Have you ever said something to someone you don't know, carrying a child outdoors without a coat on a very cold day?

I did not, however the Office Manager where I worked in North Dakota did; and took it one step further.Maxine is a no-nonsense-tell-it-like-it-is-life-of-hard-knocks kind of person. When I worked with her she was kind, and loyal and didn’t put up with anything. She was a person who had lived through stuff, but used the pain and suffering to get out of bed and beat the day, rather than wallow in self-pity. I really liked working with her and admired her take on life. That being said, life in North Dakota is hard. Weather can kill you, and unfortunately in the years when Maxine and I worked together, there were several deaths due to exposure.Williston, North Dakota from 2010 - 2015 was booming due to oil, and there not being any decent jobs in any other part of the country. Everyone wanted to get rich in the oil fields (jobs with no experience were paying 250,000$ a year). People from warmer weather, and oil rigs were flocking to the area. Fred and I found jobs together, without an interview for construction, and architecture within an hour of calling the offices. It was so hard to find people to work the menial jobs, Wal-Mart was paying $22.00 per hour (my step-daughter was working there for awhile). Unfortunately, there was insufficient housing for the population. Rent for our 2 bedroom 1 bath apartment was 2500$ per month. A 3 bedroom would run about $3500 per month.People just showed up, hoping to get a job and send money back to their families. No experience, or any idea of how to live in extreme climates. It drove Maxine nuts to see people out on the road without hat or mittens. When we hired survey crews to go out in the winter, they would say “you really want us to go out in this?! Its -10F?!”Those of us with cold weather experience would laugh. The Survey Equipment was guaranteed to work until -20F. Oil Companies needed staking and property lines taken in the winter so they could get their titles to the property to drill in the spring. Winter blizzards meant nothing to Oil Executives issuing orders from their tropical locations.Maxine had a box of winter mittens, face masks, and scarves that she kept in a box in her office. Most times you were lucky to find a match, but woe betide the individual who did not have mittens, hat and a scarf on when they left for the field. Most offices, I have since learned, supplied field gear for the survey crew. However, turn over was so high, and field equipment had a “Bakken” mark-up that we relied more on the mitten and hat box since finding stuff at the store was next to impossible. The office had a storefront on main street, the administrative staff had offices that looked out on the sidewalk. One day we came back in from the field to find Maxine fuming mad. In her office were what looked like four siblings without coats, hats, mittens or scarves; drinking hot chocolate from the kitchen and getting lectured on the dangers of exposure, a very tired looking woman in a frayed coat was sitting in the chair looking beat down. All the children were school aged but no more than 16 years old; one of the younger ones announced they were in Kindergarten that year. As Maxine (sternly, but not un-kindly) continued talking about exposure and its dangers, her adult daughter came in with a bunch of coats, boots and winter gear.“My grandchildren, are about your size, and they were going to donate these to the church. The coats have been washed and are yours to take. Put them on Right now!”The coats and boots were in good shape and she made sure that they had them on right, and showed the youngest how to put on mittens, and wrap the scarves around their chests to keep the cold from seeping in.I and another administrative assistant helped get the children wrapped up; consciously ignoring the tears on the mom’s face.“We just moved here,” the mom was saying. “We wanted to be together, and their dad said there was work for everyone.” She went on, “We didn’t know how cold, how awful it really was here. Thank you for your kindness! How much do I owe you?”“Well, you should have done a little research.” Maxine went on to say, “you don’t willy-nilly pull your family from place to place and not know where you are going.”“These things were of no use to us,” Maxine continued, “keep your money and put it where you need it most right now. However, if I ever see any of these children without coats, or hats, or Mittens, again, I will definitely be upset with you.”Seeing that I was no longer needed, I walked out of the office, and back to my desk. Maxine wouldn’t talk about what she had done, she took our thanks and praise for a little while and then told us, “enough was enough.” She didn’t want to hear about it anymore.I didn’t get to see Maxine much after I left that office. I have yet to meet anyone that holds a candle to her confident, and definite attitude about how things should be done. Maxine was/is a great person, has a generous heart, and a commanding presence that will never be duplicated.

Why is the movie Fargo called Fargo, when most of the film is set in Minneapolis and Brainerd, MN?

Evan,Actually Fargo is in North Dakota, USA. The only reference to Fargo is that’s the place the character, Jerry, went to meet and make the deal. I think they just liked the name. Sometimes the title of movies really have very little to do with the substance. Also Fargo is a reference to Wells Fargo & Company but has nothing to do in the movie. Actually Fargo a far better title than Brainerd.
