PDF Editor FAQ
Do we live in different worlds?
Whoa. This question fascinates me.In Mexico we have a saying: "Cada cabeza es un mundo" (every head is a different world.)Have you ever read Oliver Sacks? He was a professor of neurology and wrote many incredibly beautiful books (and articles) about the experiences he came across, usually in the form of case histories. One of his books, called "Awakenings", was made into a movie with Robert De Niro.Oliver Sacks died recently and wrote several insightful and poignant articles about his experience as he approached death.Of all the books he wrote my favorite is called "An Anthropologist on Mars". (I discovered it because I was visiting a friend's house and the lights went out. The book had a glow in the dark cover so I walked right to it and pulled it off the shelf.)In it he describes seven patients with extreme neurological conditions that have integrated their illness into their lives. They have all managed to be fully functional because of what they live with and not in spite of it.The book is called "An Anthropologist on Mars" because he claims the worlds of each of his patients are so different from ours that it is akin to them living on other planets; planets he visits in order to better understand and learn from these highly adaptive personalities.I believe we each live in a different world. It's only through getting out of your own head and putting others before yourself that you can, if only temporarily, pay a visit to another person's planet. If you're lucky, you like the view and get to stay a while.
If you are using custom audiences for Facebook advertising, are you able to track who viewed and clicked an ad at the individual level?
There is a way you can do that, however, if you think you can have the info of the individuals who clicked your ad on the Facebook manager, then no, due to the privacy issues Facebook doesn’t allow that.To get the info on the people who click on your ad you can:Put up a registration form/popup/quiz on the page you’re taking the audience to. This way everyone who is directed to that page will put up their email addresses to go further.I am using Milk The Leads app on my store, the best thing about this app is that I don't have to pay for multiple lead generation apps. This one comes with gamified pop-ups that do a better job than the regular pop-ups and conversion analytics for optimization.Another app that I am using for my store is Win Ads it gives me multiple options to create a custom audience and lookalike audience. It is an all in one Pixel app. Now I can create multiple pixels and manage them in one place.I hope it answers your question.
What is an unpopular opinion you hold?
My unpopular opinion is about fighting and self-defense. And it’s something that I just discussed with a person at dinner. Last night we sat down, my Ph.D. advisor, two graduate student colleagues, and my girlfriend. During this dinner, the topic of fighting and self-defense came up, for whatever reason.I had one of the students tell me I “don’t understand how he would approach fighting.” Because of his “mentality”, it’s “his life”. He went on to tell me about how adrenaline, “the fight or flight response” will level the differences in training or size when it’s “your life on the line.” That I need to learn more about fighting “in the streetz”. (I spelled that with a z on purpose, it’s edgier that way).During this discourse, my girlfriend bit her lip, trying not to laugh. When he was telling me about how adrenaline causes a person to be “hyperfocused” and you can hit “the smallest target” because of said hyperfocus, and you have strength beyond what is normal. I’m listening with amusement when my advisor finally said, “um, ‘Kevin’, Richard’s a veteran fighter, this is… most odd.”‘Kevin’ looks at me and goes, “well, um, street fighting is different….” in a rather small voice. I agreed that it was, but I couldn’t even begin to correct him and suggested we change the subject. Here’s the unpopular opinion:Your mentality doesn’t matter, adrenaline makes you shaky and inaccurate. You WILL NOT “rise to the occasion”. If you are untrained and unused to violence, if you encounter someone that is one or the other, or worse; both; you’re going to get your clock cleaned, you’re going to lose, you may die. You suck without training when it comes to fighting. Stop thinking you’ll “take care of yourself when the time comes” because you WON’T. You’ll bleed and you’ll die.And when I say training, I don’t mean some sort of weekend seminar that teaches you a few techniques about wrist grabbing. I mean a concerted effort to train and learn how to fight. Whether it is a traditional martial art with a fighting focus and cross-training, a fight gym, whatever, I mean multiple times per week, high-effort training that involves sparring. Competition is even better and highly suggested. Most