PDF Editor FAQ

Did your pet (cat/dog etc.) ever do something which cost you a fortune?

Hennessy, my female Boxer pup tore into my $3000 bed mattress. When I got a brand new sofa for my living room, she destroyed it on the very first day. Cost? $1000.When Hennessy took an attack from a Great Dane, her vet bill was $1000. The owner of the Great Dane never paid for it.When my male Boxer/pit rescue, Moose, took an attack by the same Great Dane two years afterwards, his vet bill was $1000. Again, the owner never paid for it.I'm now in the process of moving abroad to another country. Vet checks, vaccinations, flea and tick treatment, deworming, health certificates, import/export permits, specialized dog crates, and flight tickets will be roughly $2000 for both dogs.Thousands of dollars spent and lost for my two dogs, but I think, and still think, they're worth it.

I want to buy a golden retriever puppy. What things must I know so that I can take good care of it? What is the best place in India to buy the puppy?

First and foremost, you need to understand that having a puppy is like having a child. If you're buying a Golden puppy, you're making a commitment of about 8 to 12 years.Finances:Buying a puppy is more expensive than buying an adult dog. You are looking at vaccinations, deworming, doggy sicknesses, spaying/nuetering (please make your dog sterile unless you wish to breed or put up with behavioral problems), regular vet checkups, dog toys, crates, grooming expenses, extra pet expense when traveling, and of course, lots and lots of dog food. Do make sure you can get a dog only if you can afford it. Having to give up a pet is extremely painful, both for the owner and the animal.Lifestyle:Do you travel a lot? Do you work long hours? You cannot leave your dog alone. You can especially not leave a puppy alone. Your puppy needs to be fed and taken out to do his business. Your puppy needs a lot of socializing with other dogs and humans. You also need to spend a lot of time with him because dogs as a species are companions. Your dog would also need exercise -- two walks a day in the morning and evening, and play. Goldens are a healthy breed. They can make do in an apartment, but they need exercise. Your dog needs at least two hours of play, every day. Apart from physical exercise, he also needs mental stimulation. Goldens are smart. If they don't have things to do, they become destructive. There are specific toys for this. Of course, teaching tricks is also a great way to keep your dog mentally occupied.Training:Make sure you train your dog. Like I said, Goldens are some of the smartest dogs around, they pick up commands and tricks very easily. Use positive reinforcement (and if you think you need to be the Alpha and think Cesar Milan understands dogs, abandon all thoughts of getting a dog please) and lots of love and treats. You can start training your puppy when he's as young as 6 weeks old. 'Sit' is one of the easiest things to teach. Training your dog can be done at home, by you. It's also a great way for the dog to bond with you. It even provides both mental and physical exercise for puppies.Breed specific expectations:Your dog will develop either hip dysplasia, or cataract or cancer in old age. It's almost inevitable in Goldens. You have to know this before buying a puppy.Goldens are extremely friendly. They do wonderfully well with all kinds of people of all ages. They also do great with burglars. Don't expect a watchdog. Your dog will go lick a thief with love in the middle of the night without waking you up.Your dog will shed heavily twice a year for a week or so. There will be hair everywhere. Goldens also shed regularly throughout the year, but not too much. You have to brush and groom your dog regularly. Brush his coat once in the morning, every day, during shedding periods. This reduces hair fall and makes the hair manageable. Brush his coat once or twice a week on regular days. In fact, it is advisable you start doing this to the puppy regularly so that he doesn't resist when he's an adult. Do not bathe your dog more than once in 45 days. Bathing gets rid of natural oils that are secreted by the dog and will lead to allergies and skin problems.Goldens love eating, so obesity is common. Make sure your dog exercises and doesn't get fat. Goldens are amazing swimmers. If you have a pool or a lake nearby, your physical exercise is sorted.Selecting a puppy:Make sure you get your dog from a reputed breeder. The breeder will and should tell you not to separate the puppy from his litter till he's at least 8 weeks old (frequent visits and training are encouraged). Match puppies to your lifestyle and personality. Observe puppies at play in the litter -- the most active one might actually continue being hyperactive and demand a lot of time from you. The more calmer ones could potentially end up being calmer adults, content to not run around 24x7. But that is all subjective, puppy personalities can be easily changed with training. And goldens are very easy to train. Your new puppy typically should have a certificate about his history, his parents' health history, should be vaccinated and dewormed.

How much will a golden retriever cost?

