What should I do to control my mind?
Two opposing proofs:1. You can’t control.2. You can control.1. Proof that you cannot control the mind is seen when you try to NOT think.Attempt this exercise:— Be prepared to not obey the below instruction.— Just relax after reading the instruction.— Do not obey. Do not think “on purpose.”— Read but do not follow the instruction.Ready for the “ten seconds of abiding” challenge?Instruction:Think of types of fruit that are red.——————————— See? That’s proof that your mind churns without your permission.— See? That’s proof that the mind responds automatically.— See? That’s proof that life’s spurs are potent and “work” the mind.— See? There’s almost no chance of controlling life’s spurring.— See? “No” doesn’t mean “no” to a mind. “Just saying no” is impossible.— See? Even a slight attending starts brain churn. The mind relentlessly is stimulated into thinking. Life exhausts the brain. Most folks can hardly add any additional thoughts on purpose. Monks and nuns know this and have quiet places to live to avoid having their minds “marauded.” This gives them more “mental room for God.”2. Proof that the mind can be controlled is that you’ve read the words of this exercise without being “all that distracted” by side-thoughts taking your attention away from the reading process. Despite up to thousands of other “additional thoughts,” you have actually read this far into this essay. You have cherry picked this essay’s sentences out of “a thought flurry.” Between sentences, between words, even between letters of words, side thoughts — largely ignored — are “jammed into” a person’s attempts to be coherently attentive — instead of being, commonly, scatter-brained.See the challenge? We can hardly ride any train of thought. We’re buffeted by errant excitation. We can find ourselves — zoned out — dozens of side thoughts later and off topic — for whole minutes at a stretch. This was not always the case.Long ago, pristine minds were the norm. Stray thoughts happened once every few decades at most. All of creation was coherent. High fidelity was the rule; most of life’s content was blissful silence. Then it gradually got nosier. And today, we have minds that are as if bucking broncs that can hardly be ridden. Clarity is a rarity. We have riots ongoing between our ears. And it’s getting worse. What to do?— How to have less excelsior thoughts?— How to efficiently think?— How to avoid assorted mental indulgences?— How to “shoo away an unwanted fixation?”— How to train the mind? You already know dozens of ploys and tactics; and you use them. To control the mind your skill set ranges from tying a string around a finger to post-it notes to getting enough sleep to right diet to having clear goals to caffeine to taking notes to sitting up straight to whatever, you’ve got a “keep focused tool box.” And most of it is weak tea — hardly worth being used. The only solution is to see that the mind is not yours.— Meditate to discover the mind is 100% not your “artwork.”— Find out that you are a witness to a life — not a participant.— Realize that only a divine agency could have the mojo to “run the universe.”— Escape the “Person Prison.” Let God inherit you. Just watch.Result?Eggs will be broken but omelettes made. You will be delighted. No rude thought can ever again squeeze—— between you and God.
What was the most dangerous day in human history?
It was the day all civilization was just one man’s vote away from probable mass annihilation. That man refused to give it, on that most dangerous day: October 27, 1962.Vasili Arkhipov was flotilla commander present on the Soviet Foxtrot-class submarine B-59 in the Caribbean sea when it was “contacted” by American ships enforcing the blockade of Cuba during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis — the tense standoff between the USA and USSR over the issue of Soviet nuclear weapons in Cuba.Depth charges were dropped by the Americans on October 27, aimed at forcing the submarine to surface and identify itself.Refusing to comply, and with the individual submarine’s captain believing it was a hostile attack aimed at the submarine’s destruction, the sub descended further and was cut off from all outside communication. The sub’s Captain, Valentin Savitsky, came to the conclusion that war had started. He sought the necessary approval of two others on board, political officer Ivan Masslenikov and the flotilla commander Vasili Arkhipov, to launch a nuclear torpedo.Masslenikov agreed. Arkhipov refused. They were now just one man’s assent away from launching nuclear war number two, and World War number 3.It’s always a cliche to say “no one wants war, especially a nuclear one” but some actually do or did. (In this time period, for example, the new leaders of Cuba, among them Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, were then quite eager to goad and risk it, sending a letter to the Soviet leader urging on such an attack, and did so on…wait for it…. October 27, 1962, the dangerous day. Fidel Castro: I Was Wrong to Tell Khrushchev to Obliterate the U.S.).And at least some are ready to accept it if it seems like the proper duty to perform at the moment.Arkhipov held his ground, however, against the increasing anger of the submarine commander, refusing to approve a nuclear torpedo launch that would most likely trigger a conflict that would doom civilization, if not also most or all of humanity.Physical heat is reported to have risen and proper air conditioning systems collapsed in the deeply submerged vessel, but Arkhipov kept his emotional and judgmental cool even as tensions flared inside the sub that fateful October 27 — as well as in the world outside it. Working in Arkhipov’s favor was his leadership credibility earned from an earlier command in which he had saved his nuclear powered vessel from full meltdown. Vasili Arkhipov was clearly someone to take seriously on matters of life and death, submarine warfare and nuclear power. He finally convinced the captain to risk surfacing and getting updates and orders. Despite the American pursuit, they were able to do so.There was no war, they confirmed. They were instructed instead to return to the USSR.And so October 27 was very likely the most dangerous day in human history, or certainly one of the most dangerous days. One man kept his head and so, consequently, did the rest of us.Vasili Arkhipov - Wikipedia(See EJames Brennan’s other answer for another possible, and somewhat similar, day of greatest danger…..)PS — I don’t believe there has been a movie about this incident (though a few documentaries seem to have been made). But if someone did a cinematic life story of Vasili Arkhipov, even Hollywood might have difficulty casting someone sufficiently heroically dashing to play him in his younger years.
