PDF Editor FAQ

Who should I work for, the USPS, UPS, or FedEx? Why?

ups; union job , cant fire u unless u lie or steal’ guaranteed yearly raises, paid vacation, sick days & holidays. stock & 401k options, free ins (covers entire family), 24 hours (pick ur own shift), hires family members, tuition reimbursment, retirement pkg( I gave em 20, cleared $83,000/yr, now they pay me $3400/month for life)no education or skills needed—just willing to give a good days work (teamster for life***) always hiring, rarely advertises.

Are you a member of a union and have you been on strike before?

Yes and yes.We were working for a small business which was acquired by a national business. We had verbal promises of many things: very large pay raise, uniforms, safety shoes, gloves, medical, dental, vision, 401k, and more, but after several months, nothing happened. Mind you, we were working for half the pay of workers just a half-hour’s drive away - in the same company. We went to the Teamsters, signed Intent Cards, and the Teamsters delivered them to the boss. The boss said he would not recognize the union. So we struck for a single day. With that, the NLRB instructed both sides that they would have an election in a week, and we did. We voted unanimously to join the union. The Teamsters than had to negotiate a contract. The company brought in lawyers, and they stonewalled and played games. So we struck. The company hired scabs. Every time the company delivered to a refinery nearby, we picketed out front. So the delivery truck was thrown out of the refinery. When the trucks delivered to any company, we picketed out front. It was a cold and wet winter, and my only transport was a motorcycle. We had no money for lunch, for drinks, for rent. It was dark, and the roads were slick, and very very cold. The strike lasted nine long and miserable weeks. Finally, with rent due in another week, we relented. The NLRB was present at the negotiations, and the company settled with the Teamsters within a week.We doubled our pay, we got our 401k, uniforms, safety shoes, gloves, medical, dental, and vision. And I worked there for seven years. By that point I had serious tendonitis, and had to do something else.

Why do 78% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck?

I love this question, and some of the answers. I especially love the ones where the answer shows obvious political bias. Here’s a quick answer and a story using 2 families. My father was a teamster, drove a truck (local not over the road), my mom was a waitress at night. We lived a VERY middle class life, maybe even lower middle class. We had 1 car in the house, which was normally bought used, one color TV, and our family of 5 lived in a 900 sq foot home with 2 bedrooms and 1 bath (we later converted the “den” into a 3rd bedroom). We rarely went on vacation, I remember 2 growing up, both were withing driving distance and we vacationed with friends to split the cost. My brothers and I played outside in the neighborhood with friends, rode bikes, played ball, etc. My father did all the work around the house, as we got older, our chores included the things my father always did himself… grass cutting, painting, shoveling snow, working on the car and we helped the neighbors and they helped us (one was a plumber, another did carpentry, and another a barber… I forget what others did, but we shoveled a LOT of snow and cut LOTS of grass when the furnace broke and I think I was on 12 roofs in the neighborhood as a teen helping reshingle the neighborhood). We never had “extra” but there was always “emergency money” my parents saved and they eventually retired. My brother is a teamster, and his wife a waitress, they have 2 kids. 2 cars, both cars are less than 3 years old, 3 TVs (his cable and internet bill is $250 a month) 4 iphones, a motorcycle and a small fishing boat. They go on vacations a couple times a year, my niece has gymnastics 2 nights a week, my nephew plays lacrosse 2 nights and his team travels every weekend (neither kid is great at their sports, I’d say average at best). They live in a 2200 sq 4 bedroom, 3 bath home. My brother has a landscaper cut his grass, a plow guy plow his driveway. They have a second mortgage on their home that they took out to replace windows and build a deck… that’s when he bought the boat too. They have over $50k in credit card bills, and has borrowed money to pay the mortgage from my other brother and I (neither of us have been paid back a penny), they have NO savings, he stopped contributing to his 401k 10 years ago when his daughter was born. he makes ok money (around $70k) and she takes home about $500–700 a week in cash tips. His “paycheck to paycheck” could be fixed in 6 months with good financial choices. Liquidate and simplify and he’d be saving money before ChristmasPriorities have changed over the last generation or 2, many families are consumed with keeping up with the Jones instead of what’s really important.Yes, there are people that struggle and live paycheck to paycheck for a multitude of reasons, low work skills, poor pay, medical necessities, etc etc. But a significant portion of that 78% is due to poor choices. Now because this is Quora and every answer has to have a political slant. When my brother bought his home in 2007, it was around $500k… everyone told him it was too much for him, but whatever. His property tax bill was around $4500. at the low point, his home’s value was around $300k and his property tax dropped to $4200ish. 10 years later his home is again worth around $500k, but his taxes are now $6500. and his healthcare costs have doubled since the “Affordable care act”
