What are some good examples of art therapy?

I work at an art centre for adults with developmental disabilities. Some people call it art therapy, but as an artist I would add that every kind of art is therapeutic.I start a new person to art with a pencil, some paper and an eraser. I would give them something to draw from, like as a reference, or have them draw from their imagination. I would suggest looking outside is helpful. Or the time of year, so if it’s near Christmas then something Christmasy. You can add colours after the drawing is done, using oil pastels, pencil crayons, good markers, water colour paints, or acrylic paints.)If the person isn’t able to draw anything that you can recognize then I would suggest doing something abstract. I would have them look through a book with good pictures, have them choose one that they like. Then I would pick similar colours of paint and tell them to paint. The end result isn’t going to look like that picture. But it is going to reflect how that person feels, what that person thinks about, and you can always see what kind of style that person has. Do they need a larger piece of paper? Not so many colours? A selective colour palette? (Red, orange and yellow vs blue, green, and purple. This avoids them mixing up colours and finding sickly brown, the easiest colour to paint with and the most pukey, trust me.)I think this is very important, I never draw on their paper. If what they ask needs me to draw to explain, then I do it on the paper that covers the tables, not on their paper. This makes them realize that what they are doing is just theirs. No one helped them to do their art.In the end your artist will be surprised at how well they did. All with minimal help from you. It is their artwork. You are just a facilitator. And if they made nothing at least they have an idea of what it is about so maybe, next time, they will have a better idea going into it.All in all we have had some great artists coming through our centre. We have been open 17 years and I have been with them for about 17. It is my dream job. I hope that I can keep adding to the Centre for many more years to come. Then, one day, at age 80 or so, I can be an artist and someone can teach me.

How differently is writing and reading processed in the brain?

I don’t really know but I do know this: when I had a left brain stroke they say that you can lose any of four things. Reading, writing, speaking, and understanding (sorta like hearing but it’s different.)I lost my ability to write and speak English, my mother tongue. I could still read at least at a high school/college level. And I’m pretty good at understanding, there is just some things that people say where I have to ask them to repeat themselves. Now my writing (I had my stroke 14 years ago) is still so shitty. It looks like a 98 year old wrote it. I’m better at typing, it encouraged me to keep learning how to write in English. I’m better but not perfect. When I first started I could not even type correctly, the letters I would push were not what I wanted. My speaking has improved because I basically had speech therapy every day for the last 14 years. (I went back to work). It is better, but not perfect, especially at night when I am tired. Gibberish rules then. And it is so weird when you can think of what you want to say, but it comes out like gibberish. So weird. You think they are connected but they are not. The brain! Oh the brain!
