Numbers can be misleading, and more so in the game of cricket where lots of intangible variables come into the equation. Today nobody remembers VVS Laxman for the 8000 runs he scored in Test cricket. Everybody remembers him for his epic 281 in a memorable fighback in a Test against Australia at Kolkata in 2001. Mention VVS, and everybody has a sparkle in their eyes: “Oh, the 281!!!”. Similarly, even though Jacques Kallis has better numbers than Garfield Sobers, Sobers is considered the greatest allrounder in the history of the game —- he is remembered for how he played the game than for his numbers. Brian Lara is always held in awe for his breathtaking 153 not out against Australia, turning an absolutely hopeless situation into victory for the West Indies. Not many people are going to look into his nearly 12000 runs in Test cricket. Nobody is going to care how many runs Dhoni scored in yesterday’s match, they will always regret that he did not go bonkers when India desperately needed Dhoni to dance down the crease and hit fours and sixes when India needed 72 off 31 balls. Dhoni’s approach took everybody by surprise since he was not showing the intention nor the initiative to take the enemy by the scruff of the neck. Instead he settled for singles when a much more aggressive counterattack was required. The basic tenet of playing cricket is to beat the opposition in a match, and Dhoni and Jadhav failed at that. For those who think that Dhoni is too old to hit 72 in 31 balls, well if Dhoni thought on those lines he should not have been playing for India in the first place. As for the comparison with Hardik Pandya, he got out when trying to win the match for India, and I doff my hat for Hardik.Just to add to the discussion, I am reminded of Richard Hadlee’s selfless act in the 1985 Brisbane Test against Australia. Hadlee had taken eight wickets and was in prime position to take all ten. However when Geoff Lawson lofted Vaughan Brown and the ball lobbed towards Hadlee, Hadlee caught it without worrying about ruining his own chances of taking all ten wickets in the innings. Later on, in an interview, Richard Hadlee said that as a member of the fielding side his primary job was to dismiss the opposition at the first opportunity and not worry about personal records or milestones. In this context, that Pakistan or Sri Lanka or Bangladesh would be affected by England winning is of no relevance to me. That India were playing the match against England and that they should do everything possible in their powers to beat England was all that I wanted happening. You play the game to win every match, you don’t play the game to manipulate the various team positions.

My first week in basic training and we were broken down into platoons for the “what are your names and why did you join the Army?”Kid steps up and says he joined because he was drafted. He got his “draft notice” in the mail. Mind you this was April 2001. Drill Sergeant does a double take and says “you mean your selective service registration?”They took him back into the 1SG’s office and he disappeared. I asked a DS about it later and turns out he got his selective service registration in the mail and his out of touch parents sent him down to the recruiter who told him he was drafted.Remember folks, recruiters should never be trusted. If you are stupid this is doubly so.
