I was returning from working in Moscow to the United Kingdom with a transfer in Zurich in the early-mid 1990’s. The last leg was on a SwissAir flight from Zurich to Birmingham and the plane was only half full.As we taxied to the runway, the businessman in front of me turned on his portable CD player - I could hear the chink-chink-chink from the headphones. In those days plane navigation systems were very sensitive to interference from CD players and unsurprisingly a flight attendant was soon hurrying down the aisle looking for the offending CD player. He very politely asked the gentleman to switch off the CD player because of the interference. The genteman refused. The flight attendant hurried back to the cockpit but was clearly asked to try again! This time the flight attendant suggested that the gentleman switched the CD player off until the plane took off. The gentleman grudgingly agreed.We swung around onto the runway and accelerated. Within seconds of being airborne the gentleman turned on the CD player. The panicked flight attendant came hurrying down the (now very steep) aisle and virtually begged the man to switch off. The gentleman refused and the flight attendant returned to the cockpit.From the cockpit emerged a stern-faced man who walked down the (still steep) aisle whilst putting on his jacket. A couple of rows in front of us, he paused and put his cap on and straightened it.Walking up to the gentleman he stood straight and tall and very cooly said:“My name is Juergen Schmidt (or similar) and I am the captain of this aircraft. I am responsible for the safety of the aircraft and all personnel on board.In this capacity, I am commanding you to turn off the CD Player. If you refuse to comply with this order, I will have you restrained in your seat and I will radio ahead to ensure that the West Midlands Constabulary will be at the gate to arrest you.What would you like to do, Sir?”It was a masterclass that I will never forget and I smile every time I remember it.