If you have decided to get a dog, then this is probably the best decision you’ll ever take in your life. Trust me when I say, there is no greater friend, companion, child, playmate then a dog.Having said that, it is one decision you’ll regret if you and your family are not prepared for your fur ball. Getting a dog is big responsibility, as big as having a child. The only difference is Dog cannot speak ever but your child will learn to speak in time.I currently have 3 months old champion thoroughbred Golden Retriever. We call him “Jarvis” after Tony Starks legendary Artificial Intelligence. Jarvis comes from the 3 generations of Thoroughbred Champion show dogs. However, I think “Champion Gene” skipped this guy and only “Show Dog” remains. But its too early to tell. Having said that, we have a Pedigree.A thoroughbred pedigreed Golden Retriever will cost upwards of INR 25,000 in India. However, you can get mix bred anywhere between INR 8,000–15,000.Whenever you are buying a dog, always insist of KCI (Kennel Club of India) certification, immunisation & deworming records of puppy and its parents. If the breeder do not have KCI certification for breeding, parents and puppy, DO NOT BUY IT from them. But it is not the only cost you’ll have to factor in when you decide to buy a dog. As with a baby, there are lot of other costs you need to factor in. Some major costs that you will incur on your fur ball are: -Food - This is the most important part of raising a healthy, happy, satisfied and contended dog. It will also be the major recurring cost of dog ownership. Be ready to spend anywhere between INR 3,000–5,000 monthly on dog food.Your puppy will feed 4–5 times day for first 6 months of his life. Then it will settle for 2 good meals a day with a very light snack in afternoon.Quality dog food will include lots of meat/chicken/liver/fish in diet and will be expensive but will take care of your pup during growing months. Quality food will also keep him healthy, develop strong bones, muscle and it will reflect in the quality of fur, nails and teeth. This is the single most important expense that you need to take care of. Rest will be easy.Lot of time people will try to feed dogs only home cooked food but it is largely insufficient in nutrition. Lack of nutrients will show in your dogs behaviour. They will develop PICA, eating inedible things like cement, wood, stones, etc. Also, there are lot of human food which is toxic for dogs and will make you puppy very sick. Onion, garlic, sugar, salt, grapes, raisins, apricots, etc. Read about it and make sure you know it by heart. Some of these food items can kill your dog if taken in sufficient quantity. We feed Jarvis combination of dog food and home cooked meals. For Dog food we use Drools Focus Puppy, Super Premium Dog Food and Drools Puppy Treats Real Chicken and Liver Chunks in Gravy.Morning and Evening meals for Jarvis is Boiled Rice mixed with boiled peas, boiled potatoes, fresh Boiled Chicken or Chicken Liver mixed with Drools kibbles.Afternoon and Night meal is boiled rice mixed with Drools Chicken and Liver Gravy. At times, we get full skinless chicken, liver and boil it at home. Then give it to Jarvis mixed with rice, peas, potatoes. Best of of boiling at home is you can use water as Chicken/Liver Stock for your dog to be used on his dry kibbles or other food items.Training and Treats - To train your dog, you need treats and lots of it. Everything from Sit, lie down, stay to roll over, drop it and other complex activities on command will require treats. Nothing is more off-putting than a untrained and wild dog. So please, train your dog. Get professional help if you have to. Professional trainer will charge on an average INR 10,000 per month to train your dog. Best part is, the cost is for limited time only. Once trained, you won’t need professional trainer again. Golden Retrievers are top 4 smartest dogs and they learn command on 4–5 repetitions.Health Supplements - You will need to shell out on an average INR 500 monthly on health supplements. These supplements will be for Fur & Coat, Vitamins, Calcium, Digestion and Salmon Oil for overall skin, coat and fur.Immunisation - It will cost anywhere between INR 500 - 5,000 depending on vet hospital you visit. 3 shots in combination on 3–5 vaccines starting at 3 months. And then a booster every 12 months for rest of life.Deworming - Usually it is the part of regular visits to vet but depending on your surrounding and dog’s crap eating habits, your dog may or may not need more than regular dose.Grooming - Dog Shampoo, conditioners, brush, combs, flea/tick powders/sprays all cost on average INR 1,500 per months. Now everyone will tell you that your dog should be bathed once a month or something like that. But you need to understand, majority of online information about dog is based on US or colder climate. India is a hot country. you will need to bathe your dog every 15 days at the least. During peak. summers your dog needs to be bathed every week. I would recommend using oatmeal shampoo. It will be pricey but it will protect your dog’s coat and skin from drying out. Also remember, Golden Retriever has a thick coat. They have double coat and they smell more than most dogs. That smell can lot of time become very unpleasant due to heat and/or humidity.Bed, Crate and Toys - You will need loads of toys and a toy basket. Shuffle the toys regularly to keep you pooch interested. Before you decide to buy bedding for your dog, please understand depending on your location your pup may or may not sleep on his bed. Your dog will love to sleep on floor if you are in India or in hot locations. We got massive bed for our Jarvis, however, he sleeps on the floor. He doesn't even like to sleep on rug/mat, etc. And I am based in Bangalore. If you are in folders parts of the world and in India, you will need a good bedding and a warm blanket.Crate train your dog early to have peaceful life. Dog crate for Golden will cost anywhere between INR 3,000–5,000.Time and Energy - Finally, Time is the single biggest commodity that you’ll need to spend with your dog for at least 2 years. Golden Retivers reach adulthood in 12–14 months. They reach maturity in 24–28 months. During this time they will need to leash trained and crated. They will need lot of your time and energy. No amount of money can supplant the time and energy required. Bored dog is a dangerous dog. They will chew up your house in minutes if they are bored. They need lots of exercise to grow, develop healthy muscle mass and bones and to spend all that energy. That means you will need lots of exercise. A tired dog is a very good and contented dog.You need to spend at least 2 hours daily with your dog to groom, play and run. This focused unadulterated time you spend with dog will help build bond and healthy dog. You need to brush your Golden daily for at least 15–20 minutes, else you home will be covered in hair. Golden shed copious amount of fur every day with 2 season of very heavy shedding.Their thick long silky smooth fur also attract all kinds of pest from flea to ticks and ants. You’ll need to remove them daily. To summarise, you’ll need to spend on an average INR 5,000 monthly to raise a happy healthy smart obedient dog thru its lifetime. More than money, you need to spend substantial quality time with your dog.It is in no way to discourage you. But it is what is required at the least to raise a happy healthy dog.Happy Petting!Ash Bee!P.S. - Some more pics of my English Cream Golden Retriver…Edit 1: - Thank you for 100 upvotes. But only 100 on 3.5K view?? Tch Tch…At least Upvotes for Jarvis…Edit 2: - Ever wanted to understand how to manage your money. Read my answer here - Where and how do you invest your monthly salary?
