PDF Editor FAQ

Is it possible to do post-graduation in genetics after an MBBS in India?

As far as I know, and as other answers suggest there are no postgraduate courses like MD in genetics following MBBS.However, one can pursue a post grad degree in Medicine/ pediatrics/ obgyn and then do a superspecilty DNB or a FNB course. There are also molecular genetics and molecular hematology courses open to pathologists( one needs to have a MD degree first) in few of the premier institutes of our country. Hematology and oncology is a branch when pursued leads to a lot of genetics related work. Clinical courses would entail only its application to patients without any real laboratory work, while if one pursues Pathology or biochemistry it is possible to do laboratory work in genetics. As far as my knowledge of geneticists with a MSc or a Phd without MBBS goes they are pretty far removed from practicalities of clinical genetics and can’t seem to comprehend the day to day problems of clinicians or laboratory specialists in doing gentics related work in hospital. There are a select few who can marry genetics with clinical nitty gritty and few who understand this kind of work but are very rare to find.I guess you’ve read in between the lines here, if not read on…Once you do a clinical MD and spend 9 -10 years doing it, doing genetics and learning that most patients can’t afford the investigations you intend to inflict upon them, will frustrate you, especially when doing a Cardiology/ pediatric intensivist/ fertility specialization is far more lucrative than doing a super specialization in Genetics, which would be dependent on institutional support. Speaking of institutional support, the biggest institution, our government, has dengue/H1N1/ water borne diseases/mass deaths in NICU and other day to day problems to face, we’ve just woken up to menace of non communicable diseases like diabetes and CAD a couple of decades back. Most our government has done for inherited/genetic disorders is give free blood transfusions to congenital hemolytic anemias like Thalassemia and coagulation products to Hemophilia patients, this happened in last decade after a lot of lobbying. We are beginning the process of networking blood banks, so that blood and products are available to everyone, there is severe shortage even otherwise. Where do you think we should be allocating our limited resources? For the paraclinical branches, for a pathologist/biochemist to do genetics, the problem is to get funding for research/investigations. Cytogenetics the most basic investigation requires an entire lab and still does not get you very far, as you look to add on FISH, PCR, Genomic hybridisation and other aspects to your laboratory set up you better be ready with gear to scale mount everest, metaphorically speaking. Unlike a clinician, a pathologist/ biochemist has to make ends meet with far less income in our country, a clinician can make money rain if he/she decides to let go off some morals, but that is not so for a paraclinical fellow. One will require serious monetary support from parents to get through (you’ll be 30+ with probably a wife and a child at this stage), its not possible for most of us.This small diatribe, should tell you why, even those of us who are interested can’t pursue genetics. It requires a lot more sacrifice than just time, money, family and pride. The knowledge that you can let go off all the hard work and pain at a stage to have better life, makes most people not opt for this route.Choose carefully, choose wisely. There are consequences to choices we make. The blue pill may be far better than the red pill.

I'm a university student in South Africa is there any loan, organization or bursary kind of thing that can help me raise R4200 or if there is someone here who's willing to pay straight to my university account?

There are a couple of suggestions:One is to ask the university if there is any way you can work for them and have them deduct it from the service you provide the university. For ex: you recruit other students and ask them for a commission or applicable offer to reduce the rands owed. There are wealthy people who are interested in supporting students if you are planning to work for their company after education. Durban, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. If people get to know your journey, they are better able to help you.Don’t borrow- Instead exchange or giving service is a better idea. For every babysitting or online job that requires no university qualification, you collect several small funds funneling to your rands totaling for the semester. South Africa is the place where Freedom Fighters are birthed. Some photographs of South Africa and its rich heritage are still in demand. Know your demographic and its value. This will sit well if your investor is on foreign grounds.Get personal- Don’t ask vaguely. Get specific about who you ask and how you ask. Know if they’re willing to invest in you and will do it without pressuring you to get into a loan agreement or payback if you don’t have anything to give back right away.Always give people a channel to help you. If you gave us some pathway like Paypal or FNB pathway to put that fund into your hands. We can do it without searching all over the place for you and your details to support you. Leave us options one way or the other.Make relationships a currency. Make friends with faculty, university staff, people who are in the power to ensure that lack of funds will not just cause hiccups in the educational journey. Ex: Find their need and solve their problem. This should stand as the credibility of intentionality and awareness when you face them later for funds or other issues.Family, Friends, Acquaintances and Public personnel- Ask people who are givers and if they’ve been given so it would sit in their mind the idea to want to give the same way they were given. Sponsored people want to be sponsors because they want to give back. Your responsibility is to be found by such people.Develop financial principles- set up a system that makes your life easier and free from the stress of borrowing or paying interest. Working on yourself emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually all pay heavy dividends ultimately. Diversify your investments and make time your best friend- Money will make sense even when just paying semester funds.Be proactive- Today, Tomorrow, and the one after- Diligence - you may ask today and get one answer but if you keep asking you will ultimately land the solution one way or another. Every place and people are not the same. Where one is no, another says yes. You’ll know if you take the calculated risks and work the strategy right. Conversations are different with different people. Some people have an abundant mindset( glass full and over), glass half full ( mindset), and glass empty ( mindset)- ask consciously. This is the last one- Google people who went to the same university as you. LinkedIn helps you connect with people who went to the same university you are going to and you can send an invitation for people to help you on other platforms thus giving them a chance to stay up to date with your educational journey and how you’re progressing along.

Amazing software, Unreal flexibility for the price. Only thing I would change is possibly the phone numbers as we are not all in US. All in all, saves hours a week.
