PDF Editor FAQ

What is the ideal system of human education you imagine it should be in the future?

In my book, The One World Schoolhouse, the first part is about how the education system got to where it is. The middle third is about how Khan Academy happened. And the last third is essentially my view of what the ideal education system is. And we have recently started a Lab School (a separate organization from KA) to test these ideas ('A Bit Of A Montessori 2.0': Khan Academy Opens A Lab School). The general principles are:Mastery learning - allowing students to work at their own time, at their own pace, and really master concepts. This idea of mastery learning is not my idea. It’s actually a very old idea. It's arguably the oldest way of learning. But when we had free mass public education, it was a trade off that, well, you couldn't personalize for 30 students at a time. But now we have the technology, so that you can personalize for 30 students at a time. The transcript of the future should be a combination of proven competency based on bench-mark exams (that you could take multiple times if necessary), peer and teacher assessment on social-emotional traits and, most, importantly a portfolio of work that you have created.Bridge to opportunity - too much of the current system is based on a convoluted and biased process of jumping through hoops, networking and interviewing that gives a huge benefit to those who know how to navigate the system (usually folks whose parents know how). In the future, this will be dramatically simplified. You’ve shown you’re a strong programmer (especially with your portfolio) and your peers think you’re great to work with so here are a list of 10 companies that meet your criteria that already want to give you a round 3 interview.

The UK's GCSE and A level grades are now their teacher-assessed grades. Which students, if any, has this disadvantaged?

The obvious answer is people who will be leaving school in 2021.The 2020 grades awarded by teachers are by far the highest in history - massively out of line with the historical average. This means that all of the top university courses are now massively over subscribed with people who “met” the conditional offer. I am sure universities will jam as many of them in as they possibly can (more students, more money) but there are limits as to what can be done, especially for course like medicine, dentistry and veterinary sciences which have hard caps. So a lot of students from 2020 will be given guaranteed places for 2021 instead. And many of those who aren’t will still opt to take a gap year anyhow to reassess their options, or just because they want to take a gap year.So when the school leavers of 2021 turn up, they will find that big chunks of the most prestigious courses have already been filled before they got there. And of course, they will have to do exams which will be moderated in the normal way, and so their grades will come down to earth with a bump, which isn’t going to do them any favours when they are competing for places against students from 2020 who were awarded reams of As and A*s.The people who got well and truly shafted by this are the people who will leave school next year. The ones who have made out like bandits (no exam stress, sky high grades) are the ones who are still complaining vigorously about how unfair it all is.

How do teachers know which students will be the bad ones vs. the good ones on the first day of class?

I don’t know if this teachers’ assessment of the students in his class was completely accurate, but when I started the eighth grade, I had an English teacher who let everyone choose their own seats on the first day of school.Once everyone was settled at their desks, he then made an announcement that all of the students who sat in the first two rows could stay where they were, but he would be rearranging all of the other students’ places. My assumption was that he interpreted the students who chose to sit close as being attentive and respectful students.I had never had a teacher do this before - I thought it was interesting. I was always a really well behaved student and I never gave a teacher a problem. I was a little on the shy side, so I would only choose to participate if I felt really comfortable.I had chosen to sit in the first row and just one place over from the centre seat. I typically liked to be up close so that I could hear and see well ( I was also not very tall)! This worked for me. I got to stay at the desk I had chosen, which I was happy about because I was beside a friend.I don’t remember this teacher being particularly dynamic or exciting in the way that he taught, but he was very professional, he acted like he cared and he treated his students with respect.I wonder if his experiment with allowing the students to sit where they wanted to on the first day was accurate – I can’t be sure. I don’t have any recollection of kids behaving badly in that class. Maybe they sensed that he was a fair and respectful teacher which then, in turn, made them behave in a respectful manner as well.
