Diamagnetic materials, when exposed to a magnetic field, create a repulsive field in response. So, with some strong magnets, you can make bismuth levitate.Bismuth has an unusually low toxicity for a heavy metal. Its periodic chart neighbors, polonium, antimony, and lead are all quite toxic, but bismuth is relatively harmless. Because of this, bismuth is being investigated as an alternative to lead for some applications.Most people have consumed some bismuth in their lives. The traditional layout of the periodic table is something of an historical accident.It works, but there are arguably better presentations that more clearly display the patterns involved.