people are so unprepared for violence and so unaware of its realities that they have no idea of what fighting is all about. They have all these plans of what they’re going to do or how they’re going to fight when confronted. This is one of the truest statements ever made. All your plans, your schematics, go out the window when you get cracked in the mouth by someone who knows how to throw a punch. Oh, I’m going grab him here, then knee him, then headbutt him, then, then, then… All of it leaves your head when someone blasts you. And if you’re not trained and experienced, inoculated against the pain and the stress, it’s going to put you on your ass and result in you having a real fucked up day. Now, let’s roll this into another opinion. That of women fighting men. We’ve all seen it, the woman who talks about fighting men. Follow up related opinion:Your “attitude” doesn’t matter. Your belief in Girl Power doesn’t matter. If a woman jumps on a man, who knows how to fight, the average male is going to dismantle the average female. If you’re a woman and are attacked; self-defense tactics are meant to be enough to buy time to get away or deploy a weapon. That’s it. The woman 9/10 times is going to lose. It’s not a feminist vs misogynist opinion, it’s one of biology. Are there some women that can beat some men? Sure. Take your average unfit, everyday guy and have him jump on Claressa Shields, see what happens when she puts him into the ICU. But the average man against the average woman is a size and strength mismatch. If the male is trained, it’s a multiplier.Again, if the woman in question hasn’t trained to fight, not just to defend herself, but to fight; then she’s going to have a really bad day against someone used to violence. So many of us have seen it; the woman who says; “I can scrap, I’ll take on a guy. Every time I’ve gotten in a man’s face, he’s backed right down.”Uh-huh. He backs down because of societal norms and legal consequences, that’s why. If he wanted to he could probably flatten you, especially if he’s trained. This isn’t a slight against women, not at all. I’m a proud equal rights supporter, I’m merely stating facts learned from 27 years in martial arts and fight training, competition background a few deadly serious self-defense situations. I had a background in judo before starting BJJ, I’m also not a small guy, strong and athletic. When I was a white belt I could keep up with female blues and purples, based on power and strength. Use physical power to rip out of their guards, that kind of thing. But please, god, Odin, Horus, FSM, or whatever deity or lack thereof you wish to appeal to, please, don’t jump on a man because you think your attitude and whatever will win the day. Just… don’t.You can think adrenaline and all that will help you, and this is both sexes, but it won’t. In fact, it’s usually a hindrance. It will turn your legs to jello until you’re used to it (and then what happens to your groin kicks?) and make you shaky. Adrenaline is something that has to be managed. And you learn to manage it by stress inoculation. The most efficient form of stress inoculation is live sparring (that ramps up in intensity as one progresses) and perhaps (preferably) competition against people (of similar skill level, again progressive improvements) who want to actually beat you up so they can win. The best way to learn how to fight is to fight.I’ve worked with my girlfriend for several years now on self-defense and fight training. Her natural height and athleticism would make her a natural kickboxer, had she went that route. I mean real kickboxing, Muay Thai rules, not useless cardio bunk. She’s passable. But what she’s really concentrated on is combat handgun shooting. She carries concealed, and she knows how to use it. She can deploy and put rounds on target at shocking speed. She’s even competed in a couple of USPSA events. She has enough self-defense knowledge and ability to create space, and then shoot her attacker until the son of a bitch (statistically a male) stops moving. What about women in countries with strict gun laws? Learn to use common and legal weapons in your area. Find out what’s used, train in a martial art that teaches discipline and promotes clear thinking in stress, and train to use that weapon. It all comes back to having an idea of what violence is all about, understand one’s own limitations, and training for it.Understand that if you’re not trained, your mentality will not win you the fight. You’re not going “to see red” and start smashing people. You’re not going to win unless you’re naturally athletic or strong and your attacker is generally untrained. Real fighting is completely different in the minds of those that have fought and the minds that have not.One has natural caution and reticence based on experience. The other thinks they will rise to the occasion.Remember the words of Mike Tyson.
