Why do some intelligent people lose all interest in academia?

The problem is that this dream of academia just doesn’t exist now, in any form.Without going into a long-winded explanation of how colleges have steadily eliminated tenure track positions in favor of what amounts to academic contract workers[2] , offloaded more and more professorial work onto graduate students (graduating far more than there will ever be positions for[3] ), historically skyrocketed the number of undergraduate students, failed to maintain commensurate pay of academics (but of course never failing to raise administration salaries and benefits to absurd levels[4] ), and 93% of colleges pay women less than men for the same position[5] ; it suffices to say that there are extraordinarily few tenure track positions[6] , in which these positions are competed for by a worldwide pool of applicants for what amounts to an insult of compensation.Now I know that most academics don’t expect to make boatloads of money doing research, otherwise they’d have gone into something else. But what about the research itself?Research itself has taken a turn for the worse in recent years. The famous replication crisis is still ongoing, and also exists within the more well perceived field of medicine[7] . Academic journals themselves are exploitative institutions[8] , they make money off of hosting work that others have done (including the reviewers who are not paid), then lock away scientific knowledge behind paywalls. Other journals are open source, but often lack decent vetting and can have serious quality control issues[9] .Well, let’s see. Even if my job puts me in poverty for an unstable position, and fewer than 50 people will ever see my research[10] (much less really read it), at least I’ll still be doing what I love?Probably not, I’m sad to say. Doing research is expensive. It costs you a lot in terms of time, cost of equipment, administering the tasks, and recruiting/managing the sample. Expenses have to be paid, so you’ll end up doing research on topics which people want to fund (and trends are looking bad [11] ). Often your job performance is heavily weighted to how much cash you bring in, with an afterthought to how you.. you know.. teach at a college. You generally have a choice of either competing for NSF/similar funds against the majority of others in your field (some of which have ethically shady relationships to the people who decide those awards[12] ), or you can do research sponsored by our armed forces to further military conquest and control. There’s other options of course such as going into business yourself researching ‘how to be happy’ and writing books about it, it is after all why we have a ‘Psychology’ section in bookstores.So at the end of the day.. you look at the idea of a college professor, a basic scientific researcher, and you’re left with a reality of a financially destitute, temporary, and expendable employment position. If you do somehow manage to get one, you will be financially obligated to research certain topics over others (regardless of their utility to our world), and all to create published articles that few to no one will ever read nor care to understand.People who are intelligent avoid academia because they can perceive it past the idea of what it should be, to seeing it how it is.
