to make, such as what the level was going to include (see above). Further hurting the game’s reputation is belief that bots were used to ensure the game got ‘greenlit’ on Steam. On top of all this, you’ve got the general clunkiness, crashes, bugs and other issues common to games of this standard and Hunt Down the Freeman makes for a rather…interesting ride. The game is more equivalent to a poorly done mod and if it had been marketed as such and released for free, perhaps people would have been less critical. But they lost that privilege the second they announced HDTF as a standalone, paid game. Hunt Down the Freeman is one of those rare games that is so bad it’s good in its own right and worth making fun of.
