Can an aircraft be pressurized during flight mid air? If no, or yes, then why?

Jet Airways flight 697 came that close to becoming another tragedy Helios Airways Flight 522 today. The pilots did an unforgiving mistake that could have costed the lives of 171 people on-board.A little background on the events; Jet Airways flight 697 was a scheduled flight from Mumbai to Jaipur, this morning at 5:55 AM. A few minutes into the flight, passengers began complaining of headaches and nosebleed. The oxygen masks dropped immediately and the aircraft did an emergency landing at Mumbai 40 minutes after it took off. 30 people were hospitalized with symptoms like blood from the ears. The cause, which I shall explain to you in this answer. The Boeing 737 pressurization system takes a part of air coming into the engines through a valve called bleed valve. When the engines aren’t running, the auxiliary power unit does the job of providing the bleed air on the ground. The bleed air is used both for air conditioning and pressurization. The picture above you can see the 737 cockpit is actually quite complex and with all due respect, a bit too clumsy. The events started with the push-back and engine start. The engine bleed is currently switched off. The APU bleed air is diverted to the engines to start it.The red marked areas are the bleed switches, with the engine bleeds on the edges and the APU bleed in the center. The yellow switches are for the packs or should I say cabin air supply. The packs are started again once the engine bleed is on.The morning flight schedule plays a disastrous role. Most probably the crew woke up at around 2:00– 3:00 AM in order to be in the airport on time to complete the paperwork and aircraft preparation. The engines are started and stabilized but ignorance took priority over duty. The crew most probably didn’t even go through the checklist! If they did, they just read it out on the voice recorder but never checked the items. The pressurization panel is directly above the First Officer and there are no chances he could miss the error unless he was really casual with his duties. The duct pressure meter rises if the engine bleed is on and drops a little once the packs are started but nothing happened and the First Officer didn’t seem to notice it either. The panel is not clearly visible to the Captain and also it is hard for him to determine if the switch was on. But as the Senior cockpit crew member, it was his responsibility to complete the checklist properly and guide the First Officer. There are at least 3 times when they get the chance to check the switches but they simply ignore them. Even the yoke has a quick checklist that asks the pilot to go through the configuration once again. The aircraft is soon airborne. Mumbai ATC initially clears them to 10,000 feet. They begin to climb. Amidst their ignorance, they didn’t notice that the cabin pressure was not stabilized at around 8000 feet. The warning lights indicated that the cabin was not pressurized. The pilots immediately wore their oxygen masks and realized their mistake. The aircraft turned back and made an emergency landing at Mumbai. You can check the flight log here- Flight Track Log ✈ JAI697 ✈ 20-Sep-2018 ✈ BOM / VABB - BOM / VABB ✈ FlightAwarerIn the past, I have mentioned several cases where Indian pilots ignored the checklists to make severe life-threatening errors. I strongly support DGCA’s decision to ground them and even banning them from flying again if needed. I understand the financial situation of Jet Airways isn’t boosting anyone’s morale but that is no excuse to risk multiple lives, let alone letting your guard down.Aircraft can be pressurized mid-air but with no effect. It will take several minutes and by that time the aircraft can actually do an emergency descend to a lower altitude. What really made the passengers sick was the inability to adapt. At an average climb rate of 1428 feet per minute, the aircraft flew from 46 feet ground level to 10,000 feet initial climb in 7 minutes. The sudden loss of pressure was the culprit here, if you consider some hill stations like Leh is almost at this height. The inability to adapt so quickly is also a reason why rapid mid-air pressurization was never given priority. The changes could lead to severe damage of the eardrums and even lungs. This incident is one the most severe incidents to occur in recent times in India skies due to pilot error. If the pilots would have not been able to reach their oxygen masks in time, they would have been incapacitated and the plane would have flown on autopilot till the fuel ran out, crashing the plane somewhere between Mumbai and Jaipur.Apart from human factors as a safety lapse, it also reveals the problems with the age-old cockpit design of the Boeing 737. The overhead panel is still almost the same as when the aircraft was introduced in 1967. The switches make it almost impossible to notice if they are on or not in a hurry.Let me introduce you to the new concept that came out after the 737, for example, the Boeing 747.Compare the panels, the second one is based on extinguishing lights, if the switch is on and requires no attention it will remain dark and if it does so, it will light up mostly in amber stating off or fault.737–800747–8

I'm moving out at the end of the month and the landlord is saying I have to do a "move out inspection". I have no interest in claiming any part of my deposit and I intend to forfeit it. Is there any reason I have to do this "move out inspection"?

