Absolutely we can tell . . . It’s almost like a gut reaction. I review admissions applications for one of the top/largest law schools in the world, as well as scholarship applications for several organizations, and I can always tell if something is written by the applicant and from the heart because I’ve seen everything, including grades, test scores, courses taken in undergrad, extra-curricular activities, community service, etc. I also generally interview any applicant who makes it past the application stage so if I and others on the admissions/scholarship team all miss it in the writing, we will almost definitely pick up on it at the point of the interview.Further, I have absolutely NO interest in reading any more “stock essays” that say nothing about the applicant as an individual and are just written to say what some company things we want to hear. Trust me when I share that all of the universities and organizations with which I have been affiliated care about admitting individuals who can add to their student body in a enriching way. While, of course, some students will have such incredible grades / test scores, and some students will have such poor grades / test scores, that the essay, writing sample and/or interview will mainly be a formality, yet the majority are in the middle with great grades, great test scores and need to show their individuality to make themselves stand out. The best way to explain how I read essays / writing samples is I ask myself, “if I were in class with this individual, would they enhance my learning experience by bringing an interesting and individual perspective to the material / class / subject, or is this person just going to parrot the books back to the class?” You can be sure I’m going to try an admit the applicant who would be an individual who would enhance my learning experience.Good luck!

A2A. While I don’t know the custom for this scholarship or for applications in those countries I will say that typed applications are the norm most places currently. If they want a writing sample they will ask for one. Typed is not more realistic or believable in content than handwritten in post-Victorian times.

First, figure out what type of scholarship you are applying for and which ones you are qualified for. Is it an application for financial support because you come from a low income background; or, is it an academic scholarship because you were at the top of your high school class in grades and extra-curricula activities. So, first figure out what types of scholarships you "might" be qualified for--so do your homework and then obtain the scholarship applications and they will walk you through what information you need to provide.