What has been the most notorious speech made in human history?
That’s a toughy. I can come up with a few suggestions.Genghis Khan.“The greatest happiness is to vanquish your enemies, to chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth, to see those dear to them bathed in tears, to clasp to your bosom their wives and daughters.”Lenin on the 16th of April in 1917.“I greet you without knowing yet whether or not you have believed in all the promises of the Provisional Government. But I am convinced that when they talk to you sweetly, when they promise you a lot, they are deceiving you and the whole Russian people. The people need peace; the people need bread; the people need land. And they give you war, hunger, no bread – leave the landlords still on the land... We must fight for the social revolution, fight to the end, until the complete victory of the proletariat. Long live the worldwide socialist revolution!"Adolf Hitler at the Berlin Sportpalast on the 18th of February in 1943."Germany, in any case, has no intention of bowing to this Jewish threat, but rather one of confronting it in due time, if need be in terms of complete and most radical erad... suppression of Judaism. I ask you: Do you want total war? If necessary, do you want a war more total and radical than anything that we can even yet imagine? Now, people, rise up, and let the storm break loose!"King Baudouin speech on the 13th of January in 1959.“The ultimate goal of our actions is, in prosperity and peace, to assist the Congolese people on their path to independence, without delay, but also without irresponsible rashness. In a civilized world, the independence of a nation symbolizes, combines and guarantees the values of freedom, order and prosperity. This goal however, can not be achieved without the following premises:strong and fair governmental institutions;a sufficient number of experienced government officials and clerks;a solid social, economic and financial organization, in the hands of experts in these fields;a broad intellectual and moral education of the people, without which, a democratic system will only be an excuse for ridicule, deception and oppression of the many by the few.We aim to create these conditions, which are at the basis of true independence, with the utmost care, in a friendly and passionate cooperation, together with our African citizens. It is not our intention to force European solutions onto the African peoples. On the contrary, we wish to promote the development of pragmatic policies and solutions, based on the African culture, that answer to the needs of the people.”Part of Fidel Castro’s speech on the 23rd of May 1963 upon accepting the Hero of the Soviet Union award.“I give you my thanks today. You will understand that this is not easy forthose who, like ourselves, have received such overwhelming affection. Thisvisit to the Soviet Union has been extraordinarily instructivefor our delegation. It is obvious that we arrived here full of gratitudeand admiration for a friendly country, which from thousands and thousandsof miles away gave our revolution decisive and invaluable aid. This was ourfirst meeting with Soviet life, with our Soviet brothers and with what thiscountry represents. What its people have achieved and its epics, heroism, and victory, cannot be fully appreciated through books, documents, films, and other methods of information. It is necessary to see and feel itfirsthand.”Doesn’t sound so bad until you’ve read an earlier letter of Castro adressed to Celia Sanchez in 1958, which reads:"When I saw the rockets being fired at Mario’s house, I swore to myself that the Americans would pay dearly for what they are doing. When this war is over a much wider and bigger war will begin for me: the war that I am going to wage against them. I know that this is my real destiny."Mao Zedong on the 16th of May in 1966.“Those representatives of the bourgeoisie who have sneaked into the Party, the government, the army, and various spheres of culture are a bunch of counter-revolutionary revisionists. Once conditions are ripe, they will seize political power and turn the dictatorship of the proletariat into a dictatorship of the bourgeoisie. Some of them we have already seen through; others we have not. Some are still trusted by us and are being trained as our successors, persons like Khruschev for example, who are still nestling beside us.”Pol Pot referring to Cambodians in 1978.“Not one seed”All absolutely horrifying and scandalous.