The landlord is doing that for your mutual protection. That way, there can be no misunderstanding. If there is damage, it will come out of your deposit. If the damage is less than the amount of the deposit, you will get a refund. If it’s more than the amount of the deposit, you will owe money. Chances are almost non-existent that it will come out to the exact amount of the deposit. The deposit is not an insurance payment. It will go toward the damage, and is collected based on what’s considered reasonable for the amount of damage that a typical tenant might do. If you skip the inspection and the damage is greater than what you expected, then you might appear to be trying to leave without paying. If the landlord wanted to rip you off and keep your money, the best thing that the landlord could do is not have the inspection, and claim later that you did all sorts of damage. Since the landlord wants the inspection, it doesn’t sound as if the landlord is out to get you. When I have a tenant move in, I have a document that’s about five pages long with categories for each room. I have the tenant walk though with me, and in each room if there’s a problem in any category, it gets noted. I expect things to be in the same condition when the tenant leaves, except for those things that I would have repaired as part of standard maintenance. For those items, I’d frankly prefer getting a call when they first have problems rather than when the tenant moves out, and if it’s something that you have to pay for, you would have been better off paying for it a long time ago and living in an undamaged apartment than living in a damaged one and paying even more. The same checklist gets used on the way out, so a tenant can’t claim that it was already that way. I have a signature saying otherwise. Once a tenant leaves and we both sign that everything is in good condition, or establish exactly what needs to be fixed, we both have it in writing. You need to accept that the landlord is doing what’s best for you, and there’s no way you’d be better off skipping it.

What is your general experience in driving a zoom car?

First time I scratched the car's skirt and had to pay for it with my entire security deposit. The car was new and undamaged. Felt bad when I damaged it. Overall the experience was good and I didn't mind when the security deposit was not refunded.Second time was a bad experience. We were handed a Karnataka registered car in Chennai when there were cauvery related protests happening in TN. The car had a lot of scratches almost everywhere. I took handover of the car at around 11 PM at Chennai airport. It was not the brightest spot on earth at that moment. The zoom car personnel advised me to just fill the checklist and take handover. Sounded fishy and I clicked some pics of the car from a few angles. Apart from this, the car had a very hard clutch and it was painful to drive it in city. This hard clutch left my knee with numbness once when I was driving it in Madurai. It had around 65k on odo. It was a wonderful trip and we drove across TN. So after driving the car for 10 days and 1800 kms , we returned it to the zoom car personnel. The story starts now.He pointed his finger towards a scratch. I told him that it was already there when we took the car. It looked a bit rusted and old and I used those points to counter him. He looked satisfied. But, when he was dropping us to the airport he told us that he will discuss the damage with his team leader. I was still at the airport when I got a message that they have deducted 3000 for the scratch. My fuse went off as I had handled the car very carefully. I called their call center and told them about it. My journey to get back the money stated even before I left Chennai. It was a painful process of around 10 days with daily follow-ups after I got my money back. Remember I had the pics to prove my case. These are the points I learned with this experience.Never trust the zoom car personnel and the checklist that you fill before taking handover of the car. Take as much pics as you can as the pics are the only proof that will save you in case of any dispute. They will not have any records of the damages on their cars. They might be using the same damage to keep deposits of multiple unsuspecting customers. The customer care is pathetic. They are not ready to hear any word which is even 1% closer to profanity and will disconnect the call. There is no record of any complaint number. You will have to ask for it. Everytime you call the call center they will say someone will call you back within the next 24 hours. If you miss that golden call, you are doomed. You will have to call them back and ask for a call back again and again those dreaded word, please wait for a call that will come anytime during the next 24 hours. Also, a few days later, I realized that a pic can be uploaded on their app. After that, I didn't understand the logic of someone trying to call me to get details from their side. It was pretty black and white and I just es wanted them to take their decision, but, it seems their team of special detectives will have to call you and you must be available to pic up the call and explain the pic to them again. In zoom car's case words speak louder than picture. It took me around 7 days after I had uploaded the pics to finally get my money back. There are no written records i.e. proofs anywhere. The complaint number will be communicated to you verbally when you ask for it specifically. There are no mail id where you can send your complaint and keep that as a record. The checklist that you filled earlier is not available for you. Everything is to be done on the app and there is just no place in the app where you can see your case or at the least the photos that you have uploaded. Basically there is nothing in written. 100% lack of transparency. The charges are arbitrary. I also own a Ford figo. The service center charges 2000 for painting half of the front bumper. I know this because I had got my car’s bumper painted again after a minor scratch from the authorized service center. They deducted 3000 and didn’t provide any justification for this amount. So basically, they deduct arbitrary amount and you cannot argue about this with the call center guy.
