Are there dog shelters in the Netherlands? How does lost and stray dogs management look there?

There are (to my knowledge) no specialised dog shelters, but the generic pet shelters do of course house dogs as well. As all dogs have to be registered by law, any wandering dog brought in is usually quickly reunited with their family (most people microchip their dogs and cats), after a health check of course. If after 2 weeks the owner still hasn’t been found, or if a dog is handed over, the dog is placed in the shelter ready for addoption. Obviously if the dog is sick, he gets treated first. Only if the dog can not be treated, or has severe behaviour issues making adoption impossible does it get put to sleeop.

Why do people that are not planning on showing or breeding a dog purchase pure breeds instead of a rescue?

Because there aren’t enough rescue dogs to go around in the US.Because even if there were more rescue dogs, chances are that their demographics would remain disproportionately large-breed, teenaged dogs with potential problems that need fairly experienced homes.Because dogs while all equally deserving of a loving home are not equal in their traits, needs or suitability for various jobs, including various pet homes.I am very pro rescue. But there are only about 2.5 million adoptable dogs entering US shelters and rescues every year while about 8 million people in the US are trying to get a dog. So should we only let about one in three people who want a dog have one? Or should we say it’s OK to sometimes go to a breeder? We also import more “rescue” dogs from abroad (note quotation marks, import rescue can be very problematic and at times has unwittingly supported overseas puppy mills and the stealing of pets in other countries for export) than we euthanize - probably at least twice as many. There aren’t enough rescue dogs to go around! The shelter demographics are also such that 50–70% of dogs in US shelters at a given time are going to be of “pit bull type.” The percentage is even higher in urban areas, and even in rural areas it is usually only a few large breed/type/mixes that predominate. For example, if I look at the tri-county shelter near where I grew up, they have a grand total of one dog right now that isn’t a Lab, Shepherd, or Pit type, and even that one is a large-breed hound mix.My sister’s family have been looking for literally years to adopt a dog from rescue. They don’t have excessive needs, but they do have needs: they have small children, not a very tall fence, and someone with mild allergies. In literally years of looking at every rescue within 100 miles they have not been able to find anything that is good with small children, won’t jump their fence, and has a ghost’s chance of not causing a member of the household to be miserable. The dogs that are Poodles or Bichons almost all have issues that make them unsafe for the kiddos or needing more training and work than they can commit to right now. They are experienced dog owners, but don’t have the time or money to do weekly classes or bring in a private trainer for any long period of time.Should they simply not be allowed to get a dog? Am I a bad person because I have suggested that it’s time to consider looking for a breeder of Bichon Frise, Havanese, or a similar breed? My sister’s situation is not very uncommon for a pet home. You also have to realize that a great number of people also still work their dogs. I know people who need their dogs to pull the sled for their trap line, retrieve ducks from icy rivers, be their service dog, herd their livestock, and a variety of other tasks. Most shelter dogs are pretty decent generic dogs that would make decent generic pets in suitable homes that were able to nip any emergent problems in the bud. I work in rescue, trust me, our dogs do almost all have potential problems if the new home doesn’t know what they are doing or has very high expectations and needs for a dog. There is a reason that people who need a working dog don’t just go to the local pound. Those dogs at the pound do need great, loving homes… but those people also need great working dogs and that isn’t a great match most of the time.Should we have fewer working dogs or just more mediocre ones? For all of those reasons, it is perfectly fine by me if you choose to get a purebred dog from a breeder instead of getting a dog from a shelter or rescue.I do ask that you do your homework and only work with ethical breeders who have some proof that they know and care about and consistently produce type and soundness and health and correct temperaments for the breed.
