My name is Venkatraman Radhakrishnan.I remember from time immemorial complaining to my mom why did you keep my name this way. Even Tamilnadu Express has fewer coaches than letters in my name.Tamilians don't have a surname. Venkatraman is my name and Radhakrishnan is my dad's name. My parents named me Venkatraman after my great grandfather.Being a South Indian and living most parts of my childhood in North, I would get asked by other kids, ‘what kind of name do you have’. I run out of space to fill my name in forms.I pity the Western folks. When I was in UK people would get mortified when they saw my name. Their brains would work overtime deciding how to pronounce my name and with great difficulty they would say, ‘When Cat Rad Had Chris Nan’.Once a poor bloke from the electricity company called me. ‘Am I speaking to V E N K A T R A M A N long pause R A D H A K R I S H N A N’, he spelt my name out because he didn't know how to pronounce it. I said yes, probably I should have told him ‘sorry I didn't get you, please repeat it again’.When I started out on Quora I just gave my name as Venkat. Then I got a message that you are blocked as it is not your full name. I changed to Venkatraman, after few days I was blocked again telling my name doesn't confirm to their policies. Only after I wrote my full name did Quora finally unblock me. ‘Come on Quora, you too’.I did ensure my kids have short, sweet and easily pronounceable names. I try to make my parents regret keeping my name but they seem least bothered. At the end of the day, my name is what I am and I am proud of it. But you can still call me Venky.
