I’ve purchased property in Chattanooga, lived, worked and attended school in Chattanooga. So I have some experience on the topic. The city of Chattanooga, has always been a transportation and trading hub do to its location on the Tennessee River. Since the interstate commerce act, which brought the I-75 and I-24 piped to the city. Chattanooga is the ‘Gateway’ (right at the mid-way point) between Atlanta and Knoxville on I-75 and Birmingham and Nashville on I-24/I-59, and of course Atlanta and Nashville. That same could be said about Huntsville.With that said, Chatt’s with in a ~6 hour drive or less to Atlanta, Macon, Augusta, Albany, Mobile, Huntsville, Montgomery, Birmingham, Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Jackson, Louisville, Lexington, Cincinnati, Ashville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Greenville-Spartanburg, and of course everything in between. Besides Charlotte, Greensboro, and Cincinnati every one of those destinations is under 5 hours from Chattanooga if trip is planned accordingly. As one might be able to guess, Chattanooga has a nifty central location within 6 hours or less of ~25 million people, maybe more. The reason why I pointed out Chattanooga’s position in relation to the other cities is that logistics, transportation, and trade are still a huge part of the city’s commerce and job market. Two of the largest trucking/transportation firms in the country, US Xpress and Covenant Transport, are headquartered in Chattanooga. Consequently there is a lot truck drivers. There is also fairly large UPS and FedEx shipping hubs in Chattanooga.Continuing on, the insurance business seems to be pretty big in Chattanooga, two of the largest employers of employs in Chattanooga are headquarted in Chatta: Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) and Unum Provident. Unum has very strong heritage in the city of Chattanooga, and some of the cities richest socialites are heirs of founding/board members of Unum. The Cigna insurance company also has large offices in Chattanooga.Besides the transportation and insurance industries, Chattanooga metropolitan area is known for manufacturing. There are many well known manufacturing firms in Chattanooga. The world’s first Coca-Cola bottling company was started in Chattanooga. The Maytag corporation was purchased by GE around a decade ago and Maytag’s manufacturing plant was turned into Whirlpool plant. The Miller industries towing firm is headquartered in Chattanooga. There is a huge BASF facility on Amnicola Hwy. There is an Amazon shipping/transport hub near the Volkswagen plant, both of those facilities (Amazon and Volkswagen) employ thousands of seasonal, temporary, and/or contract employees. The McKee Foods bakery firm, who manufacturers the ‘Little Debbie’ is headquartered in Chattanooga. The chemical and pharmaceutical corporation Chattem, who I believe was purchased by a european firm a few years back, was headquartered here and has manufacturing facilities in Chattanooga. The Shaw corporation, which I think Warren Buffet bought, which is the largest producer of carpet in the world, was founded and headquarter in Dalton, Ga. Dalton is part of the Chattanooga Metro Area and a suburb of Chattanooga. Actually there are numerous carpet mills and manufacturing firms whose revenue is generated from the carpet industry located in Dalton.Construction and Engineering also play a very big role in the local job market, from small general contractors to engineering consulting firms. CBL, one of the world’s largest construction firms in the area of building and maintaining shopping malls is headquartered in Chattanooga. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), one of the nation’s largest electrical power producers, has cultivated a huge Engineering scene in Chattanooga. The Engineering Science job market is very prominent for EE, CivE, ME, and Engineering Managers. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga has a graduate level engineering program currently ranked in the top 20 in the nation! I kid you not, with only a few top names like MIT, Georgia Tech, Cal Tech etc; ahead of UTC. Actually the whole engineering and computer science department at UTC is pretty good!Healthcare also plays a major role in long term employment in Chattanooga. There are thousands and thousands of Healthcare workers in Chattanooga. In the metropolitan area there are numerous full Hospitals, and multiple rehabilitation hospitals for potential healthcare workers. The only business to do a Billion dollars worth of local commerce is Erlanger hospital. By this I mean the money was earned in the Chattanooga City limits, by works of the Chattanooga metro area.I probably left out quite few employers, and if your company or employer was not mentioned, PLEASE FORGIVE ME!!
