PDF Editor FAQ

Is there a difference between the score used by a percussionist in a symphony orchestra, and the one used by the rest of the orchestra?

There’s lots of excellent information in the other answers, but there’s something that ought to be added.Because percussion notes are often sparse in the orchestral texture, the corresponding parts are particularly likely to contain “cued” notes — indications of what the other instruments are playing during the percussionists’ rests.Orchestral musicians are good at counting along with the orchestra when they’re not actually playing, but it’s easier and more secure to have guideposts, to match what they’re counting with what they’re hearing. Here’s the beginning of the percussion part for the 1812 Overture:Note how the first percussion entrance is the timpani note at letter A. The timpanist can follow the cello and flute cues to confirm that he/she is counting the rests correctly. The full part is here: Tchaikovsky-Op49.TimpPerc.pdf

Which of Beethoven's sonatas can a grade 6 learner start practicing?

I don’t know if there’s a definitive answer for this, but I can state that there are a number of lists of Beethoven sonatas ranked by difficulty online. They’re not always the same but they are broadly similar. It usually goes something like this:1. Op. 49 No. 22. Op. 49 No. 13. Op. 794. Op. 14 No. 15. Op. 14 No. 26. Op. 2 No. 17. Op. 10 No. 18. Op. 13 (Pathetique)9. Op. 10 No. 310. Op. 10 No. 211. Op. 2812. Op. 2 No. 313. Op. 2614. Op. 31 No. 315. Op. 2216. Op. 7 (Grand)17. Op. 27 No. 2 (Moonlight)18. Op. 27 No. 119. Op. 31 No.2 (Tempest)20. Op. 2 No. 221. Op. 5422. Op. 7823. Op. 9024. Op. 81a (Les Adieux)25. Op. 31 No. 126. Op. 53 (Waldstein)27. Op. 57 (Appassionata)28. Op. 10129. Op. 11130. Op. 11031. Op. 10932. Op. 106 (Hammerklavier)I am working towards grade 3 currently and I am learning Op 10 No 2 (Sonata #6 in F Major) which, I will readily admit is harder than the stuff I should be learning at my grade, but I really like it, so I’m doing it. It’s just going to take a while, especially as I’m also learning more grade appropriate pieces.Interestingly, I’ve seen some suggestion online that Op49 No 1 and Op49 No 2 are both roughly ABRSM grade 5/6 level, which feels wrong to me. I learned both and while it took about 3 months, it wasn’t particularly difficult. My advice would be to find one you like, maybe starting in the top third of the list, and practice that.
